Baseball Game First Impressions Stuck
Posted on March 7, 2012 at 04:20 PM.
It's that time of the year again, both baseball games are on store shelves and OS is here to provide coverage. Here are my thoughts on both games after about a day of playing.

MLB 2K12

If this is 2K Sports' baseball swan song, they certainly didn't try very hard. Framerate issues are simply annoying, and while the presentation is still good the graphics are a long way behind The Show's still -- it's hard to buy into the presentation when players don't look like their real to life counterparts many times.

Otherwise, the new pitching system is way too finicky -- as your ratings shouldn't change a whole bunch after giving up a simple hit as they do in the game. I'm honestly quite disappointed after only just one day and a couple games of playing 2K12.

MLB 12: The Show (PS3)

The Show is a different story, it's still quality although it seems like this year's game I've ran into a few more bugs than in years prior. Many of the changes in this years game are under the hood and you won't notice many right off of the bat (puns!!!).

The hit variety is improved from what I see, although my time is limited no doubt compared to many others. Pulse pitching is different and does take getting used to, but after I started getting the hang of it I really started to come around to it a bit. While I'm not overwhelmed about The Show's quality this year, I think it's because the game is going for refinement moreso than revolution and thus you get a feeling of 'been there done that' as a vet to the series. This is both good and bad, and depending on how much you enjoyed last year's game, that will probably determine how much you enjoy this years.

Other Odds and Ends

Right now I'm about to finally delve into the Vita version of The Show and I will certainly write back here with an update on my thoughts on that version. I'm sure my thoughts will be pretty lofty if it delivers a console like experience on my handheld.

For now, what does everyone else think? Are you happy with your baseball game purchase thus far?

So you comment on the shows hit variety but not the VASTLY improved hit variety of 2k? Good reporting!

I just love Sanner's reporting. He should stick to his blog posts which have extreme reactions to not so extreme events....

I love mlb the show that being said I think the sore spot is definately the commentary. Its lackluster at best and Karros drags it down even more than last year. The presentation is incredible and the overlays are beautiful. The camera cuts to the managers and the reactions of the pitchers to a bad call makes you feel like your watching real live tv. I definately see where people could say there isnt any innovation or change but they took a great game and made it better visually and down to the nuts and bolts of the game

A few more bugs?? The show plays fantastic out of the box. I dunno what that guy is talking about. I certainly haven't run into any issues. MLB 12 the show is I would say at least 5 times better than MLB 11 the show. Just the presentation to the new sounds to just the new atmosphere of the game is just amazing.

I'll also add that the new "ball physics" take the game to a whole different level. It's amazing to see how hit balls react off the bat. It's just a pure joy to see while playing.

Nothing quite as exciting as a few paragraph impressions (and no full review) after the game has already been on store shelves for a couple of days. Take your time OS. I'll just patiently wait for your full review, perhaps I'll have it by opening day?

I'm still playing '11 but anyone who says they saved $60 isn't looking hard enough. I was able to get '12 for $48...it will be some time before any sale is better than that deal. If you don't like the game or don't believe it's that much of an improvement, that is fine but don't think you are saving yourself $ because you didn't buy it Day 1 (and plan to later down the line).

In mlb 2k12 you cant even make your my player black can u do it in mlb the show 12 if so let me know

He says it has more bugs but doesn't at least give 1 example. I have played about 10 or so games and have not encountered a bug yet.

It's called brevity guys, can't list every little detail within an article. We have a bugs thread for a list of the bugs in the game, I've noticed several of these already, seems to be more than last year for me, your mileage may vary: http://www.operationsports.com/forum...es-thread.html

Jimbo -- Not sure if you are being facetious or serious, but we tend to take our time on reviews to get the whole experience. Releasing reviews after a couple of games seems so IGN these days. We'd rather be right on the score and wait a few days than wrong on the score and have it up within a couple hours of having the game.

Disappointing about MLB 2k12

@RockitOldSchool I dont blame you for doing the smart thing and waiting for the price to drop off on a video game and sports games are normally the fastest to drop in price, however, the game wont drop down 10 dollars a month and it wont be 40 dollars in a couple of months. That may be the case for the mlb 2kseries but the show wont be less than 50 used. I am sorry but when early may comes in and you go look for a used copy of the show you might save 10 bucks but i dont feel that is worth it. Maybe by late june or early july but a few months is wishful thinking.

as a owner of mlb show 10,11 and now 12 is hands down better

I'll be able to pick up The Show at my local for $35 used, in a month.
It never fails. Patience is a must for sports gamer's who want to save a few bucks.
