The Lobos didn’t look like a #8 squad when we played them. We kept the pressure on them and they could never get a rhythm going. Our defensive end Swanson broke the school record for sacks in a season and we weren’t going to be denied being crowned champions of the Mountain West.
Maaco Las Vegas Bowl - UNLV 31, Arizona State 3
I think Arizona State mailed in the rest of their season before they even ran through the tunnel in this bowl game. They were shut down completely by our dynamic duo of Swanson and Blount. Nick Sherry was injured during the game, but with us having the lead already, Troy Hawthorne had no problem stepping in and closing this one out.
This will conclude my reporting on the UNLV dynasty. I can’t put the amount of effort this dynasty deserves for reporting because I’m simply enjoying just playing the games. But I love to write, so I’m making a decision. I’ll continue playing this dynasty, but I will report on a new dynasty. I’ll make a thread in the forums and everything. That way I can take my time with it and play the UNLV dynasty whenever I just want to play the game itself. So I’ll see you in the forums.

UNLV 45, Wyoming 42
This was a fight to the end. I tried to slow the game down, but couldn’t stop Wyoming from scoring. It took some really diligent clock management to finish out the game on top.
UNLV 49, South Alabama 30
We went into Mobile and learned that South Alabama came to play! They were actually ahead of us for a quarter and a half, but our defense finally broke them. We continued the run-heavy style and our pressure forced them to make mistakes and secure our win.
UNLV 35, Hawaii 7
Hawaii was having a really bad year (they finished 1-11) and this was never close. We imposed our will on defense and pounded them on the ground until it was over.
UNLV 35, Nevada 17
Another game that started off tough, but our defensive ends got into a groove early, causing multiple sacks and made this game easy for us.
UNLV 49, Fresno State 3
Another one that was barely a contest. It seemed like the Bulldogs took this game lightly. This time we won through the air instead of on the ground. Nick Sherry threw for over 400 yards, but no touchdowns, lol. We’ll take a blowout any way we can get it.
Boise State 38, UNLV 32
This was more lopsided a loss than the score indicates due to the garbage time points. We were outmatched and out-coached. Chris Peterson devised a scheme that kept 6 defenders in the box at all times, a front we hadn’t seen all year. In turn, the Broncos shut down every run we threw at them. Making us one-dimensional, the pressure on Nick was too great, and he threw 4 interceptions. I benched him for running threat Jared Lebowitz, who was able to lead a triple option attack late in the game. But it wasn’t enough.
UNLV 33, BYU 28
The interceptions continued for Sherry, and he was knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter. This time, junior Troy Hawthorne led us to the end. We recovered an onside kick and scored for the victory.
UNLV 35, Colorado State 17
The Rams started out super strong, and I felt like their quarterback was invincible. But a couple of key stops swayed the momentum in our favor. Our defensive ends Swanson and Blount were the stars of the game like many times before.
UNLV 39, San Diego State 36
The Aztecs were the pride of the West division, with a record of 10-1, and us having a record of 9-2 meant that whoever won this game would go to the Mountain West championship game. It was a tough one too. At one point, we were down 14-0. But we kept to what got us here and pounded away on the ground. First making it 14-7, then imposing our will on defense. And before we knew it, we were ahead. This fight continued until the final whistle, and somehow we were on top.

Our second game was at the Big House, facing #24 Michigan, and it was a different story. The Wolverines tore through us like tin foil and not only took away our passing game, they also stuffed our runs. We finally found our groove in the fourth quarter, but it was too late. We lost 52-42.
Our third game brought us back home to Sam Boyd Stadium to face San Jose State. In our conference opener, we dominated the Spartans 42-14. It wasn’t as easy as it looks, though. Things were just playing out perfectly. We got some really tough stops early on that kept the momentum on our side. The bad news is, we lost our two starting linebackers Iggy Porchia and Tau Lotuleilei for one and three weeks, respectively. We also lost our backup halfback, Niko Kapeli, for seven weeks.
Next up is Wyoming. This is usually a spread passing team, so the plan is to get some pressure from the ends. If they mix in the run well, we may have our work cut out for us.
This is becoming my most favorite dynasty of my NCAA ‘14 days because I’m finally using the house rules that keep this game challenging. Before, I would only implement one house rule or only use a tough set of sliders while going all out on everything else. This time, I’m using everything I know and adding more as needed. And I’m enjoying the realism of being a Group of Five school with little to no chance of contending for that Natty.
Aside from playing on Heisman, Fatigue OFF, no skill trees, and injury ratings lowered significantly, I’ve banned all zone read option plays. I can still use the triple option because it adds an element of chance with the pitch, and it’s not as overpowered. That is subject to change as time goes on.
I’ve also added the rule that if my quarterback is below 80 in AWR, I must use a stock offensive playbook and the accompanying basic concepts from it, with no tweaks (aka hot routes that transform the play to my advantage). Right now my best QB is Nick Sherry with 74 AWR, and he must use the concepts from my Houston (Air Raid) playbook which are stick, shallow cross, Y cross, Y corner, mesh, and accompanying run plays.
As time goes on, depending on the awareness of the personnel, I am planning to create playbooks based on skill sets. Omitting plays that aren’t realistic to my players’ abilities and adding plays if I land a stud quarterback, for instance. I think this adds to the fun.

