I have been thinking a great deal about speed in sports as of late, and no I am not trying to start a new drugs in sports controversy. The fact of the matter is that I have always been fascinated by the impact of team and individual speed in sports. Urban Meyer has developed the Florida Gators to be the fastest team in the nation, and by doing so he has made the Gators the best and most intimidating team to match up against. Often times it is more daunting to face a team full of jackrabbits than it is to face a team full of grizzly bears. Speed can embarrass people like few other attributes can.

A couple recent events have also renewed my interest in this topic -- the major event being Rickey Henderson’s induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. For those of us who witnessed Rickey in his prime, we can speak first hand about the impact he had on every game he was a part of. He was a disruption like no other. Not only did he steal as many as 130 bases a season, but he messed with every pitcher’s head who was unfortunate enough to be matched up against him. Honestly, how could a pitcher possibly concentrate on the hitter in the batter’s box with Rickey on base?

Sports gamers are a difficult bunch to get along with -- I would know since I'm part of that bunch. We used to be happy with decent on-field action and a patched-together season mode.

Oh how things have changed.

Now it's almost fitting to compare modern sports gamers to fans of role-playing games. Ardent RPG fans demand nothing less than perfection. Woe is the developer that does not live up to the latest Final Fantasy. Woe is the developer who does not understand the subtle differences between a wood elf and a high elf. You get the idea.

Scoff if you will, but the fact of the matter is that aficionados of sports games are not much better. In fact, I would argue that we have become worse. We demand that our games be authentic, replayable, and somewhere further down this list, enjoyable. Sports games have turned us into monsters, highly educated and discerning monsters.

Sp let us take a look at what the modern sports game must include, as well as some of the culprits that have raised our expectations to these heights.

We are now less than one month away from the release of Electronic Arts’ NCAA Football 10. If you are one of the many fans of the series, you probably already know about the enhancements and additions to this year’s game. That being said, the TeamBuilder option looks nothing short of awesome and will surely suck away many hours of my life. There are times, though, when playing with real, established teams is called for. After all, if somebody is talking smack about your alma mater, you have to be able to let your play on the field do the talking. With that in mind, I thought I would take a look at 10 teams gamers should watch out for in NCAA Football 10.

So how does a "free to play" baseball game fit itself into the landscape of modern and glitzy gaming? Well, it fits in by not trying to be more than it has to be.

MLB Dugout Heroes is an online experience. When the game initially boots up, the player is prompted to create a user name and password. After doing that, I selected my hometown Blue Jays as my club of choice. I was very pleased to see every Major League Baseball team represented by their actual players. After the initial setup stages, I was asked if I would like to proceed to the tutorials. Never too proud to accept advice, I jumped right into the batting cage.
