Texas State 66, Georgia State 17

Atlanta, GA -- It was hard to keep up with the scoring going on as the Bobcats handed the Georgia State Panthers its seventh straight loss of the season. Quarterback Jordan Moore threw for six touchdowns, but it was only one of the big performances on the field. Halfback Terrance Franks ran for 154 yards. Wide receiver Brandon Smith scored three touchdowns and so did tight end Bradley Miller. Georgia State just didn't have the horses to compete here.

Texas State at Georgia State

This one looks to be a blowout. Georgia State is 0-6 and have already been blown out by an FCS team this year. Their losses have been closer as of late, but the Bobcats are superior in terms of ratings all across the board. Dennis Franchione and company would have to really screw this up to get a loss in the Georgia Dome.

Texas State has added even more good news this week as the three defensive prospects they wanted most have all committed to play in San Marcos next year. Middle linebacker Chad Dorsey, and strong safeties Kellen Freeman and Eric Welsh have all given their commits. This is huge news for Texas State, as they upgrade key ingredients for a dominant 4-2-5 defense.

Texas State has also received a commit from 1-star kicker Stan Bell. Not a huge get, but with Will Johnson graduating at the end of the year, it was needed.

Texas State 23, Louisiana-Lafayette 20

San Marcos, TX -- Bobcats quarterback Jordan Moore must have been having flashbacks to the loss to the Ragin' Cajuns last year, because he once again threw an interception on the opening drive. He would end the game with 3 interceptions and only one touchdown, but Texas State came through with the win in a different fashion. This time they had to rely on the defense.

The first interception by Moore resulted in a ULL field goal, putting them up 3-0. But Texas State figured out a way to get their guys on the board with a Moore touchdown pass to Demun Mercer. Will Johnson missed the extra point to add to the tension. After Moore's second interception, the Cajuns scored a touchdown on an Alonzo Harris 5 yard run. The score at the half was 10-6 ULL.

The Bobcats finally got their act together as Terrance Franks ran it in for a Texas State score and the lead. But the Cajuns were right in stride with the Bobcats, and tied it with a field goal. Franks matched his touchdown run with another one, making it 20-13 Bobcats. Sealing the deal, Will Johnson kicked a field goal to make it 23-13. ULL scored again but it was too late.

Mercer was the leading receiver with 85 yards, but right behind him was Franks with 82. That's what kind of game this was. Texas State had to scrap for every yard in this one, but fortunately they were on the winning side of it. And this game has made them bowl eligible already. All in all, a good day.

Louisiana-Lafayette at Texas State

I can't think of a more exciting conference opener. The rematch with ULL, the only team that beat the Bobcats last year, will have San Marcos rocking I can assure you. ULL is 3-2, but one of those losses came at the hands of #6 Texas A&M. This will undoubtedly be Texas State's biggest test so far, and perhaps this season.

There are a number of recruits visiting during this special game, including middle linebacker Chad Dorsey, a guy the Bobcats really want. Let's hope we don't disappoint.

Two recruits visited the campus of Texas State during their victory over Idaho last week, and it finalized their decision to commit to playing for the Bobcats.

Frank Myers, a 3-star center from Chula Vista, CA, liked what he saw from the offense in both the passing and running game. At 6'1" 293 (65 OVR), he looks to crack the starting lineup in his early years at TX State.

Ben Whitaker, a 3-star cornerback from Spring, TX, is a balanced player who can give run support when needed. He is 5'10" and 175 lbs. (66 OVR).

Texas State 59, Idaho 10

San Marcos, TX -- Bobcats quarterback Jordan Moore threw for 422 yards and 6 TD passes as Texas State beat up on the lowly Idaho Vandals. The big receiver of the day was Demun Mercer who racked up 174 receiving yards, including a breakaway 59 yard touchdown. Mercer, a redshirt freshman, is showing that his ability to contribute already makes it scary to think what the future holds.

Idaho's offense only contributed to one field goal, as their other 7 points came from a botched pitch from Moore to Tim Gay. It's safe to say the Vandals never stood a chance.

Idaho at Texas State

The Bobcats are getting used to being the favorites in these games, and this week is no exception. Idaho is 3-3 with no real impressive wins. Playing at home, it looks to be another blowout in TX State's favor.

