The new Video Game Basketball season is Upon us. We have out One Good game in Live and one great game in 2K. I myself was very excited for this period because i love basketball and i love basketball video games.
So let me just get right to it. Enough with the opening monologue stuff. In 2k i enjoy the Myteam mode and i Visit MyCareer from time to time. Especially this year, because Spike Lee wrote and Directed the footage.
Let me say this, I am not surprised but very dissapointed in the way both modes were constructed. Its all because of that elephant in the room with 2k called VC. Now look, i know they are in this to make money, but to force or trick people into buying their currency is just wrong. I bought madden this year. First time in a while i enjoyed a madden game. one of the reasons i enjoy it is because there are tons of offline content, that pay well and represent all difficulty and skill levels. The madden journey mode has 100s of challenges alone. Also in madden they reward you nicely. enough so that you can catch up rather quick if you grind out and play through the challenges. They dont force you to buy packs. You know why? Because they know that we will buy packs anyway. No one wants bronze and silver teams. The kids and adults alike want the best players. But your hand is never forced in madden.
Now back to 2K, Lets start in Mycareer. You start out as a high school fenom from NYC. No matter what your skin tone you will be in a black family. lol For me that is no issue for I am black. For everyone else who plays the game i think their heads are turned sideways. Come on 2k. you could not change model skins and do some voice overs? If not at least have made that mode a premade character.
Now you start out really low level. Since he is the Phenom and in HS he is destroying the competition. The same with his college run. They tell you, "Son you can go first in the draft!!". So some would assume, since they average about 15-20+ a game, I am a lock for the one spot. Nope. What is hidden, is you have to damn near max out your character with VC to get that number one spot. Yep. So your play in school seems to have little effect on your spot. Your wallet does.
Now lets move over to MyTeam. Once again its nice on the outside. It really caters to the online players in this model. Not much to do offline. Which is kind of a joke because i think this mode cannot be played offline at all. This year you have the gauntlet which is online, the challenges and RTTP are also online. That really kicked me in the ribs. challenge mode as much of a pain as it was, I really enjoyed because i openend many packs and could play it at my own pace. After i Played the first game, I went to play the second and it said looking for opponent? I said aw hell no. There was nowhere in the instructions that it would be online. Is that what those little people mean? Once again confusing insturctions from 2k.
Now i go to domination. The only full offline Myteam mode? Last year it was great. It was challenging at times depending on your lineup but always manageable. This year, Its brutally challenging. Forcing players to open packs Just to be able to scrape by a win. I am only up to the celtics because i dont play it much because of how sweaty and stressful it is. They have the sliders so dialed up that its very hard to win. Like i said a line or 2 up forcing you to buy VC. FORCING YOU!
Why do you need to force people to open packs? Much like any sports game, FIFA, NHL, MADDEN, MLB THE SHOW. We all want the best players so we will open packs. You do not have to make the game so hard that you force folks to do so. You dont need to mis-lead to do so. I thought you guys cut the cheese.
Now with that said the game itself is perfect. I play quick games where you are not forced to use DEV sliders. GM,League ect. All fine modes. But the two main ones..
You guys made the best Basketball game on planet Earth and you also made the most souless Basketball game on planet Earth.

I also hate the way the VC is controlling your progression in many modes....the gameplay is great and its an awesome game, but why are they doing this to their fans is beyond me...65.00x over millions and millions of sales is a lot of money I know it cost a lot to do what they do, but most of us gamers aren't rich or are kids - there has to be a medium somewhere..do some skills to unlock things...game play rewards drop 50 points and unlock a certain sneaker pack something achievement wise would be a good idea.

I thought you earn vc's for every game you play. and those vc's can be applied to upgrades.technically you dont have to spend money, you just have to spend tons of time on the game.
I personally dont mind earning the vc's
but then again I dont play online

I couldn't agree more with the opening post.
Why would I need to have to pay for VC in order to play half the game modes, when I've already paid a premium price for the game?

I'm with tril, buying vc is an option but it is no way a requirement. The people that do decide to pay for VC end up with an edge over those that don't but personally I'd rather earn the credit the old fashion way than to fork over extra cash for in game currency. If it takes me awhile to earn and level up so be it but it's better than paying real money to get ahead.
And lets not forget that throughout the year 2k will release locker codes to earn free VC.

I think I have theory on why VC is still so prominent in the game.
Michael Jordan.
It has been stated that Michael Jordan doesn't do deals for less than 10 million. So we must assume that MJ must have a 10 million with 2K in order to use his likeness, which probably also the reason why NBA Live doesn't have him in the game.
Of course I have no proof of this other than speculation based on his own statement, but it would make sense if it played a part in this.
