Royals Add To Bullpen With Pair Of Signings

The Kansas City Royals have decided that they needed to add a couple of arms to their bullpen. The Royals signed 31-year old closer Brian Wilson and and 35-year old closer Jose Valverde to contract yesterday afternoon.

Wilson pitched in only two games last season after coming back from Tommy John Surgery with the San Francisco Giants and recorded one save in two innings pitched. The former Giants closer was a fan favorite in San Francisco due to his famous beard. The Giants closer is a very effective right handed closer when he is healthy as shown in 2011 when he saved 36 games out of 41 opportunities for the Giants.

Valverde, 35, spent last season with the Detroit Tigers and converted 35 of 40 save opportunities for the Tigers last year who were swept in the World Series by the San Francisco Giants. The Tigers opted not to resigned the hard throwing righthander because they had up and coming closer Bruce Rondon waiting in the minors for them. Valverde has a career 3.19 ERA and 1.18 WHIP.

Both pitchers have been assigned to Triple-A to get into shape before they make any appearances for the Kansas City Royals.

Could R.A. Dickey's Time In Toronto Be Coming To An End?

The man who won the National League Cy Young Award last season could be seeing his time in Toronto be coming to an end. 38-year old knuckleballer R.A. Dickey was acquired from the New York Mets in exchange for top catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud and highly touted pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard. The opening day starter for the Toronto Blue Jays this season seems to have lost whatever he had during his miracle season last season. Some may say that he is not up to the daunting challenge of facing American League hitters or the fact that Dickey no longer gets a "free" out when the pitcher comes up to bat.

Whatever it is, Dickey has absolutely not lived up to the hype and value that he was traded to the Blue Jays for. Dickey has yet to bring his ERA below 6.00. The problem with the Blue Jays trading him is that his trade value is superbly low because of the numbers (or lack of) that he has put up for the Blue Jays this season. Don't be surprised if Dickey is moved as part of a deal at or around the trade deadline this season.
