The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the Chargers have made a final offer to RB LaDainian Tomlinson on a restructured contract. The ball is now in his court in terms of whether he wants to remain with the team or move on.
While nothing concrete has been reported, rumors swirling around the situation suggest that Tomlinson will not be back with the Bolts in 2009.
That decision would create a domino effect of sorts in the world of fantasy football.
Tomlinson, one of the best running backs to ever grace the gridiron, could join Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson, Tony Dorsett, O.J. Simpson and Emmitt Smith on the list of great runners to finish their careers with different teams. In most cases, those backs experienced a decrease in statistical success.
Fantasy leaguers who owned Tomlinson in 2008 saw that the wear and tear of eight years and close to 2,700 regular-season carries had started to take its toll. His 1,110 rushing yards were a career low, and his 3.8 yards-per-carry average and 12 total touchdowns were his worse totals since his rookie season.
Tomlinson will have several suitors if he decides to leave San Diego, maybe none more prominent than the New Orleans Saints.
In fact, former teammate and current Saints quarterback Drew Brees told XX 1090 AM in San Diego that he would �love� to have Tomlinson as a teammate once again.
Such a scenario would have an enormous affect on the value of several players other than Tomlinson, a list that includes RBs Reggie Bush, Darren Sproles and Pierre Thomas. It would also almost guarantee that the Chargers will take a running back in the first round of the NFL Draft.
Whatever happens, this is a situation that fantasy leaguers need to watch in the weeks to come.
