Friday Night NCAA 09 Lights
Posted on January 23, 2009 at 02:56 PM.

It's no secret -- I'm a fan of the Friday Night Lights television show.

And NCAA 09 is my game of choice.

Chances are good you are with me on at least one of those 2 statements.

So with this-- I took my first foray into the Create-A-Prospect realm entering my third year of my C-USA dynasty (Memphis) by creating as close of approximations of the following characters on FNL and entering them into the prospect pool.

Please remember -- I'm not in the DirecTV elite, so NO SPOILERS please.

The incoming Freshmen:

Matt Saracen, QB (Balanced) • Abilene, TX
5' 9" • 175lbs
(**)
He's short and slow, with a weak arm and questionable leadership abilities. High 80's in AWR, TAC, INJ, and STA keep him in the game. But low marks in STR, JUK, and SPD may keep him out of playing college ball in the SEC.

Top Schools: *
Potential: Perennial Division I Backup or Division II-A starter
Bonus: Mid 70's RTE and CTH
Tim Riggins, FB (Balanced) • Abilene, TX
6' 1" • 220lbs
(*****)
Maybe his ratings were ever-so-slightly man-crush boosted, but sticking with what was available and the knowledge that Tim Riggins was: 1) The star player in the Texas State Championship as a Freshman (or Sophomore, depending on your version of revisionist history); 2) As a Senior switched to HB to run the same plays as unanimous blue-chipper Brian "Smash" Williams had the year before; and 3) Has the body shape, football knowledge and drinking habits of a professional -- then Tim Riggins stands head and shoulders above most 18-19 year old prospects and deserves his Elite 100 status. AWR drops into the low 70's to reflect poor classroom performance, but BCV, CTH, CAR, and all blocking attributes are high 80's/90. Remember, he's fast and powerful, but selfless: he actually prefers to block for his star back and QB1.

Top Schools: *
Potential: Freshman All-American / Future Stud / Rehab Center All-Star
Bonus: A FB with an extended neck brace!
Landry Clarke, WR (Possession) • Abilene, TX
5' 11" • 185lbs
(**)
There's only a couple episodes where Landry even makes the field for coach Taylor's Panthers -- but high impact and pressure situations they were! Landry falls back with 60's in all the "skill" categories other than CTH, but tops out the AWR and Play Recognition scales at 99 and 95, respectively. Other categories positively affected: ZNE, RTE, and Pursuit. Remember -- sure, dude's a brainiac, but he's also a killer. Literally.

Top Schools: *
Potential: Red Shirt Freshman / Possession Receiver
Bonus: High Socks.
and these JUCO Sophomores:

Brian Smash WIlliams, HB (Balanced) • Abilene, TX (JUCO)
6' 0" • 205lbs
(****)
After peaking in the top 5 atop the recruit board as an incoming freshman (with solid recruiting from 'Bama, TEX, and all other SEC schools and a hard commit to "TMU"), "Smash" lost his scholarship to even his "Plan B," a Div II-A black college, with a torn MCL in the State Playoffs as a Senior. A full year of rehab with Coach Taylor and a lost year of eligibility may have kept Brian in the Elite 100 (just barely), because with ACC, JUK and ELU at 85+, a SPD rating of 80 is forgivable. Remember: You don't have to run that fast from a tackler lying face first on the ground.

Top Schools: *
Potential: Red Shirt Freshman / 3rd Down Back
Bonus: 90 CTH rating plus the above gives Williams tremendous value in the flat.
Ray Voodoo Tatum, QB (Balanced) • Austin, TX (JUCO)
6' 3" • 215lbs
(*****)
An afterthought -- I remembered VooDoo's transfer in season 1 and his reemergence as a star on a rival team in Season 2. Keeping things as level as possible, changing Tatum to the ATH position crossed my mind, but either way, Tatum as a Sophomore stands atop the Elite 100 and the recruit board, checking in at number 1 with a bullet. TAK and TPW are hi 80's, SPD and ELU the same . . . Tatum's a powerhouse -- able to run an option program and a spread offense with equal ease.

Top Schools: *
Potential: All-American / Record Breaker
Bonus: With only 2 years before he's eligible for the draft, can a program grab a Championship before Tatum sails?
So no Jason Street (he's um, a paralegal or something like that), and J.D. McCoy is a Freshman to Matt Saracen's being a Senior, so we'll wait a year or 2 til he's in the mix.

Go figure, Memphis shows up on none of the created players' radars . . . and I can't say they fit my team to tell the truth.

*I don't remember the player's respective TOP SCHOOLS right now, so I'll fill those in once I check.
