Middle Tennessee State earns some respect with a 24-7 beating of #4 South Carolina

The Blue Raider came out swinging at home against #4 South Carolina, scoring 14 points in the first quarter while keeping USC out of the end zone. The rest of the game, both defenses managed to play a good game, but South Carolina already dug themselves into a hole with turnover. Before the end of the 1st half, after USC's 3rd turnover, MTSU was able to extend their lead with a FG to 17-0.

The Blue Raider did get some bad news in the first half, HB Jerome Wade left the game with a sore back. After the game they would find out that he was not seriously hurt, but would miss the rest of the game and should be back for MTSU's next game in 2 weeks.

South Carolina wasted no time in the 2nd half to get their first score. On the 2nd play of the 2nd half, 69 yard TD pass to Cantrell. 17-7. on the very next drive for MTSU, QB Lance Williams would keep the ball on an option and take it 50 yard for the TD for the final score of the game to lead 24-7. the rest of the game, neither team could move the ball much at all. South Carolina did manage a good drive in the 4th quarter, but failed on a 4th and goal.

MTSU would go on to win 24-7 and move on to 5-0(2-0), defeating the 2 of the biggest threats for the SEC East(UF and USC). It seems the East could be decided later in the year at Tennessee. MTSU have the next week off before traveling to Mississippi for the next 2 weeks against Ole Miss and Miss State.

The Blue Raiders prevail on a day when both offenses were off

Low scoring game at the Swamp between The Blue Raiders and the Gators. MTSU would get on the board mid-way through the first, when Lance Williams ran it in himself on a 11 yard run. Florida would answer back with a FG to make it to 7-3. On their next drive, MTSU would drive down the field, but would get stopped in the redzone and would be force to kick another FG, 10-3. Florida would put up a FG of their own with just under 3 minutes to go in the 1st half to close it to 10-6. The Blue Raider would try to add to the score, but would miss a FG to close out the half.

In the 2nd half, neither team could move the ball much, MTSU would fumble, UF threw and Int. The Blue Raiders would add a FG right at the end of the 3rd quarter to make it 13-6. Florida drove down the field on their next drive, but would fail on a 4th and goal from the 3 yardline. Florida would get another opportunity late in the 4th, but time would run out before they were able to score.

Middle Tennessee State celebrates their 42-16 home victory over rival North Texas

Blue Raiders were able to put away North Texas pretty easily. at one point leading 35-3. North Texas had a couple of big plays in the 4th which set up their 2 TDs, otherwise, MTSU's defense play a terrific game. MTSU's QB Lance Williams play a great game, throwing for 219 yards and rushing for another 57 and racking up a total of 4 TDs.

Williams would surpass the school record for career passing yards in this game. Williams now has 8,131 passing yards, and his current 77 TDs also is a school career record. Williams also has 1,983 career rushing yards and 27 career rushing TDs. He has started every game since stepping on campus and has been a big reason why MTSU has been so great over the last 4 seasons.

In the top 25, #1 Oklahoma lost to #17 Penn State and would drop to 9th. #2 Michigan would also drop to 8th, losing to #8 Notre Dame. #15 Maryland would drop out of the top 25 after losing to unranked Washington. #25 Utah would drop out after losing to unranked Air Force. Miami would become the new #1 team, followed by LSU, MTSU, Notre Dame, and Clemson.

Middle Tennessee State opens the year with a convincing 27-3 victory over Louisville

The Blue Raiders open their 2020 season in Louisville. On the first drive of the game MTSU QB Lance Williams overthrows a WR Tyler Nelson and Louisville picks it off. That would be the only turnover for the game, for either team.

After stopping the Louisville offense and forcing a punt, MTSU strikes quickly with a 1 play drive, a 55 yard pass from Lance Williams to Tyler Nelson. Louisville was able to get into FG range on the next drive and closed it to 7-3. Early in the 2nd quarter, Jarrett Denman was able to punch it in from 2 yards out to extend the lead with a 14-3 score. MTSU would score again in the 2nd right before the half, with a 12 pass from Lance Williams to Brandon Banks. 21-3 lead at the half.

Both teams' defenses played great in the 2nd half. MTSU completely shutout Louisville in the 2nd half, and MTSU was only able to get 2 FGs in the 2nd half. The Blue Raiders were able to cruise to their first victory of the season. Georgia Tech was the only top 25 team to lose in week 1, and they would drop out of the top 25 which bumps Utah up to 25th after their win against Rival Utah State.

The Blue Raiders will take on an old Sunbelt Rival of North Texas next week.

MTSU's 2020 schedule(with preseason rankings):

9/5 - North Texas (old Sunbelt rivalry)
9/12 - #23 Boise State
9/19 - at #7 Florida
10/3 - #9 South Carolina
10/17 - at Ole Miss
10/22 - at Mississippi State
10/31 - Auburn
11/7 - Vanderbilt
11/14 - Georgia
11/21 - at Tennessee
11/28 - #2 Michigan

This will be the first season for the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders in the SEC conference. the "experts" are picking MTSU to win the SEC East over Florida, but 2nd overall behind LSU. This would be the Season for the Blue Raider to win it all as most of their starters return for this season. However, 2 of their 3 rushing trio that were ranked #1 in rushing last season have moved on. 4 year starter at QB Lance Williams is an early favorite for the 2020 Heisman Trophy and hopes to make history for the Blue Raiders. Williams already owns the School record for career TD passes(73), so every TD thrown will add to it. He is also just under 400 yards away from breaking the school record for career passing yards.

