Natural Motion CEO Torsten Reil recently tweeted a picture of a generic Seattle Seahawks player leaping over a nameless Arizona Cardinals defender in a stadium labeled with NFL Network, NFL Red Zone and NFL.com advertisements.

Reil clarified in a second tweet that the screenshot was from an iPhone version of Backbreaker, though no further details about the picture were revealed.

Could this mean that a NFL edition of Backbreaker: Vengeance is in the works for iPhone? Stay tuned to Operation Sports for more news on Natural Motion and the Backbreaker franchise as the story develops.

You can see a full version of the screenshot here.

Jayson Young celebrates Independence Day with a gushing review about Backbreaker Vengeance.

Quote:
Rushing in, you boldly take the ball. Defenders are everywhere, but somehow your body and this ball have to get around the wet mulch pile, over the wooden bench, through the foursquare area and finally into the clear. You turn around, taunt the panting defenders by holding the ball just out of their grasp, and then you flex your muscles just like Hulk Hogan.

Playing Backbreaker Vengeance's centerpiece mode, Tackle Alley, is like reliving a childhood game of recess.

Sports games progress like every other genre, and idea copying becomes a huge part of the development process. However, some ideas seem to get looked over by some development teams. Given the current state of the industry, what is the most important feature that has not yet made its way into most sports games?

Chris Sanner: The one thing all sports games need that none actually do involves dynamic player personalities.

Robert Kollars:
There are a lot of features that should be absolutely standard in all sports games, but a complete editor tops the list for me.

Caley Roark: For me, the missing thing that frustrates me most is TV-style presentation, at least for major sports games.

With video game baseball season underway, it's the perfect time to make this analogy What realistic hitting would be to baseball games, realistic line play would be to football games -- unplayable for 95 percent of gamers.

To put things in perspective, a hitter at the MLB level has less than .25 seconds to judge a pitch's speed, location and decide whether or not to swing.

How Hard is it to Hit a Baseball?

Hitting major league pitching is so difficult, that succeeding 30 percent of the time is considered successful enough to earn a multi-million dollar contract.

NFL quarterbacks have more time to make decisions than MLB hitters, but with so much more data to take in, a NFL quarterback’s job is arguably the toughest in pro sports.

Chase Becotte:
I'm trying to temper my enthusiasm until I see what happens with the effectiveness of just juicing your created player with power, but it's hard not to be really excited after playing this demo. Everything from a more lively crowd at the U.S. Open -- when I played the game at a preview event, the crowd seemed even more lively than the one found in the demo -- to the player grunts to the tweaked controls are all really working here.

Jayson Young: The crowds definitely sound great with the way they build up during rallies and yell between points, but outside of that, I don't see a whole lot of improvements over Top Spin 3.

Christian McLeod: At the recommendation of my OS staff brethren, I reluctantly downloaded the Top Spin 4 demo. To my surprise, I had a great time with the demo -- so much so that the game may enter my closely guarded sports gaming rotation in a few weeks. Graphically, the game is beautiful, and just as Chase mentioned, my jaw dropped during the first match I played on clay. At times I felt like I was actually controlling a televised tennis match, and the buttery smooth control scheme was pretty easy to pick up and start having success with in a matter of minutes.

Chris Sanner: A few weeks ago someone asked me on Twitter what I thought of the prospects for Top Spin 4. I said I think the game can't possibly be bad, but I'm not sure if it's going to be a can't miss all world title.

I think I was definitely right on that.

Pass Back

There are three stances from which you can attempt a pass back: upright, forehand or backhand.

A stick lift will beat the upright or forehand stance, and a tie up will beat a backhand pass back. But your average NHL player relies on the plain old "win back" most of the time.

If your faceoff rating is higher than the other center’s rating, you can counter with your own pass back from any stance and win the majority of draws. But if your faceoff ratings are equal, you will have to choose the appropriate counter based on your opponent’s stance.

In versus mode, it’s important to know the faceoff ratings for all your centers. Guys with a high rating can win faceoffs cleanly, but you may have to get dirty with the third- and fourth-line centers, using stick lifts and tie ups to steal draws.

"Big Thrills" is a big letdown.

Trials HD's second expansion pack fails to live up to its name, offering bland maps full of small, annoying jumps.