Texas State 52, San Jose St. 20

San Jose, CA -- Halfback Terrance Franks left the game early with bruised ribs, but backup Tim Gay filled in well as he pounded the rock for 87 yards and 3 touchdowns. Texas State quarterback Jordan Moore put up 375 yards and threw for 3 touchdowns. As usual, the Bobcats made it look easy once again.

Texas State at San Jose St.

SJSU is 1-2, and have lost to both Navy and Florida Atlantic. It doesn't look like such a touch opponent for the Bobcats. But we are on the road so you know anything can happen.

As we sit during the bye week, it's time to get you caught up on Texas State's recruiting so far this season.

The Bobcats seem to be going aggressive on the defensive side of the ball. Their big targets include 3-star middle linebacker Chad Dorsey (6'2" 239, 68 OVR) from Converse, TX, 3-star strong safety Kellen Freeman (6'3" 189, 69 OVR) from Austin, TX, and 3-star strong safety Eric Welsh (6'0" 196, 68 OVR) from Hillsboro, TX. Running the 4-2-5 defense, it always helps to have good strong safeties.

But the biggest recruit on their board is an athlete. 5-star prospect Jason Mays (5'10" 188, 77 OVR) from Robinson, TX is projected to be a running back. But Mays will be coveted by many and the Bobcats will have done the impossible if they can sign him.

Texas State 56, Army 24

San Marcos, TX -- Jordan Moore had another astronomical game in terms of stats as the Texas State Bobcats defeated the Army Black Knights. He threw for 491 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tight end Bradley Miller finally broke out this season with 115 receiving yards. But the bulk of the touchdowns came on the ground. Terrance Franks had 3 touchdowns and Tim Gay had 2.

"That's one thing about this offense that gets overlooked with all of the gaudy numbers", said Bobcats head coach Dennis Franchione. "When defenses tighten up on our pass game in the red zone, we can just punch it in on the ground."

Army could never really get their run game going, at least not in time for them to be in this game. It's going to be interesting to see if anyone can figure out a way to hang with TX State's offense this season.

Army at Texas State

The Bobcats face another run heavy team this week, and it's going to be an even bigger challenge than last week. Army is 2-0 and have made easy work of their opponents.

Now I know you're thinking "Texas State shut down Navy's triple option, so what's going to be different about Army?" Well, Army is ranked 6th in the nation in rushing and Navy was ranked 26th. Army is averaging nearly 300 yards on the ground versus Navy's 223. So Army is like a pumped up version of what we saw last week. If they can employ a similar game plan to Navy's and put even more pressure on Bobcats quarterback Jordan Moore to score without mistakes, this game could take a turn in Army's favor.

The good news is that, so far, Texas State is not feeling the effects of the loss of graduating players Isaiah Battle and Andy Erickson. They have plugged-and-played Brice Gunter and Demun Mercer fairly seamlessly. I would like to see more production out of tight end Bradley Miller, but I think that will come with time. Maybe this is the week he shows up.

Texas State 35, Navy 14

San Marcos, TX -- It looked like it was going to be a battle of back and forth scoring, but the Bobcat defense stepped up when it counted and put a stop to Navy's vaunted triple option rushing attack. Marcus Dallas Jr., the defensive end, led the defensive charge with 9 tackles, 3 of which were for a loss.

Navy's strategy for this game was fairly sound: win the possession battle and keep Texas State's offense off the field. After running a bit of clock, they scored easily on their first drive, mostly by the running of quarterback Keenan Reynolds. Texas State would quickly match that with a short yardage touchdown by halfback Terrance Franks after a flurry of passes from quarterback Jordan Moore. But Navy was stingy and scored after a long drive again, tying it at 14. Texas State employed the hurry up, but ran out of time before the half.

Getting the ball to start the third quarter, the Bobcats kept with their up tempo pace and scored on another Franks run. They made the right adjustments at halftime, because they stopped Navy's subsequent drive quickly. Giving them the ball back, they drove down until Moore found receiver Demun Mercer in the end zone to make it 28-14 Bobcats. Navy felt the pressure that so many teams have lately against Texas State, and they fumbled the ball in Texas State territory. The Bobcats would score again and seal the win.

Moore was 25/33 with 336 yards and 2 touchdowns. Franks was the player of the game with 3 rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown.
