This is more of a quick tip rather than an in-depth blog, but LEARN YOUR AUDIBLES!
I use custom playbooks for Madden 12, but it still applies no matter what version you are playing. I am not only talking about your normal audibles, but more specifically your formation specific audibles.
You see, it's not only good to know what you have at your disposal, but it also keeps you from picking certain plays in the huddle. For example, why would you call HB Zone in the huddle when that is your default run from the I Pro formation? Some formations have inside runs, and some have outside runs as their default run audible. Know which is true for each formation. I would much rather call something like HB Counter Weak or HB Toss. When I come to the line, if it looks like the D is balanced and ready to contain the counter, I can audible out of the play. If you called HB Zone, there is no run to audible into.
Another example, from the Shotgun - Heavy, we have 3 plays I really like. The Jet Sweep, Power Fk Jet, and PA Jet Sweep. Those are the only three plays I have in my custom book for that formation, as I don't like the rest. Well, when I want to call a play from the Shotgun - Heavy, I will call the Jet Sweep. In my audibles, I learned that the Power Fk Jet was the default run and obviously the PA was the other option. So, I come to the line, look how the D is set and depending on how I feel, I might audible into one of the other two plays. I can't audible into the Jet Sweep, so that is the only play I call from that formation... but not the only play I run from it.
I have focused on running examples, but the same is true for your passing plays. Learn what your "Short" and "Deep" passing audibles are and be sure not to call those in the huddle. One of the ways I am able to remember most all my audibles is also because I try to keep my custom playbook simple. My custom book has about 225 plays, and only 3 formation types: I Formation, Single Back and Shotgun. Of those, I have a number of different fronts, but only those three main ideas. Also it helps to go into practice and just spend time learning your audibles.
This will hopefully continue to help you get better at Madden and improve your sim-style experience.
