running backs (dead man walking)
Posted on May 27, 2011 at 03:57 AM.
The NFL Draft was about a mounth ago and there was only one running back taken in the first round. that would be 2009 heisman winner mark ingram who was taking by the new orleans saint. it seems to me that the nfl is so pass happy that the days of a dominate one back runnig game is done..... ok not done but dying.

three out of the 12 playoff teams had a one back running game. the steelers, falcons and maybe the bears(ok not really the bears). i know that the 49ers have frank gore, the titans have chris johnson, the rams have steven jackson, and the vikings have adrian peterson. the texans and browns both had stand out running backs in 2010 but in 2010 peyton hillis, and adrian foster. i believe that they will both have running mates in 2011. ben tate for the texans and montario hardesty for the browns. they both were drafted to be the main guy but do to injury that didnt happen. the Question is will there be another 25-30 carry a game back in the NFL like when the dolphins had a true work horse ricky williams in his prime from 2002-2005?

As they say; running backs are a dime a dozen.
It kinda sucks though, as you need a good run scheme/game to open up the pass game, and yet you probably wont see a running back go in the first round ever again; until some team, puts together a monster backfield and smashs their way into winning a SuperBowl, and then the league will copycat their personnel and game plan. As we all know as well, that it is a CopyCat league.
cheers
Kudos to you xITSxDAWKINSx; and lets just cross some more T's, and dot a couple more I's next time! And i mean next time! lol -jokes

We won't see a running back go in the first round ever again? Way to be completely outrageous.

I mean, if the guys projected to go in the first in 2012 right now end up going in the first we could see between 3 and 4 running backs go in the opening round.

Trent Richardson, Knile Davis, LaMichael James, and Cyrus Gray all have great chances being drafted first round.

You gotta be kidding me...smh.

Anyways I agree with you Dawkins. And platoon backfields are becoming much more prevalent throughout the NFL. However, RB's in fact, are becoming more important as they are required to be able to pass block, run routes, and sometimes even throw the ball.

Why aren't the Packers listed as a playoff team with a one back running game? Starks had 81 of 94 running back carries in the playoffs. The previous three years in the regular season Ryan Grant got 85% ot the carries. Mike McCarthy has demonstrated he is a big believer in using 1 back for majority of the carries.

Lendale White let himself go. Sort of a JaMarcus Russell situation. Couple that with Chris Johnson's breakout CJ2K season and he's out of the league.

It's about 2 things:
(1) Lack of elite RBs in the 2011 draft
(2) Limiting risk.

The runningback-by-committee approach keeps the wear and tear down on the individual backs thereby limiting the risk of injury. It gets even more specialized with 3rd down/pass receiving backs.

I think you're reading too much into a small sample pool if you're just looking at the 2011 draft class.
