Explosive Speech from Gregg Williams...Should he Coach Again? Stuck
Posted on April 5, 2012 at 12:31 PM.

Oops.

Gregg Williams, former Saints Defensive Coordinator and one of the center pieces of 'Bounty-Gate', can't be feeling the greatest this morning, after an explosive speech taped by a documentary filmmaker was released to ESPN.

Here are some direct quotes taken from the above article from the tape:

“Kill the head and the body will die. We’ve got to do everything in the world to make sure we kill Frank Gore’s head. We want him running sideways. We want his head sideways.’’

“We need to find out in the first two series of the game … that little wide receiver, No. 10 (
Kyle Williams), about his concussion. We need to (expeletive) put a lick on him right now.

“(Receiver
Michael Crabtree) becomes human when we take out that outside ACL.’’

On the surface, I wouldn't think too much about it. But given the outside circumstances, we know these comments aren't just a coach trying to fire up his players.

Problem is, when you name players and specific injuries...well you cross a line. I personally think football is on a one-way path to becoming a sport that is a former shell of itself...a violent game cannot be made completely safe without losing the essence of what it once was.

But players being paid to injure their peers? Sometimes you can go too far. While I personally believe Coach Williams should get another chance at some point well down the line -- I think it's best he doesn't show up anywhere for awhile at any level.

What do you all think? What should Gregg Williams' punishment be? Should he get the chance to coach again?

Screw Gregg Williams. Get him out of the game.

The long suspension is well warranted. The speech ticks me off as well as anybody else.

But eventually I say give him another shot.

Not a big Williams fan. Football is violent and motivation is necessary and when this is taken out of context, you get hyperbole! Goodell may be heading for the exit next. You can only clean up a violent game so much before you eliminate its essence!

Most coaches preach intensity, intimidation, hard hitting and hard tackling. They put out injury reports for a reason and it's not just for handicappers. All teams key on opponents injuries. It's how you win. When a player plays great even injured, he is lauded as heroic. I didn't like hearing him targeting specific ligaments, or even the knee in general, but I don't think it is something specific only to Williams. Besides, if players like Vick, Suh, etc. can come back, Williams should get his second chance too.

I'm sure damn near every coach gives some sort of "rip their heads off" type speech before a game or at practice, but I think it's a bit different when you're telling guys you'll pay them cash specifically to roll on a guy's ankle or hit a QB in the head repeatedly during a pile up. The fact that this recording came after the NFL had already notified the Saints of an ongoing investigation into the issue makes it pretty hard to sympathize for this guy in my opinion.

It will be interesting to see if any other similar stories come out now that this one's completely out of the bag.
