Baseball Game First Impressions Stuck
Posted on March 7, 2012 at 03:20 PM.
It's that time of the year again, both baseball games are on store shelves and OS is here to provide coverage. Here are my thoughts on both games after about a day of playing.

MLB 2K12

If this is 2K Sports' baseball swan song, they certainly didn't try very hard. Framerate issues are simply annoying, and while the presentation is still good the graphics are a long way behind The Show's still -- it's hard to buy into the presentation when players don't look like their real to life counterparts many times.

Otherwise, the new pitching system is way too finicky -- as your ratings shouldn't change a whole bunch after giving up a simple hit as they do in the game. I'm honestly quite disappointed after only just one day and a couple games of playing 2K12.

MLB 12: The Show (PS3)

The Show is a different story, it's still quality although it seems like this year's game I've ran into a few more bugs than in years prior. Many of the changes in this years game are under the hood and you won't notice many right off of the bat (puns!!!).

The hit variety is improved from what I see, although my time is limited no doubt compared to many others. Pulse pitching is different and does take getting used to, but after I started getting the hang of it I really started to come around to it a bit. While I'm not overwhelmed about The Show's quality this year, I think it's because the game is going for refinement moreso than revolution and thus you get a feeling of 'been there done that' as a vet to the series. This is both good and bad, and depending on how much you enjoyed last year's game, that will probably determine how much you enjoy this years.

Other Odds and Ends

Right now I'm about to finally delve into the Vita version of The Show and I will certainly write back here with an update on my thoughts on that version. I'm sure my thoughts will be pretty lofty if it delivers a console like experience on my handheld.

For now, what does everyone else think? Are you happy with your baseball game purchase thus far?

After the 3mb I am seeing little lag if any on the 360. Online I played last night and other than some minor lag on gap shots it was flawless. The lighting in 2K is drastically improved. Yes it does have some ugly graphical moments but I have not had this much fun playing a baseball game since MVP 05. Anyone on the fence about getting this for the 360 needs to stop reading these reviews. (The demo was aweful, the full version is so much better). This game is alot of fun..

I've bought every Show game from '07 thru 2011 on day 1, more often than not driving to every Wal-Mart in CNY after midnight to find it. I got lucky in 2010 when there was a midnight release at Gamestop for another game and I went there for The Show. That being said, this is the first year since it's debut on the PS3 that I didn't get it on day 1. The Show is easily my most played game every year but play time with it had dwindled each year starting in 2010 I think due to the massive jump in quality from '08-'09, which I still believe is the single biggest improvement in a sports game year to year. Always, I am probably guilty of expecting to much each year from San Diego Studios which is why I haven't been as excited for release the last few years. Sadly, I didn't even realize this was the release week until my best friend texted me all excited asking if I got the Vita or PS3 version...I had to ask him "of what game?". Maybe it's because winters in Upstate NY are so notoriously bad that pretty much if you hate cold and snow the only thing to do between Nov and April is to play video games, this year hasn't been like that AT ALL sie it's been a very mild winter. I still have games, sealed in the packages that I bought during Black Friday sales. Oh well, I'll get the game eventually and will buy it new so the devs get the money, there's just to many other things right now to catch up on. Sorry for the rant...

I understand the goal was a quick look at the game and not a full review, but I have to agree with the poster above. If you are going to reference the increase in bugs you have seen in the few games you played, then you should have given a quick summary of what those bugs were that YOU did personally see during those games. It would have added value and professionalism to the piece. Not trying to be a jerk, but you quickly dismissed the guy above and I actually thought he was right.

But you see this game doesn't suck by any means, in fact this game is in fact much better than last year's game by a long shot, there are so many new details added to this game while maintaining the same successful core gameplay (are you listening NBA 2k?). Where to start, the presentation this year is at a whole new level, it looks and feel like a real baseball broadcast, graphics are even better than last year's, yes there a few players that dont look that well but come on there are thousands of players in the roster they are bound to miss a few (altho they didnt add dreads to Jose Reyes...) Ball physics, it doesnt matter how many videos you see on youtube, or how many reviews you read, you wont know how sick this new feature is until you play the game. The way the ball reacts when it come of the pitcher's hand, or when it comes off the bat it feel's real, the way it behaves on certain surfaces, wet grass, warning track, dirt you name it the ball will react appropriately. Also the sound of the game is just breath taking, the crack of the bat the zoom of the ball as it's traveling at 90+ MPH towards you, the glove getting pounded by a 100MPH line drive, the ball hitting the grass, again, this is something you need to experience for yourself. Lastly the game is packed with very good and extensive game modes. So please dont take the 2 word review

I was being facetious. Rarely am I serious, especially with regards to videogames. Thank you for the explanation on your review process. Sometimes I can be a bit impatient. I will look elsewhere for the MLB The Show 2012 reviews and check back with OS in a week or so.

2K did a excellent job with this years game. Sure, it may not be "The Show", but it is 2K's best effort to date and it plays a good game of baseball. Online is smooth as well.

2k12 blows chunks! Buying a PS3 and The Show! Go to Best Buy and play the demos if you don't own either... you will cry when you see 2k12, it's so ugly.

Off Topic;
Chris, I just noticed that you're a storm chaser. Any big ones this year?