I’m taking over a Rebels team that went 2-10 the previous year, and is similarly rated to the current Georgia State lineup. So it’s not an upgrade per se, but I have ties to Vegas and this felt like a great fit.
I’m still not impressed with my 4-2-5 efforts, and UNLV doesn’t have good strong safety type players anyway, so I’ve switched to the 4-3. The Under front is good against the run, and the overall alignments do well in man and zone coverage.
So with this, I’m recruiting pass rushing defensive ends and fast linebackers. So as you can see, my main concern for this team is to even out my squad.

As far as defense is concerned, I’ve given this side of the ball a pass for too long. Yes, the personnel is crap, but I can put more effort into this. I’m going to evaluate the roster on a position-by-position basis and determine where to make the switch. I’m currently in a 3-4 defense, but if I find that my team is better suited for another scheme, I’ll make the switch.
Next up for us is South Alabama. This looks to be the most winnable game I’ve had since the FCS teams. If we don’t win, that puts us at 3-9 and in jeopardy for our jobs.

In the past few dynasties I’ve started, there has always been something I didn’t like about it. My NCAA ‘12 had the absence of a true spread offense and running from shotgun. My Texas State dynasty was too easy to build because of the Texas pipeline. The Idaho dynasty was the best to date, but I was having trouble trying to connect with it for some reason. Ideally, I wanted to start in the 2013 season and build from the more natural-rated rosters. Not to mention, I’ve realized why I’ve quit reporting dynasties. It’s kind of a grind to think of fresh content in articles. They all started to sound the same.
I’ve started a new dynasty with Georgia State. I lowered the injury ratings to get a good rotation going and supplement the lack of auto subs that Fatigue OFF creates. This rated GSU at 57/60/57. I’m going to use this blog just to keep track of the dynasty as a whole.
As of now: GSU is 3-5 with two wins against FCS opponents and a surprise upset of ULM in my past game.

Florida Atlantic was finally beaten as they fell to New Mexico State, 21-19.
Texas fell to TCU 28-14 to end the Longhorns' undefeated streak.

Too Tough For The Vandals
Ole Miss puts up 302 rushing yards in their 42-24 win over Idaho

Oxford, MS -- The Mississippi Rebels were just too much for the Idaho Vandals to handle on Saturday. Employing a ground attack, Ole Miss drove up and down the field at will on the Vandals. Rebels quarterback Grant Tisdale ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns, and running back Scottie Phillips had an even better day with 195 yards and two touchdowns.
"We compounded the disparity by turning the ball over", said Idaho head coach Buddy Lee when asked about quarterback Mason Petrino's 3 interceptions. "They were playing our run and shutting us down so we had to try our hand at passing again, but it made things worse."
Idaho did manage to make it a ballgame by the third quarter when running back Dylan Thigpen found his groove and got the Vandals within 14. But their defense couldn't stop Ole Miss to keep it close.
"We're learning more and more each week”, said Lee. “3-5 isn't a good look no matter how you slice it, but we're finding out what works and not giving up on the games."
Idaho (3-5) faces Wyoming (3-4) in Laramie next week.
#1 Clemson stuck it to the doubters as they dominated #3 Florida State, 35-7.
Florida Atlantic (6-0) climbs to #3 after beating North Texas 42-16.
Alabama lost again, this time to Arkansas 35-21.
Nebraska has climbed to #6 as they are undefeated at 7-0.
Lloyd Hightower returns his first of two interceptions for touchdowns on Saturday.
Vandals Hold On Again
Idaho beats Arkansas State in Overtime, 49-42

Jonesboro, AR -- These were two teams with losing records and it was as evenly matched as advertised.
Both Idaho and Arkansas State came out swinging, but it was the Red Wolf offense that was more aggressive. Each time Idaho scored, Arkansas State answered right back. And it was truly a battle of the running backs. Junior running back Dylan Thigpen had 230 yards for the Vandals and sophomore running back Marcel Murray had 173 for the Red Wolves. The lucky charm in the Vandals day was senior cornerback Lloyd Hightower who, after both times Idaho needed to punt the ball away, returned two interceptions for touchdowns.
"They played as tough as anyone we've faced", said Vandals head coach Buddy Lee. "If it weren't for Lloyd tonight, we definitely would've lost."
Hightower has three interceptions on the season and is leading Idaho in turnovers.
"We were in a Cover 2 and had the flats covered", said Hightower. "I love seeing them try to go to the flats when I'm there."
The Vandals were ahead by 7 at the end the fourth quarter, but Arkansas wasn't going to let that be the end of the game. Bonner drove the Wolves down the field with less than a minute left and he eventually ran it in for the TD. Idaho got the ball first in Overtime. Again, riding on the back of Thigpen, Idaho went to the ground every play until he scored. Arkansas State tried to throw it into the end zone on fourth down, but Hightower was there again to knock the ball down, securing the Vandals victory.
Idaho (3-4) plays Ole Miss next week. Another big challenge in a brutal schedule for the Vandals.
