I love it when I can catch a corporation in double talk. Check out what John Riccitiello said about Madden and it's disappointing sales back in September:

“It is discouraging that one of our highest-rated and best-marketed ‘Madden’ titles in years is facing strong headwinds,” Chief Executive Officer John Riccitiello told employees in an e-mail released today. Industry trends “present a challenge,” he said.

Yet, just yesterday, EA touted 'record setting' sales of FIFA ... Read More

Natural Motion either has one of the greatest playing football games in the history of the world or it is about to heavily disappoint football fans around the world.

Without a franchise mode, at least in name, Backbreaker is going to have to rely on it's gameplay to pull in sales, and even still sales might just be tough to come by.

However, I see glimmers of hope here. If the game is able to deliver full customization options on a level not yet seen before so players ... Read More

It's Thanksgiving day and while I wrote this full article quite awhile ago, I feel it's a good day to publish it with news being slow otherwise. I covered my frustrations with reviews in an earlier blog post as well, so if you want a refresher check out my earlier blog here.

The most frustrating aspect of reviews for me is scoring the game. The thing is, there are just as many theories on how to properly score a game as there are theories on how not to score games. At OS, we encourage ... Read More

It's Thanksgiving time, and as a sports gamer and looking back on this year of big releases there are a few things which we can be thankful for. Here are three:

1. There were no downright terrible major releases - Remember when Madden and NBA Live 06 stunk up store shelves? This year, the only possible candidate for suckitude comes from NCAA Basketball 10, but a lot of people kind of like the game. Every other release was pretty solid.

2. Developers haven't ran for ... Read More

Electronic Arts announced earnings for the quarter today which beat analysts estimates. The company also announced 1,500 jobs will be cut as part of a continued restructuring effort. This batch of news, as well as news of the acquisition of Playfish sent EA Shares over 2.5% higher.

The big news out of this report seems to be the layoffs, which cover about 16% of the company's employees and it could effect any number of positions, but mainly in the research and development realm. This ... Read More

This year's Game of the Year is going to be quite possibly one of the better races in recent memory. Depending on who you ask and when, you are likely to get responses which range anywhere on the release calendar spectrum from MLB '09: the Show to Forza Motorsport 3. Who are the top contenders?

Taking into account how both OSers and the OS Staff will vote, as well as a number of other factors, these games are the one's I could see winning game of the year next month:

Have you guys seriously saw the massive amount of good to great Racing games released this year?

There are at least three potential game of the year type of games in the racing genre alone: Forza Motorsport 3, Need for Speed Shift, and Dirt 2.

Not only that, but the sheer depth of the genre is staggering, folks who are addicted to Trials HD and Outrun Online Arcade will attest to the depth in even the download only offerings.

Race Pro is an overlooked ... Read More

We finally added a category for iPhone Apps here at OS and will start reviewing them starting this week. Cell phone sports gaming has officially hit the prime time (at least here at OS).

Is it any surprise? There are a ton of customers out there willing to shell out some good money for quality apps. With the iPhone hardware being capable of handling pseudo PSOne level graphics (at least from the naked eye), I've got some high hopes for the future.

One sign of things to ... Read More

In the spirit of Halloween, as well as for a way for me to praise the guys who make the games, I want to present three trends in sports gaming which I consider so good that they can only be considered scary good.

Interacting with the consumer base is the new cool. A lot of people seem to not remember when getting a developer to come onto any site to discuss their game was a lot like getting a five star general to divulge secret battle plans. Nowadays, it's weird when a game isn't ... Read More

This week, I have written about several different items which I believe should be universal in all dynasty and franchise modes. Today, I'm not going to hit on any new features per-se, but rather I want to tie it all together with one caveat: it all should be optional.

Gaming companies have a nasty tendency to force feed users with features. I say that is a practice which has to really stop. While the features I have described would add absolutely tons of depth, there are a lot of ... Read More

Ask any coach about the most challenging part of their job and many will answer with a simple phrase: pleasing the media and the fans.

Sure, gameplanning and trying to outduel opponents on the field is tough, but even tougher is answering to the media and your fans when you do lose. On that token, why don't you have to deal with what could be the toughest part of your job in games?

Like any of the other options I have raised in the past few days, this could and should ... Read More

Dynasty and franchise modes are simply my favorite part of sports gaming. While others play online, I simply try to guide my own team to glory against AI opponents almost exclusively. With that said, there are a few things I feel should be standard in these modes. On day one, we discussed how games needed to be more personal and yesterday we discussed the offseason.

Today I want to talk about something done in several different ways, but never to the point it should be: player personalities ... Read More

Yesterday, we looked at making Dynasty/Franchise modes a bit more personal. Today, we are going to look at something near and dear to my heart: the offseason.

Sports game dynasty modes simply go from the season to the offseason, which consists of a linear set of events which seem just as static as they are often boring. In pro sports, you draft. In college, you recruit. You can go for free agency, or if you are unlucky enough to be playing a college game, you can set your depth chart ... Read More

I'm a single player dynasty/franchise/association guy mainly. And while I really enjoy many of the multiple season career modes out there, I really would like them all to start doing five very specific things which would improve each mode no matter what sport it was covering.

While some games are doing these things, others aren't. Today's discussion is centered around one key thought: make these modes more personal.

Almost every mode is absolutely terrible at making ... Read More

If any of you guys remember, back in January I made a blog post listing my predictions for 2009 in Sports Gaming. I figured we'd go back and check on my progress to see how good...or bad I've done.
  1. Either MLB '09: The Show, NBA 2K10 or NHL 10 will be huge disappointments this next year. The solid trio we could count on will be no more after this year. It depends what you mean by disappointment, but in all reality all three games were very solid once again. I'm batting .000 right now after
