What's Hot/What's Not With Madden NFL 12's Franchise Mode Stuck
Posted on May 16, 2011 at 01:05 PM.

Finally, Madden gamers everywhere got a look at the newly revamped Franchise mode in Madden NFL 12 this morning via the missives of Josh Looman.

However, for the ADD crowd (and for those who somehow want to hear what I have to say, funny thought I know) here's what I thought of each announcement in the blog in a slightly revamped 'What's Hot/What's Not' style.

What's Hot

Franchise Mode Dynamic Player Performance - This is an interesting addition which will either make or break Madden NFL 12. If it works as described -- not always the case with new features -- then players will play realistically inconsistent (or consistent). This might allow some teams to get red hot that probably aren't that good while others go ice cold (see: 2010 Cowboys).

Expanded Rosters and Cut Days - Let's face it, we all have been waiting for this. Hip, hip, hooray!

New Free Agent Bidding Feature - If this works like it did in Head Coach (but better) then this is a big time change for the better.

Trading Future Draft Picks - Finally I can be an irresponsible GM/Owner.

Progression Tuning - Anything other than last year's system is a step up. Ok yeah, that's probably a lie, but how its described (progress vs peers) is so much better than last year it's really as if last year's progression system was a sick joke.

The Wait and See

New Rookie Scouting System - Yes, it's something new...but I'm really cautious on this. It sounds as if rookies are going to be arbitrarily locked out in terms of info in an unrealistic manner. Every draft room board has physicals on every player....if nothing else you should have that info.

Player Roles - I like the idea behind this, but let's see the execution. This can either add another layer of depth and strategy to franchise mode or it can be a useless gimmick. The jury is out.

Increased Injury Chances and Injured Reserve Fixed - I'm getting the 'overdone for $500 Alex' feeling here. But if done right then huzzah, victory! If nothing else, it's a good thing to have IR working right.

Franchise Mode Dynamic Gameplans - Having a team adjust to personnel is a good thing. Want to really impress me? Have a team adjust to coaches and coordinators in a dynamic universe.

Revamped Team Re-Sign and New Cut Dead Weight Logic - I'm so jaded about this that it's going to take me seeing this to believe it. If true, I'm as happy as a bug in a rug.
New Salary System - Again, I'm just jaded and to prove a point, I'm waiting to see. But if this is done right (as it should have been from step one) it's nothing but good.

New Coach Impacts - I'm pretty sure this is a first step to something I described above. Coaches are a big part of the game, not as much as in college, but still a big part. They determine play-calling policy, etc. so anything to make the coaches a bigger part of Madden is a good first step.

So what do you think of the new features in Franchise mode? Let me know by commenting on this blog!

Hey I would like to know if we have the practice squads like in Head Coach were you had to make 8 players sit before every game.

I am more than excited, as a hardcore offline franchise gamer. I would disagree that Player Roles are "Wait and See", due to them being in legacy gen. Looman was in charge of that too, and the PS2 F-Modes are spoken of quite highly around here, as is HC09. I trust him that it will work, he's earned that.

Wait and see all the way for me.

I know there will need to be some type of Patch needed after release, but hope not too much doesn't work as advertised.

Side note"
Chris, could you do something like this for the NCAA side also?

We might not agree on everything, but you are honest with what you think about a game and NCAA needs a little of that right now.

I will admit, the franchise blog was VERY, VERY, good to read...its nice to see that level of attention is being paid to that mode...I would like to know if there are some owner aspects to it as well...i.e. ticket prices, concessions prices, relocate team, etc...that were previously on old gen...

Having the franchise blog is certainly refreshing for the offline players like myself, but with so many games coming out this year, i just wont have the resources to cop madden this year, but im glad they are finally taking some steps in the direction of offline play...i may just have to wait until next gen tbh

it looks like the ps2 days will be back. I have not enjoyed madden since 2004. It used to be an all year game for me and the past six years I am lucky if I am playing past week 14 in the season.......they didnt talk about build a stadium, its hard to start a franchise with the vikings when you know a new stadium will have to happen eventually - i am pumped about the news and the end of aug couldnt come sooner!

If it plays like it is listed, then this should be a very good game

Still wonder if there's any type of newsfeed or anything for headlines within franchise.

Anyway,that said......impressive improvements.

Any word if all of these features are included in Online Franchise? Also, will we be able to turn an offline franchise into an online franchise and vice versa like NCAA Dynasty?

I think all the tuning in the game like progression tuning, is a wait a see thing. The game so far looks amazing considering what we can edit at this point though.

If somewhere down the line we could edit the formula for progression...that would crazy.

Player Roles were in old-gen was done decent. I'd say the jury should be in on that.

In the franchise it would be nice to have a message system letting you know if some team wants to trade with you. It works really well in Front Office Football. Teams would offer you players or draft picks for whoever they wanted.

Noticed something kinda funny in the screenshot. Almost the entire crowd is black. Haha

Rookie Scouting is very well implemented! Cut Dead weight logic sounded awesome, but I didn't get to test it out. Makes a ton of sense though. Roles should help the logic a bit, Sanchez is younger so he is gonna start over Brunell etc.

Salary Cap Logic to me is when a Player retires your still on the hook for the rest of his signing bonus. It should count against the cap.
This would make people think about giving an aging player big signing bonus just to keep him around.
