Cover 2

In this blog we will talk about the Cover 2.

Cover 2 Soft. Shift and crash the line left if you want to try and help free up the Will. Flip the play if you want to send the Sam. Don't forget to shift and crash the line right if you also want to help free up the Sam with an overload.

The OLB Blitz that compliments the above play. Feel free to shift and crash the line to either side to help free up an OLB on passing plays.

Another cover 2 soft, but this time it Sends the Jack. Flip it to send the Mike. These are my "go to" base cover 2 plays. There is no complimenting MLB Cross fire blitz, so you have to use this play and tell the Mike to blitz manually if you want. I would user the Will in that case to help cover the middle of the field. You can also tell the Sam to blitz to create a Cover 2 version of Storm Brave. Additionally, you can tell the Will to blitz and user the Mike, or flip the play and do the reverse of my last two suggestions. These are all combinations I wish EA would have just put in the game, or at least given us an editor to create on our own.

Cover 2 Hard. Remember what I said about Cover 2 soft? It applies here as well.

Here is the Double OLB blitz compliment to the above play.

Here is the Sam Mike version of the above play. Flip for a Will Jack blitz.

Refer back to the Cover 2 Sink I already talked about. Do the same thing here, only we already have a potential Will/Jack combo, but no Jack/Sam; Will/Mike; or double MLB blitz.

I love this play as either a run blitz, or a blitz on 3rd and 10+. On 3rd and long just back up the coverage and user the Mike. The heat is coming and should cause problems before the offense can get someone open beyond the 1st down marker. Against the run, I find it far more reliable than an Engage 8.

That's it for the Cover 2. I tend to use the Cover 2 soft plays and save the Cover 2 hard for inside the red zone, and really inside the 15 or so. The sidelines are left wide open, but when your back is against the wall, the field is compressed and subsequently the zone are too. Cover 2 hard plays suddenly go from being a liability in the open field, to being difficult to complete passes against. Combined with a blitz and user control over the middle, I have gotten a lot of key sacks and takeaways online and against the AI.

The weakness of the cover 2 is deep over the middle. If the offense sends someone deep and short, you have to respect the deep throw and give up 4+ easy yards. That's why I tend to call a lot of Cover 3 and spent more time focused on that. I use cover 2 as a way to mix it up and keep the offense honest as they try to attack the sidelines [the weakness of the Cover 3.]

This cover 2 man play is the only one I could find that I would be willing to call. Flip it if you want to send the Sam instead. If you see a FB on the field, think about usering the LB assigned to him and be ready to manually blitz or drop into a hook zone over the middle to help in coverage.
