Will the lockout be a negative for NBA Games? Stuck
Posted on November 14, 2011 at 11:50 PM.

It seems as if NBA 2K12 had a good October (at least compared to it's peers). Of course, there's so much more to this story than just that -- as video game sales have been having issues for the past year and even with a strong lineup of games, October saw little growth over last year.

Given the lack of hard data publicly available in NPD reports these days, hard game sales numbers are hard to come by. But, in this comparison we'll try our best with some data from the historically unreliable (but yet best we have to offer) VGChartz. Compare the two links of 360 sales figures of the game:

NBA 2K12
NBA 2K11

There's something that sticks out at you. Whereas 2K11's sales saw a secondary weekly spike last year, and generally stayed strong through the entire 10 week curve; 2K12's story is different. The game sold huge in the first week, and the sales have trended below last year's, significantly so the past several weeks.

Right now, it seems clear NBA 2K12 will not be outselling it's predecessor, perhaps taking a sales cut of up to half. That's going to leave a mark no matter how you slice it.

Now fast forward to next season when we are expecting two NBA games to hit store shelves. The question becomes three fold: How many people can EA entice to buy their game, will there be enough to bring EA back the next year, and finally will there be enough buyers available in the first place?

The answer lies in all sorts of things, but the lack of a 2011-2012 season would kill the NBA's popularity like it has other sports. The NHL is still trying to recover from a similar situation. Baseball took several years to recover from the 1994 strike.

Now Basketball seems heading down that same dark road. And with the NBA being one of the only sports with same-league competition these days -- I can't help but think that might be something which is numbered. With sales appearing to be heavily slumping for 2K12, and with more competition coming from EA next year which will at least take some customers away from the 2K series, the basketball gaming landscape is heading for an interesting period to say the least.

Do you think the lockout is a chief contributor to 2K12's slumping sales? Should 2K (or 2K fans) be worried about the future? Sound off!

I agree with jwilphl. This is the time of year where I'm usually focusing more on whatever college basketball game is out at the time. Maybe that's why I'm finding more fault with NBA 2K than I usually do: because it's getting 100% of my basketball attention of instead of the usual 50%.

Um... What NBA 'games'? 2K12 is the only OFFICIALLY licensed NBA simulation out there now, isn't it?

It should be said, and I hope you are listening Players Association, you are looking nothing but bad in all of this. You guys better save that original 50/50 offer, and get your asses back on the court. In this economy, you guys are looking like idiots AND greedy bastards. Right now, the average NBA player makes $5 MILLION dollars a year, and correct me if I am wrong, but if they accept the 50/50 deal from the league last offered, the average salary would STILL be above $5 million a year.

Yeah players, keep this **** up and see what happens to your salaries and popularity over about the next 12 years or so. Even the most popular sport in this country, the NFL, knew better than to let this happen. You guys are looking pretty dumb right now. Why don't you ask MLB players about their last major work stoppage, and how that worked out for them.

YOU HAVE NO LEVERAGE PLAYERS! WORK OUT THE 50/50 DEAL!

Everybody must have forgot that 2K phoned this one in. 2K dropped the ball this year, they put out an unfinished product and people don't like to buy junk in a bad economy. The lockout may have something to do with it but so does the flawed gameplay

The lockout is the primary contributer I'm sure. But the product is lacking in key areas and I suspect there was some negative word of mouth. 2K12 is an unfinished game. lots of issues from the gameplay to the simulation/management logic. But yeah. the lockout doesnt help at all for the mainstream nba gamer who likes to play with 2ks roster updates etc.

Good to hear that gamers still equate video games to real basketball. On the other hand, it just doesn't add up because the same people whine and cry about b.s. fantasy world mess like My Player. I don't get it entirely but it is what it is. NBA 2K12 is another great rep of real basketball.

Yes the Nba lockout is affecting sales. people would rather wait to see if their is going to be a season before buying the game.

this is what happens when they take out crew

This is too bad. Game is real good even with the rookies and NBA Today functioning. My buddy who lives and breathes 2K basketball is having difficulty enjoying the game without rookies. Hasn't really bothered me yet.

I just hope the greedy idiots enjoy serving me a burger on my way to the Soccer game. Love Basketball games but I cannot bring myself to buy this year simply because I cannot stand the thought of people who are all making 6 figures or more complaining about anything involving money. Wish EA and 2K would pull their heads out of their 4th point of contact and make a College game again and these worthless jerks enjoy their negotiations.

It was really simple for me. NBA2K11 is such a great game and with an awesome roster sharing community I found not one compelling reason to get 2K12. The Legends mode was the only reason I even thought about making the purchase. But I will wait for it to be 20 bucks for one game mode.

Then I finally played it. I did not find it to be that much better than 2K11. yeah things were tweaked and the play by play even better....but again not compelling enough to plunk down 60 bucks.

And then like others have mentioned the competition is so stiff this year. Batman AC, Skyrim, Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3 etc etc.

I have a hard time believing the lockout is causing most of the sales pain. I just think 2K11 was so good most older gamers like myself rather allocate the gaming dollars to other titles that are fresh. Sports games are no longer must buys every year. In fact they have not been for me over the last 6 years. The yearly cycle is not a good business model anymore. But game developers have no choice with all the license deals etc.

I am a lockout victim although I did purchase the game on release day. I played it for two days. Enjoyed it. But have yet to pop her back in. I think it makes me sad. Makes me realize what I'm missing. I'll stick with Fifa and Call of Duty until the lockout is lifted. My mini embargo.

This game isn't selling because its buggy in the WORST possible areas. If you like to play online - too bad sucka, the net code is so buggy its unplayable. If you like to play offline - again your screwed, we didn't update a thing in franchise mode except cut scenes. If that doesn't ruin your off-line experience we still got you covered - after 15 or so games, your framerate will be so slow that you can't even play.

Why would anyone want a game with bad online play, no updates to franchise, gamebreaking framerate bugs, and a developer that wont patch its broken POS?
