The Five Needed Fixes for Madden NFL 25's First Patch Stuck
Posted on August 22, 2013 at 11:20 AM.

I hate writing this blog because I know some will take it the wrong way.

"The game isn't even out yet and you are already talking about a patch?!"

I think this year's Madden is a few fixes away from true greatness on the field. As it stands from what I've played and saw, Madden NFL 25 is overpowered towards the offenses. The passing game is ridiculously automatic and the running game is automatic yardage if you just follow your blocks most of the time.

Luckily, these are all very correctable very fast.

Here are five very easy fixes which will put this year's game over all of it's predecessors:

1)Tune DOWN QB Accuracy: If you know anything about reading defenses and anticipating coverages you should have no excuse to complete less than 85% of your passes. Last time I checked, that's not a realistic NFL stat. This should be an easy fix.

2)Tune UP the DL's ability to break blocks: The line play, blocking assignments, etc. have taken a big leap forward this year. I've never played an EA football game with line play that feels as good as this year's game. However, the offensive lines are 'too' good. Defensive ends, especially All-Pros, should be getting more pressure on the QB. Defensive tackles, especially the dominant ones, should be demanding double teams.

3)Zone Coverages Need to Be Tighter: Another small but very sorely needed fix. Guys tend to sit in the middle of the zones and not attack receivers entering them. This is a huge reason for such high completion percentages.

4)Man Coverages...Also Need to Be Tighter: Maybe I'm cheating and this should be 3A. However, receivers get way too much separation in man coverage in the open field. The ONLY hope for a defender in man coverage is to play bump and run and to hope the receiver is knocked off his route long enough for the QB not to go to them. Seriously, if the receivers get going in the open field there's no hope. A little tighter man coverage mixed with less accuracy from QBs would fix this instantly.

5)RBs need to be tuned DOWN. The next time I see Frank Gore, all 5'9" of him, truck NFL linebackers I'm going to scream. Gore is a great RB and has a lot of power, but he should never in a million years be trucking NFL LBers consistently. A simple tweak down of RB ability on day one would balance the running game, especially past the first level where it tends to be a crapshoot.

What fixes do you think should be included in the first title updates?

All of these tweaks could definitely make madden a much more appealing day 1 product.

No objections here.

I will articulate on how the db/wr interactions could be balanced. Instead of coverage being boosted in recovery ability by the defense - I will advocae that the route running ability of receivers could be toned down so that not every receiver releases out of their routes with almost the exact same science of timing. If the elite receivers create elite separation - fine and the average to poor route runners take more time to and/or make their route exits more obvious and thus allow coverage defenders more time to break - fine.

The fix in the holes in coverage does not necessarily need to be remedied through the defense directly: the fix could come from the offense side by better animating the differences in route running ability so that not every tier of receivers run their routes their routes in the same fashion - in fact, not every receiver in the league can run every route in the route tree effectively and thus some are limited to vertical routes or red zone situations as well as known as possession receivers - this needs to be better expressed in an effort to give life to the existing traits.

Reading my above comment, I can see how the online users who lack strong route running receivers would suffer and thus I am reminded that the online mode must please all company.

Totally agree on QB accuracy and run blocking (user not cpu). Coverage by the cpu could be tightened up a bit as well.

Agree with all of them!

I agree 1000% with this list. Especially #1 and #4. Even with qb accuracy slider at 0 I can throw 25-29. Man coverage is horrible. At this point until its fixed or if it ever does get fixed I can't buy this game. It's a game killer for me! There is no way I complete 15 passes against Richard Sherman in 1 game with 1 route the curl. I complete it 9/10x and the one I don't its a dropped pass. Extremely frustrating.

With all that being said after passing on madden 13 for the 1st time ever since the 1st madden I was excited because this game is so close to being great IMO. Of course there are things moving forward I'd like to see but just tweaking the areas you listed would make this game a for sure purchase for me!

Fingers crossed! Good write up!

Majority of the biggest problems that still looms NCAA 14 has made it's way over to Madden that's not a good sign at all

Reintroducing the Vision Cone would help separate the best from worst qbs. It would have to be "optional" though as we are aware that it was not the most popular feature put into the game in 06. I think I am gonna be happy with game. I dont plan on buying a next gen till spring and I have never been very high on any first release EA titles with Sports Games

Vannwolfhawk hit it on the head for me. Of all the problems, it's that stupid curl route that frustrates me the most. EVERY time they play Cover 3, or back off my receiver for any reason pre-snap, I hot route that WR to a curl and it's money in the bank. I realize I don't HAVE to take advantage of this glitch, but just knowing it's there puts me in a place I don't want to be, having to police myself to make the game competitive.

This game is probably the best Madden ever, but when a developer blatantly ignores crucial issues for several years running, it makes me feel like a sucker to give them my money, regardless how much I love football and football video games. Time for my wallet to take a stand.

Nice read hopefully, this is reviewed and they have something in the works

I saw some ugly freezing moments and the replay angles are awful. Too many times the camera is zoomed in so close you see nothing.

I agree with the list above.

Overall, I have enjoyed the game. The tackles are awesome. Saw some sweet ankle tackles. There are times where the visuals take a hit like between plays and the camera is pulled back. Then there are times the game looks real.

Waiting on the next gen version to buy.

Remember, Madden is now taking a backseat on PS3 and 360 to NEXT GEN....it will be like when Madden on PS2 just got roster updates basically after the new gen systems came out....Madden is almost officially dead on PS3 and 360 .... sad to say...