This is the best team MTSU has ever had in their history, some say they have the most balanced talent in the nation. Defensively, MTSU will be switching to the 3-4 defense. MTSU has a lot of great LBs and switching to the 3-4 will make the most use of them.

Middle Tennessee State narrowly defeats Southern Miss on the way to their 6th straight C-USA Title

The Blue Raiders would have to fight to win their 6th straight C-USA Title against Southern Miss. USM would get the early advantage after a fumble by MTSU's QB Lance Williams. it would eventually lead to a USM TD as they take the 7-0 lead. MTSU would finally get on the board with a FG late in the 1st to close it to 7-3.

MTSU would add on 7 more points with a 12 yard strike from Lance Williams to Brandon Banks, 10-7 lead for MTSU. before the end of the half, USM would answer back with a TD of their own to retake the lead 14-10 at the half.

The 3rd quarter was a defensive battle, with MTSU being the only one to score any points with a 24 yard FG to close it to 14-13. early into the 4th, MTSU would punch it in from 1 yard, but would fail on the 2-pt conversion. The Blue Raiders would still lead 19-14. after forcing USM to punt, MTSU would run the clock down and add a FG to their lead, which was now 22-14.

USM would drive down the field and score on a 4th and goal to close it to 22-20, with a chance to tie the game on a 2-pt conversion. the 2-pt try would end up 1 yard short and MTSU would maintain the 22-20 lead.

Miami out plays the Blue Raiders in Miami. The Blue Raiders just couldn't keep up with the Hurricanes throughout the game. Miami had several bug plays that lead to points, while the MTSU offense had to work it's way down the field. Miami would score first on a 20 yard strike to Mathis from West. MTSU would answer back on a 4 yard run by Rogers.

The Blue Raiders would close the gap on their first possession in the 2nd half with a 47 yard FG. Miami still lead 17-16 and would extend that lead after a 14 yard run by Herman. 24-16.

The Blue Raiders would fight back to take the lead after a long TD drive capped off with a 1 yard run by Rogers and then Dallas Fowler's 4th FG of the game. 25-24 lead for the Blue Raiders. Maimi would answer right back quickly on a 59 yard TD pass to Allen once again. 30-25. The Blue Raiders had 4 chances in the redzone to take the lead, but would come up short.

Undefeated Blue Raiders defend their home turf against Tulsa

The Blue Raider brought their 2nd ranked rush offense in the game against Tulsa. Tulsa played tough in the first quarter however, shutting out MTSU in the first quarter, while Tulsa scoring a FG to lead 3-0 after the 1st.

The Blue Raiders offense exploded in the 2nd quarter, scoring 24 points with 2 TD by HB Jonathan Smith, with the third TD being a pass from Lance Williams to Steven Triplett. Tulsa added a TD of their own but MTSU would lead 24-10 at the half.

The Blue Raiders would mostly use their run game in the 2nd half, and it would pay off as the T.O.P. would keep the Golden Hurricanes off the field. MTSU would score a TD in the 3rd to take a 31-10 lead into the final quarter. Tulsa would try to start a comeback by scoring a TD with 4:44 left to trim the lead down to a 31-17, but MTSU would run down most the clock and then put up the final TD of the game to win 38-17.

MTSU moves on to 11-0(8-0), and will face the 14th ranked 7-3 Miami Hurricanes in Miami Gardens, FL. looks to be a great match-up with Miami having a top 10 ranked defense. the BCS would shake up some, as Utah ended up losing to BYU 29-28. Michigan is now ranked #3 with LSU and Florida in 4th and 5th. Oklahoma is still ranked 1st with MTSU 2nd, OU and MTSU are the only undefeated teams left and 8 teams have 1 loss.

Middle Tennessee State remains undefeated after a visit to University Park

Penn State has been on a downward spiral the last 3 weeks, losing to Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin, all of who are currently ranked in the top 25. They had to host the #3 team of Middle Tennessee State. The game was dominated by the Blue Raiders on both sides of the ball, even with the Blue Raiders having trouble with turnovers.

Penn State would strike first with a 1 yard run by HB Aaron Denman. The Blue Raiders would answer back on a 20 yard pass from Lance Williams to Steven Triplett. After throwing an Int, MTSU would eventually rebound from that with a 9 yard TD run by Jonathan Smith to take a 14-7 lead into the half.

The Blue Raiders would control the 2nd half with a great rushing attack followed by a great defense. MTSU would add another TD early in the 3rd with a 30 yard TD pass to Kevin Weldon from Lance Williams. MTSU would not look back from that and would go on to win with a score of 21-7.

The #1 team Florida Gators, ended up losing at #12 South Carolina, and would fall down to 7th. Oklahoma becomes the #1 team in the BCS with MTSU right behind with Utah in 3rd. These 3 teams are now the only undefeated teams left. Utah ends the season with 3 tough opponents, ECU, TCU, and BYU. all hanging around the top 25 with TCU currently ranked at 14th. OU has the easier road, but will still have to win the Big 12 first.

The Blue Raiders move to 10-0(7-0) and will face the 4-5(3-4) Tulsa next week, then ending the regular season at #17 Miami. On the MTSU recruiting front, their class is pretty much set, only having to replace 10 seniors, 9 players have already committed, leaving the Blue Raiders only looking for another DE to finish the class.
