The Five Needed Fixes for Madden NFL 25's First Patch Stuck
Posted on August 22, 2013 at 11:20 AM.

I hate writing this blog because I know some will take it the wrong way.

"The game isn't even out yet and you are already talking about a patch?!"

I think this year's Madden is a few fixes away from true greatness on the field. As it stands from what I've played and saw, Madden NFL 25 is overpowered towards the offenses. The passing game is ridiculously automatic and the running game is automatic yardage if you just follow your blocks most of the time.

Luckily, these are all very correctable very fast.

Here are five very easy fixes which will put this year's game over all of it's predecessors:

1)Tune DOWN QB Accuracy: If you know anything about reading defenses and anticipating coverages you should have no excuse to complete less than 85% of your passes. Last time I checked, that's not a realistic NFL stat. This should be an easy fix.

2)Tune UP the DL's ability to break blocks: The line play, blocking assignments, etc. have taken a big leap forward this year. I've never played an EA football game with line play that feels as good as this year's game. However, the offensive lines are 'too' good. Defensive ends, especially All-Pros, should be getting more pressure on the QB. Defensive tackles, especially the dominant ones, should be demanding double teams.

3)Zone Coverages Need to Be Tighter: Another small but very sorely needed fix. Guys tend to sit in the middle of the zones and not attack receivers entering them. This is a huge reason for such high completion percentages.

4)Man Coverages...Also Need to Be Tighter: Maybe I'm cheating and this should be 3A. However, receivers get way too much separation in man coverage in the open field. The ONLY hope for a defender in man coverage is to play bump and run and to hope the receiver is knocked off his route long enough for the QB not to go to them. Seriously, if the receivers get going in the open field there's no hope. A little tighter man coverage mixed with less accuracy from QBs would fix this instantly.

5)RBs need to be tuned DOWN. The next time I see Frank Gore, all 5'9" of him, truck NFL linebackers I'm going to scream. Gore is a great RB and has a lot of power, but he should never in a million years be trucking NFL LBers consistently. A simple tweak down of RB ability on day one would balance the running game, especially past the first level where it tends to be a crapshoot.

What fixes do you think should be included in the first title updates?

Straight on blocking (on plays like the HB Dive) is too overpowered. You gain at least 3 yards each time you call a dive because the line never gets pushed back, they always go forward. All other running plays are blocked nicely, but the dive/sprint plays have too many holes and not enough resistance.

Agreed with ALL of the above. I'm on the fence with this years current gen because of the above mentioned items. Getting a lot of fun out of the NCAA which is the same game IMO.

I agree about the straight on plays as well. The line does get that forward push with no resistance. Should be variable each and every play. Defensive linemen are taught to control the line and hold up blockers and try to plug holes. Those that are dominant make a lot of tackles, those that are good at least result in LBers making tackles. In EA Football this year all DL get pushed backwards which is the exact thing you don't want to have happen down there.

if you're basing this on the demo, you need to remember that it is just a demo. comment about what fixes the game needs once you've played the final release.

that said, most of the problems from madden 13 were still there in madden 25's demo. i am not interested unless the final release is much improved.

agree with all of this. luckily a few of these can be fixed with sliders. mostly the penalty sliders

Make ratings matter....E.G. 1st team offenses should not struggle versus 3rd team defenses and vice versa.

I know this is an implausable and not contructive suggestion, just putting it out there.

Madden 25 is plagued with the exact same issues as NCAA 14. NCAA 14 has received two patches and the issues have not been addressed in that game. I would be very shocked if Madden received any substantial patch at all given next gen proximity and put the likely hood of them fixing issues in Madden that they haven't touched in NCAA at near zero. If you buy Madden current gen I would go in with them understanding that it needs a significant amount of slider work to be remotely non arcade football.

Ummmm....disappearing players anyone?

Man this is just sad. Talking about a patch for a game that isn't even out yet. EA should be ashamed.

Nice article Chris!
Something I think that should be noted that would help the coverage out is the defensive line pressure on the QB. If a qb has all day in the pocket in real life , it is nearly impossible for a CB to stick with a WR that long. If a corner has to cover a wideout for more than 5 seconds , its going to get tough at that point. Wonder if adjusting the pressure would help out the DB's.

These little tweaks if done correctly would make the game a lot more enjoyable though. Sliders help , but it needs a little bit of work under the hood.

All of these can be fixed with the appropriate slider settings

Fix the injury bug and the camera and I'm good

Can't all of those be tuned in the gameplay sliders.

Zone defense might still need to be adjusted even with slider changes.

Aren't we jumping the gun a little bit? I mean the game is not even out yet and we are discussing what needs to be fixed. Maybe some of these things won't be an issue when the game comes out.

Sounds like what you are saying is that EA needs to pay attention to the defense and give the game some semblance of balance. Sadly, I don't think that day will ever arrives as its more "fun" to have 38-35 games that it is 17-14 games.
