Do Rings Make a QB
Posted on June 26, 2011 at 06:08 AM.
Me and a friend were talking football last night and of course the QBs of the nfl past and present came up. Questions like Who was better then who and why were they came up and answers, well opinions were given.

we started with the present and the top dogs to me are Tom Brady, Aaron Rogers ,Payton Manning ,Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Vick. ok may be not mike vick or big ben instead drew brees and philip rivers. the crazy thing is, even though big ben has two to drew brees's one and philip's none. these goes are better at being a QB.... right? all around football player is a different question. now look at Tom Brady and Payton Manning whos better thats still the Question right, but you tell me who has more rings. should it even be a question whos better.

moving on to the past. in my eyes Dan Marino was the man (dan the man) and for the most part dan is not in peoples top 5 he is hanging on in the top 10 even though he may be still to this day, the best pure passer ever. 61000 plus YRDs 420 TDs and he wont be in most peoples top 5 of all time. the crazy thing is Terry Bradshaw who has four rings wont be in the top 5 or 10 of all time(In my eyes ok most peoples eyes).

there have been along line of good and great QBs that are still playing and who have long retired. so can we look at them as a whole meaning their whole careers. steve young has 1 super bowl ring that counts (he was the starter in super bowl 29). he has three all together but his first two joe montana won. troy aikman has three that he won as the starter but his career numbers are not as good as youngs. youngs TDs 232 and 107 INTs troy 165 TDs 141 INTs dont forget young could run.... my vikings fans(lol). As far as the QB rating, young has troy beat there too. from 1991 -1999 as the starting QB for the 49ers young had a QB rating of 100 plus 5 times. his highest at 112.8 troy highest 99 not once over 100. Steve is better right even though its 1 to 3 in rings favoring troy.

i love my 49ers so its young for me... you agree right? (lol) but anyways you tell me who are the top QBs of all time and of present day and do or should rings really mean that much.

I honestly think that the best quarterbacks are the ones who can lead their offense to dominance over opposing defenses. They must be able to inspire the offense to do better and must have the ability to set plays in tough situations. Their is no doubt that Qb's such as Manning, Brady, and other legends are able to do this. To me, rings shouldnt matter. Have you ever heard that "defense wins championships"? No matter how much the Qb throws, if his team cant stop the other Qb from throwing as well, then its a lost cause.

thats how i feel. football is the ultimate team sports most of the time it is up to the "D" to get a big stop to end the game.

Rings dont matter. What makes a quarterback or any player "great" is how they preform when most need in big spots add that with consistancy and elevating others and to me thays how you decipher whos great. Trent Dilfer-ring Dan Marino-none but you couldnt even put Dilfer in a quarterback conversation without being laughed at and rediculed. Doing great things makes you great.

Rings dont make a QB, but they help make a HOF career

I always find it funny how on almost every talk show in which NFL QB's are discussed that it is mentioned that if a QB doesnt win a ring that their legacy is shot. It is ridiculous to think that guys like Tarkenton, Marino, Fouts, Esiason, Jaworski (to name a few) should have their careers viewed as failures because they didnt win a championship.

These types of conversations go on way too much in sports these days. Same with LeBron. Not a huge fan but when it is all said and done his career numbers should be with all the elite players and if something happens the teams he plays for dont win a title his career shouldnt be tarnished.

Rings do not make a legendary quarterback. Dan Marino and Jim Kelly should prove that point, far more legendary than Trend Dilfer or Eli Manning will ever be. I like others believe that rings are more a HoF helper than a determining factor on ones greatness. To be great you need to get the most out of what you have against the best teams you play.
