Good news has arrived from Cambria College in respect to their football team. Today, the Miners have hired Mike Leach as their new offensive coordinator, and have also hired Bob Davie as their new defensive coordinator. Jeremy Wilson met with both coaches on Thursday and it took him only a few days to decide they are the right fit for the program, as the school moves up to Division I. Wilson commented on the resume of both coaches: “Both Mike and Bob bring a high level of commitment, expertise, and class to their new respective positions and should have a positive influence in Cambria’s move to Division I.”

Coach Wilson especially connected with Mike Leach as both are offensive masterminds and known for their spread schemes. Leach the former head coach of Texas Tech, brought his Air Raid offense to the national spotlight there and turned Texas Tech into a legitimate Big XII contender, as he had a 76-39 record at Tech. Wilson believes there is a lot to learn from Leach and expects him to command the offense to great heights given his knowledge and the offensive unit’s talent: “Coach Leach understands the spread and Air Raid offense we like to run here better than anybody, and with the skill and speed we have on offense, Coach Leach should have a field day every Saturday commanding this offense.” Also Wilson is in awe of Leach’s ability to successfully tutor quarterback s as evidenced from his time at Kentucky and Oklahoma as the offensive coordinator, and from his tenure at Texas Tech. Cambria’s starting quarterback, Joe Dimigglio set several Division III single season passing records last year, and the strong-armed and accurate signal caller has high hopes for the team’s first Division I campaign: “Were happy to be playing in Division I, but by no means is this going to be a honeymoon year. We understand there are some critics who have no clue why we are in Division I, and some people flat out have never heard of our college or knew that we had a football team. But that will change by season’s end.” Hopefully, Leach can bring Dimigglio along further in his development, and the team can prove their naysayers wrong.

Bob Davie, the former head coach of Notre Dame is well-known for his time at Texas A&M during the early 90’s when he coached the “Wrecking Crew” to national prominence. Wilson hopes he Davie’s can turn around a defense that was suspect to deep pass plays and had trouble stopping the run last season against far inferior opponents than they will face in Division I. Wilson said the unit needs to take a more team-based approach to defense, and thinks Davie can help them accomplish that: “When you look at Davie’s resume, you see a coach who has taken individuals and made them into a collective force on the defensive side of the ball. Last year, our defense didn’t play up to its potential because everyone was trying to individually make a difference rather than play the defensive scheme which calls for teamwork.” Garret Olsen, the Cambria’s star middle linebacker and defensive captain agrees with Coach Wilson’s assessment of the unit’s lack of teamwork last season: “Last season, we were out of position because everyone was trying to make that impact play. We need to learn that in order to make impact plays, we have to follow the schemes to a fault, and that a big play is not the result of an individual, rather it’s the result of the team.”

Both Davie and Leach will have a news conference in the upcoming days. Although, Wilson is not sure the new hires will be able to have their units dominate statistically the first year, he is sure the new hires bring instant legitimacy and credibility to Cambria’s football program.
