Explosive Speech from Gregg Williams...Should he Coach Again? Stuck
Posted on April 5, 2012 at 12:31 PM.

Oops.

Gregg Williams, former Saints Defensive Coordinator and one of the center pieces of 'Bounty-Gate', can't be feeling the greatest this morning, after an explosive speech taped by a documentary filmmaker was released to ESPN.

Here are some direct quotes taken from the above article from the tape:

“Kill the head and the body will die. We’ve got to do everything in the world to make sure we kill Frank Gore’s head. We want him running sideways. We want his head sideways.’’

“We need to find out in the first two series of the game … that little wide receiver, No. 10 (
Kyle Williams), about his concussion. We need to (expeletive) put a lick on him right now.

“(Receiver
Michael Crabtree) becomes human when we take out that outside ACL.’’

On the surface, I wouldn't think too much about it. But given the outside circumstances, we know these comments aren't just a coach trying to fire up his players.

Problem is, when you name players and specific injuries...well you cross a line. I personally think football is on a one-way path to becoming a sport that is a former shell of itself...a violent game cannot be made completely safe without losing the essence of what it once was.

But players being paid to injure their peers? Sometimes you can go too far. While I personally believe Coach Williams should get another chance at some point well down the line -- I think it's best he doesn't show up anywhere for awhile at any level.

What do you all think? What should Gregg Williams' punishment be? Should he get the chance to coach again?

Get him out.... The NFL already has distance themselves from him. I think there will be more to come out of this, such as a huge law suit claiming he purposely injured and ended someones career. The NFL and football is a dangerous enough sport when it is played regularly/legally but when your sending players to injure players is not right. The Saints is the new MOB with Greg Williams as the new MOB BOSS... Ban him for life and move on.

He should NEVER be allowed to coach again. Football is violent sport as it is, but when someone like this is out telling players to hurt other players, no there's place for someone like this in the NFL or any sport.

This is common practice among coaches in the NFL. He should be able to coach again next year. Gregg Williams just happens to have gotten busted. I'm not saying it is right, only that it is more common than most think.

Damn... he's just diggin' his own grave, isn't he?

Yes Williams needs to find a new line of work. Maybe a professional wrestler or MMA fighter since he love to hurt people so much. Does he have any type of mental problems that society might need to have concerns about. I hope he does not own a firearm or anything that might hurt someone in the future. I will tell you one thing. If this happened in High School or Pee Wee football. Then Williams will be arrested for his actions because they are criminal.

lifetime ban.

Different sport but regardless. Pete Rose gets a lifetime ban for betting on baseball, he did not ever bet on a Reds game, but the guy gets the book thrown at him.

This guy should go to jail in my opinion. If a player suffers a concussion on a hit on an average play its the nature of the game, if I tell a guy go out and take this guy out of the game with a headshot that is more than intent to injure.

this ranks up there with tanya harding only difference is this was meant to be a dirty hit within the game where as that was outside of the event. But the premise is the same take them out with an illegal activity to gain a competitive edge.

Everyone saying nothing is wrong with this cause were "soft" is just trying to hard to be "hard"

I think some of what he was saying is being taken out of context. I don't think he was literally saying to hit Frank Gore in the head; he's saying that Gore is the key to the offense and for the Saints to be successful, they've got to take that away. Same thing with Alex Smith. Yes, he may have pointed to his chin at one point, but I think he's referring to the fact that they needed to get pressure on Smith and get some hits on him.

The stuff about the ACL and concussion, though, were definitely over the line.

Definitely a lifetime ban here. This guy is a complete nobody anyway. Perfect opportunity to make an example out of someone that nobody will ever miss or care about.

I would also like to see him tackled by Patrick Willis on his way out the door, if possible.

Also, regarding the head comments, read all the quotes. He was telling guys to repeatedly hit Smith in the head during pile ups, not metaphorically.

While I am very shocked at his comments I am not really that offended by them. I mean if you guys have every played football (especially Offensive Line) at times you are taught to use and opponents weakness to completely get them out of the game (not meaning hurt). I mean the game is a violent game anyways and he really didn't have to encourage his players in that way since those guys were already playing hurt and there was no guarentee they would re-injure themselves.

I think the biggest issue is him name calling and putting targets on them, that's the only issue I see. He will probably never have a chance of being a head coach again but believe if the NFL ban's him he will find a job in the NCAA.

He's a lousy human being by those comments. I hope he never coaches again. So much for preaching how much sports can teach young kids when you hear crap like this.

For all those dummies out there talking about similar things are said in other NFL meetings, should be shot and hung for your stupidity! If a coach has to preach and employe players to do what he (Gregg Williams) has done; are they really "COACHES" or MOB bosses". Millions play the game the right way and have great success, and millions have suffered career ending injures from just running on a field. For all those other players that bought into his scheme/bounty shouldn't be dealt with to the extreme, as they have to listen to their coaches in order for them to make a dollar; but they should have known better, and should have said something.
Williams has sealed his faith as a "coach" in the NFL.
I known stuff happenes in pile ups, where guys scratch, punch, and spit in your helmet; but i dont believe people should be coached to intentionally injure another player, whomever they are. A good hit is a good hit; and on defence, when you make a good hit, you want they OFF. player to think twice about running your way again, as you plan to give them the same hard "clean" hit. We are/were athelets, not hitman!

cheers

I feel this whole thing is so hypocritical, people want to take the moral high ground here, and it's bull****. The NFL is a violent sport that is that, speeches like that are given by every coach before every game, defenses have one job, and that is to stop the offense by hitting, tackling and just plain intimi****** them. The Saints have rarely been caught giving dirty hits, yet they want to crucify their whole staff because the asked their players to hit the other team hard, please, if that's the case just get rid of the NFL all together, because I don't get the message. By the way those "best hits of the week" videos on the NFL site are quite popular, huh, weird!

TKlaus is correct. This is common place in football. Please stop taking everything so damn literally people. These are not comments that are meant to maim anyone. This is how football coaches have always fired up the defense prior to a game. Only questionable comment was the ACL comment. Everything else is honest football.

Only thing wrong is the bounty part. All coaches tell there players to hit hard, take a man out. Its "kill The man with the ball". he's not the only one that give motivational speeches like that. targeting an injury is suspect, but Im sure players do this anyways. and other coaches in the locker room give these type of motivational speeches all the time.
Please dont sissify the sport. NFL can potentially become powderpuff football.