For 400 Microsoft Points, Big Thrills offers 40 race tracks spread across five difficulty levels. But instead of the big speed, huge jumps and dangerous falls that Trials fans have come to expect, the maps in Big Thrills are full of wood planks, waist-high crates and tire piles.

Gold: ESPN NFL 2K5

Releasing at only $20, ESPN NFL 2K5 will likely go down as the greatest sports gaming bargain of all time. Online players rejoiced over 32-team leagues -- complete with trades, injuries and free agency -- that hit both the PS2 and Xbox. Week-by-week player development and coach-specific team tendencies highlighted a deep offline Franchise mode. Chris Berman's halftime highlights and weekly wrap-up shows added the feel of a real-life Primetime telecast to the game as well. Like the NES classic Tecmo Super Bowl, ESPN NFL 2K5's fans still edit yearly roster updates, keeping the game relevant. Time passes on, but ESPN NFL 2K5 does not.

Silver: NCAA Football 2004

For its time, NCAA Football 2004 was a feature-packed game. 36 I-AA teams (still missing from today's NCAA games) complemented the 100-plus division I-A programs. Fans of Division II and Division III teams could build those schools with the create-a-school feature and use them in Dynasty mode. Sports Illustrated magazine covers and new pregame introductions added to the game's pageantry. But if there is one thing for which NCAA 2004 is remembered, it's the debut of online play for the Playstation 2. EA's shinier, PS3 football games -- arguably -- still cannot match the fun factor of the legendary 2004 edition.

Readers Choice: NFL 2K5

Because really? Who expected anything else? Not only did NFL 2K get nearly 90% of the votes, it do so while laughing at every other football game offering the past decade. This was the most one sided category for either the staff or the readers, so anyone thinking NFL 2K5's star might fade with time has been greatly mistaken.

The Madden series is one that originally helped to define the term "video game stats." So it should come as no surprise that Madden 11's short-lived shelf life is already being badgered by a near-unanimous questioning of "where's the defense?"

For football fans trying to reconcile themselves to another "offense-heavy" version of Madden, it feels like forever -- not six years ago -- when Ray Lewis first jumped off the cover of Madden NFL 2005, sprinted through the A gap and finally showed armchair quarterbacks what it was like to "Fear the D."

Line shifts, defensive hot routes and the brand-new "Hit Stick" were some of the key features that helped distance Madden NFL 2005 from the sideline-rollouts and 70-yard streak passes of Madden NFL 2004. After all, let's not forget that Madden 04 is most-remembered for the "god status" it ascribed to cover athlete Michael Vick and his unstoppable, scramble-based offense.

But while the marketing of Madden NFL 2005 heavily emphasized the game's new defensive features, it's the balanced gameplay for which Madden NFL 2005 has become fondly remembered -- a balance that, thus far, remains nonexistent in Madden NFL 2011.

There is an old saying that states that the game of football is "one-third offense, one-third defense and one-third special teams."

Yet, for as often as games of Madden are decided by a muffed punt here, a kick return there or a game-winning field goal in the closing seconds of regulation, it can sometimes feel like great plays on special teams are the deciding factor in a game between two closely rated teams.

With no tutorials to go through or depth charts to look over, Madden 10 makes it tough to sort out just who exactly is playing on your special teams, much less what it takes to make those players into great ones on your special teams unit.

In addition to providing complete depth charts for kickoffs and punt returns, this guide should help Madden coaches decide how to build a special teams unit that can make the big plays that often decide who wins or loses a close game of Madden.

Four years and one console cycle ago, EA’s NHL series was a total mess. As a product, it was getting outsold by its chief competitor, NHL 2K. As a brand, it had grown so stale and predictable that even the series’ die-hards were beginning to question their loyalty to what had become an inferior, outdated hockey franchise.

After taking off the '06 hockey season (at least on this generation of consoles) to re-evaluate its approach to the genre, innovations like the "skill stick" (NHL 07) and the EA Sports Hockey League (NHL 09) quickly transformed the NHL series from a tired has-been into one of sports gaming’s most-respected franchises.

But aside from the above-mentioned innovations, a key reason for NHL's rapid turnaround has been the outstanding post-release support from its developers.
