Madden 11 will be better than Madden 10, but by how much? Stuck
Posted on April 8, 2010 at 07:19 AM.
There are many who would argue that Madden 10 was not that much of a leap over Madden 09. To those people, I say: Shove it. Your animosity toward EA, Tiburon, or whoever else clearly has clouded your judgement. Madden 10 may not be everything we've ever wanted in a football game, but to say it wasn't a significant improvement is purposefully discounting facts.

But the question remains; will the leap from '09 to '10 be matched again this year. Unfortunately, I am forced to say probably not.

Disclaimer: No, I haven't played Madden 11. I may or may not know a fact or two more about M11 than the average OS user, but I haven't touched the game. I'm not THAT much of an insider

The fact is that locomotion may be one of the biggest changes in Madden history. We tend to think of it as simply momentum based motion, but as we're often told by the devs- you change one thing, you break 10 others. Last year's community day had better locomotion than the final product, but it broke so many other aspects of play it was scrapped before release.

An example... a free safety in deep middle coverage must close on the ball in the air. With momentum based locmotion in effect, but no AI to support it (ie. still using the same AI as before) he will over run the spot he needs to be at by quite a ways, leaving him beaten deep by a post route. Not pretty, very exploitable.

What this means is that in order to impliment locomotion, a significant overhaul of individual player logic had to be done. A bigger task, I expect, than implimenting the movement system alone.

I don't expect major upgrades on the level of Pro-Tak outside of locomotion. However, if done correctly, Locomotion could be that feature that takes Madden 11 to where we've been begging it to be.

Still, the leap will not be as great.

I hated 09. It was because of 09 that I found out about the greatness of NFL 2K5 and 2K8. You're right though, Madden 10 was a huge improvement from 09. Ian Cummings has done a good job since taking over the franchise. There are still some nagging problems in M10 but nothing as repetitive and embarrassing as M09.

Good read.

The new locomotion sounds very good, looking forward to seeing more on it. Wondering what else they have up their sleeve.

I think Locomotion is the BIGGEST upgrade I, or anyone, could have asked for. It's a huge leap in my opinion. Getting the most, seemingly, simplistic fundamentals/essentials of the game right, is more important than someone may want to admit.

I'm glad you're back at the Community day man.

Interesting read Adembroski, so you're implying that what we've seen in yesterday's blog might not mirror what we'll find in the final product?

I hardly played Madden 09, and 10, for me, was just ok. I still liked the feel of NFL 2k5 better, mostly because of the locomotion/momentum effect. I would be thrilled if Madden 11 could get that same effect.

While it actually sounds like the locomotion/animation engine will be the biggest improvement to the game overall just because of the fact that it was not nearly on par with what has been told and shown (I'm looking more to the NCAA 11 blog vid since it was more polished with the leans and organic running movements) recently, we still don't know what else is coming down the pipe. I know that Ian said last year that he wanted to include the new audio for crowds and stadiums and such but couldn't fit it in so I expect it to be included, this year, which can make a world of a difference, too. I think of how much NBA Live 10 draws me in with the arena/crowd sounds/noise.

It is interesting how you stated that locomotion was actually better at CD and how they had to tone it down for the final product of Madden 10. I didn't know that but I would think since they were going to originally include it in Madden 10 but realized how much more tuning, possiby including AI tuning, would be needed, it may be much more up to snuff, now, which I would think would be why they are finally going to implement it for this year. Who knows but that's actually a promising thought, in my mind, since now it doesn't sound like they just built this tech for this year's game so it shouldn't break as many things in the game, hopefully. I know they still have new things to add on top of last year's version so will all these things play nice together? We'll see.

Bottomline, this locomation/animation engine is a HUGE addition to the game and we KNOW there is more to be added on and/or fixed. I think that engine, alone, if done well, will make Madden 11 at least FEEL like a huge leap, I believe.

Aren't you down at community day right now? Weird timing of this post and saying you have not played it when you're down their today.

I am looking to see if EA expands on the presentation that they re-vamped in Madden 10. I think what we saw were building blocks and if they can take The Extra Point to the next level to include highlights and deeper statistical information, TEP could be the next big thing in sports gaming from a presentation stand point.

Hopefully, EA tightens up the audio as well.

All in all, I am looking forward to this year's Madden. Maybe we will get multiple presentations from ESPN and CBS....

Oh, shoot. It IS CD! Ian says you're a 2 yr vet down there, now, Adem. Can't wait to hear and possibly see some of the goodies from CD. GIVE IT TO US!

Locomotion could take the Madden series to a whole new level of realism.

I'm looking forward the future blogs and this game in general.

I don't expect any leaps. I expect things to be like they are in the NFL! While gameplay is the #1 focus. I expect Franchise mode to be improved. The halftime and post game shows to have more depth. Expanded rosters, fixed I.R., Practice Squads etc. etc.

These are the improvements I am looking for, the little things that make the game better.

I don't see there being a big leap from 10 to 11, either. 10 definitely took a lot of positive steps over the mediocre games from 07-09 on the 360/PS3.

Unless I'm really blown away by more information and the demo, I'll be passing on M11 and wait until M12, as I'm trying to go every-other-year with sports game purchases. I am getting NCAA 11, though, since I didn't buy 10.

Madden 11 will be better than M10. If you noticed Madden 10 was basically a vanilla relaunch of the Madden series. The gameplay was actually extremely solid and the presentation was much improved. I fully expect Madden to borrow plenty of online features from Super street fighter 4 to make for a better online experience. With that said, I fully expect loco motion, revamped player ratings, and a much improved pro-tak will more than command everyone's dollar. But I still stand firm on the notion that Ian and company are pointing their guns at Madden 2012 as this generations best football video game experience.

No, I'm only saying that, at that time, based on the information I had, that the overall leap forward from '10 to '11 would not be as great.

As Danimal said, when I wrote this, I was in Orlando awaiting the start of Community Day. I had not played the game. I have now. But with that comes the NDA and now it is very difficult for me to follow up on this blog. The blog was a bit hurried because I'd meant to write it for weeks, but I was sitting here hours away from my first experience with the game, and once I knew one way or the other, I couldn't write the blog:P

But I can say this blog, in no way, was a reflection of what I thought of the info that was out, only what I thought we were really going to see. Whether that held true, post community day, I can't say at this point. I'll add my take to certain aspects of the game as information comes out.
