Madden Tackling, All Over Again

This hit cost Brandon Meriweather $50k, and probably should have cost him time in the "sin bin" had the NFL's new safety policies been enforced before week 6. A series of brutal attacks in a year in which around 75% of the league seems to have had a concussion is really changing opinion over brutal head injuries that can be preventable. "Madden" is a video game that is basically censored by the NFL (every tackling animation is approved by the commissioner's office, and things like helmets flying off, that were in Madden 08, have since been removed.

Theoretically, there should be no "helmet to helmet" style collision in Madden, but every once in a while I see it. For instance, recently I played a game in which I was kicking off, and tried tackling the returner with the hit stick. I hit down, aiming towards hit waist. However, I got a massive, camera shaking hit, and on replay, it looked like a darn strong illegal helmet hit that would have cost my player a personal foul penalty, money in the three digits, and maybe even a suspension. Instead, nothing took place. In fact, that camera shake was almost glorifying my accidental hit, which I was not intending and even attempting to do the opposite of with the hit stick.

EA and the NFL is going to have to make some decisions about this. Do they remove helmet to helmet hits once and for all? Do they remove the camera shake? Do they even toy around with modifying the idea of the hit stick? Or, do they go the other way, and have an occasional hit like this in the game which results in a penalty, and, in franchise mode, a suspension?

That's not the hit that got him fined and in trouble mostly. It was the one where Heap didn't even have the ball and he hit him late and helmet to helmet.
