Unsurprising News: OS'ers Pessimistic EA Footballs Future Stuck
Posted on January 30, 2012 at 06:13 PM.

In the poll I posted this morning, I raised the question of whether you guys thought that there would be a 'great' football game from EA Sports through the rest of this generation. You seem to have answered with an overwhelming no.

As of this writing, only 11% of you actually thought a great game was coming while 82% remained quite pessimistic to completely 'waiting and seeing' about the future for EA Football.

I can only bet that this basically revolves around the fact that most gamers on OS have become quite jaded towards EA football in recent years -- and for many it's for good reason.

But I'm wondering how much of the hate stems from people who have played the game for a long period of time vs. a shorter period of time. Think about it like this, I personally have played Madden and NCAA Football for years now, and I feel the games are just completely stale.

There's literally no way you can make the argument the game isn't to me.

But, and I'd like you guys who might be new to the series to chime in via the comments, what if you hadn't been playing the game for several years and simply played it for what it was? Do you enjoy the game? I theorize that the answer is likely yes to that line of questioning.

That's not excusing EA mind you. In fact, I feel it's an even greater indictment of how the series really just doesn't reinvent itself in a way that makes gamers want to keep playing -- but yet the game continues to sale at record pace.

So my final thought today -- why do so many people continue to buy into the series when so many of the series' most hardcore fans (the ones who actually go online to talk about it) seem to absolutely despise it at this point? Why such a disconnect?

What do you think?

I think we all just hit the wall. Bad game after bad game, I'm not giving EA another cent until the next gen.

Honestly though.....most OSers that vote in these type polls are gonna lean toward the negative. (I didn't vote yes, just being honest)

In comparison...I'd like to see the same type of poll for The Show and NBA 2K and see the difference. I bet the results would be pessimistic even though those two are arguably the two best sports games.

My last copy I purchased was Madden 06. I was so disappointed of that game because it didn't exploit the potential the XBox 360 has to offer. From that year on I was reading through forums and threads realizing that just little has been done up to this day in order to make the Madden NFL a worthy next-gen football simulation.

I have to laugh because we were talking about the same spinning of facts in my Organizational Behavior class.

There is a massive difference from complete pessimism and optimism. Claiming 81% believe we won't have anything isn't no where near as apt as saying about two thirds don't believe it. 1/3 is a lot greater than 2/3, not to mention OS has a community that borders on the extreme side of fandom (not meant as an insult, we just like our representation of sports).

It's skewed information, not really worthy of an article, or even a poll. It's pretty much been the general attitude since EA stopped making patches for '12.

EA nuked 2K and we are seeing the long-term result of that business decision.

The only way we can speak to EA as consumers is with our wallets. But I doubt most are willing to do that. That is, in fact, exactly what EA is banking on. So nothing changes.

I refuse to purchase these games at full price anymore. I paid 25 bucks for Madden 12 this week and bought Ncaa 12 for 35 in October. I feel for what i paid im finally getting my moneys worth this year. I also think this year was good enough that if M13 and N13 get bad reviews, i will probably ride with these until 14 series. I think buying these games is like christmas in that u use to love it as a child but it got worst and worst as your grew older, but you still celebrate each year because hey "It's Christmas".

This isn't a surprise at all. Every Madden on the 360 has gotten better each year but everyone is still hung up in the past.

The funny thing is that I'm sure a lot of the people that voted 'No, definitely not' voted that way because there isn't a halftime show or a end of the week highlight reel.

Madden 12 wasn't a bad game. I loved it. It's not perfect by any means but with a few changes going into next year, if executed correctly I think Madden 13 will be a great football game.

It's easy for Madden to "get better each year" when there are so many things that need fixing.

The true test shouldn't be comparing Madden to previous Maddens, but comparing Madden to the sport of professional football.

I played Madden and NCAA since around 2000 or so, buying the games every other year, and then took a break/stopped playing any of them for 2 years. I started playing NCAA again last year with NCAA 11(got it on sale). I enjoyed playing it, even though it there were problems. I decided to get Madden 12 and NCAA12 (buy 1 for 40 get 1 free) and I find it hard to play Madden. I have to force myself to get though a season just to get to the off season and import my draft class (which is broken). After 2 1/2 season I put Madden down and now just play NCAA.

There are problems with both games that have been there every year since this current gen. They haven't been fixed and wont since the next gen consoles are a few years out. Current gens games still dont have all the features that the prev gen games had. I feel like EA releases the same game every years and add some old features back from older versions and some new feature that one uses. EA likes to take the easy way out to save on costs. They're just going to wait for the next gen consoles to fix their game engine or use a different one.

I was a big fan of ps2 Madden and have been playing football games for years. I completely agree. The game has gotten repetitive and stale. At the same time, the ps2 games just captured the essence of football better. Since I first bought Madden 09 on Ps3, the game can't hold my interest for more than a couple weeks. I can't get through 4 weeks in Franchise mode and it starts collecting dust. I go back to Madden 08 or NFL 2k5 until the next current Madden drops and do it over again.

Madden 13 is going to have to blow people away to interest me at this point. It's gotta change something about the way its played, I can't play the same knock off game anymore.

Speaking for myself, I really enjoyed madden on the ps2 and was very excited to see what they could do on a new generation of platforms with more computing power. What has frustrated me, and a lot of gamers I think, is the fact that a lot of features that we enjoyed on a "lower tier" gaming platform have not been incorporated on the newer platform. Things like position battles and the Tony Bruno show were well done and gave the series great replayability. Heck, even madden on the PS1 had pregame video lead-ins with John Madden talking to Pat Summeral. I remember playing with the Bucs and Warrick Dunn got hurt, and before the next game Madden stated "...well they lost their running back, we'll see how they cope with that loss". A little touch like that adds depth. Fifteen years later we don't have anything like that in our football game.

Unless Madden 13 is a completely different game in how it plays and the presentation is finally up to par, I will not be purchasing another EA Sports Football game this gen.

We have no other football game to play except EA's.

Been playing video game football since Tecmo Bowl... played them all, Gameday, 2k, Madden, Joe Montana, Bill Walsh, Mutant League, APF2k, etc, etc.

The consumer is just tired of over glorified gimmicks and unrealistic gameplay... while feeling like they are paying for roster updates every year.

Well personally I liked NCAA 11. I agree with others that these kind of polls are meant to generate a negative response and should be taken with a grain of salt. This one specifically is pretty biased since there's not even an option for people to say "I already think EA's made a great game this generation"

# 15 sactown_13 @ Jan 31
Its not about the presentation, its the sub-par gameplay for me. I want a madden game to be great, but so many things need to be fixed in such little time.
