WEEK 12: THE EFFECT OF THE BYE WEEK?
AFC NORTH
The Steelers are still on pace to win the AFC North after winning 4 straight to go to 9-2, two games ahead of Cincinnati (7-4). Baltimore is still chasing a playoff spot with 6 wins and 5 losses so far but the Cleveland Browns have gone from 4-4 and relevant to 4-8 and pretty much out of it.
AFC SOUTH
The Houston Texans are 2-1 in their last three games and are still on top of the AFC South with a 7-4 record. Tennessee have done the opposite, going 1-3 over their last four games to fall to 5-7 and two games behind the Texans. Jacksonville (4-7) and Indy (3-8) are falling behind, the latter having already gotten rid of head coach Chuck Pagano and pretty much given up on the season.
AFC EAST
In the AFC East the Miami Dolphins were 6-1 before their week 8 bye week and looked like a legitimate playoff contender for the AFC East division title. But their return in week 9 ended in a 32-37 loss at home to the 3-8 Jets which set off a 4 game losing streak which have them at 6-5 before the final 5 games. With Buffalo going strong even without LeSean McCoy, currently sitting at 9-2, the division title and playoffs are quickly disappearing.
AFC WEST
The Broncos are still going strong on top of the AFC West with an 8-3 record but the Kansas City Chiefs are closing the gap and are now just 1 win behind Denver. Denver has also lost Trevor Siemian for the next 4 weeks which gives Kansas City an excellent opportunity to overtake them. The Chargers are 4-7 and might still have a slight hope of making the playoffs while the Raiders are 2-9.
NFC NORTH
Green Bay were 1-2 when they headed into their week 4 bye week, a shaky start that was quickly corrected and the Packers have since gone 7-1 to close the gap to Minnesota (9-2) who are no longer perfect. For the Detroit Lions (4-6-1) and the Chicago Bears (4-7) the season seems to be over already.
NFC SOUTH
The NFC South, were every team had 4 wins after week 8, is starting to separate the best from the worst with Carolina and Atlanta taking control of the division with 6-5 records while Tampa Bay (5-6) and New Orleans (4-7) are falling behind but still not out of the hunt.
NFC EAST
Dallas headed into their bye week on top of the NFC East with a 5-1 record but have since gone 1-4 under rookie QB Dak Prescott. He set the bar high for himself and has failed to deliver, especially in the last three games where Tony Romo has gotten a few snaps as well and after the rookie threw 4 (!) interceptions against Washington, Dak Prescott might need some time on the sidelines to get his confidence back. This has allowed the whole division to catch up with Philaldelphia, Washington and New York Giants all tied at 5-6.
NFC WEST
The 49ers were dreaming of getting back to the playoffs with Tom Brady under center but after a 1-6 start, most were ready to pull the plug on the Brady project as the team headed into their bye week. A week off might have been exactly what the 49ers needed as theyve come out swinging after the break, winning 4 straight and scoring 30+ points in each game. They're still tied at the bottom of the division with a 5-6 record but the NFC West is tightening up. The L.A. Rams have seen the 49ers 4 game winning streak and copied it to keep themselves a win and a draw ahead of San Francisco. There seems to be no stopping the Seahawks however who are 9-2 and are only a couple of wins away from the division title.

CHUCK PAGANO DONE IN INDY AFTER JUST 3 WINS IN 11
Despite the best QB in the division and this being his fifth season to build a good team in Indy, Jim Irsay's patience with head coach Chuck Pagano finally ran out and the 57 year old was released from his coaching duties today.
Defensive coordinator Ted Monachino will take over for the remaining 5 games. It has been reported that Stanley Seraffian who's entering the NFL next season with a team of his own has already approached Chuck Pagano in their hunt for a head coach.
STANLEY SERAFFIAN DELIVERS AND THE SAN ANTONIANS RESPOND
A poll has been held in San Antonio to decide the name of their expansion franchise. Some media experts were critical of the initiative, saying it had been done to death and viewed it more as a marketing strategy to sell tickets than an initiative to unite fans. The San Antonians though seemed to embrace the initiative.
And the main reason for the positive respons was that this wasn't just an online poll which seems like the laziest way to generate some interest in your team. Instead, owner Stanley Seraffian showed up at the Alamodome on Saturday to hold the poll in the hours leading up to the UTSA Roadrunners' NCAA home game. He didn't just show up but did so with the largest tailgate party seen in San Antonio with free barbecue food, a number of football related contests for all ages with UTSA fan gear as prizes and a local band on stage. People showed up in numbers, even people who didn't have a ticket for the game, and took part in the festivities and, more importantly, the poll. And in the midst of the crowd was a casually dressed NFL owner sporting a UTSA jersey with the number "17" on it (probably in reference to his own franchise starting play in 2017), shaking hands, talking to people about football, answering questions about his new franchise and even taking part in some of the contests. He showed off a pretty decent throwing arm too although he didn't win any of the competitions.
"We've received such a warm welcome down here," Seraffian said when asked about today's events.
"And we want to show the San Antonians that we are truly grateful for that and we want to give something back. Plus it's a great chance for me to meet the "San Antonio football family" that we hope to be a part of and it's wonderful to see people come out to support the Roadrunners and participate in this vote. I mean, who better than the San Antonians to find the perfect name for their team?"
The voting closed as soon as the game kicked off and was announced at half time. Stanely Seraffian, who many people have already embraced, was a popular man when he strode onto the field in his Roadrunners jersey and announcing both the name of the franchise and five people who had voted who would receive two season tickets each to next season's NFL games.
But more importantly to most was to learn that as of the 2017 season, their home town NFL franchise will be called the San Antonio Express.

Trades
One trade was done before the trade deadline. Tampa Bay sent DT Akeem Spence to Washington for their 2017 4th and 7th round picks.
Standings
AFC NORTH
The Steelers are top of the AFC North with 5 wins and 2 losses so far, but the North is tight so far with the remaining three teams all on 4 wins, Baltimore with a 4-3 record followed by Cleveland and Cincinnati at 4-4.
Hey Cleveland, You're relevant!
AFC SOUTH
Houston lead by a stellar defense are top of the AFC South. They paid Brock Osweiler a lot of money to be their QB and so far he's doing just enough to win games and keep Houston a game ahead of Tennessee (4-4). Jacksonville are 3-4 while the team with arguably the best QB in the division are bottom with only 2 wins from 8 games.
AFC EAST
Buffalo just lost LeSean McCoy and have to fill the gap as the Dolphins have looked impressive during their 6 game winning streak to keep up with Buffalo's 7-1 start. Their only loss came to the Dolphins who are on their bye week, hoping to keep the momentum when they return. Someone who desperately needs a bye week are the Jets who are 1-7 at the midway point of the season and seem to be out of the playoff race already.
AFC WEST
The Broncos front office has been criticized for trading away draft picks for not the most exciting players in the league, but what they've brought in seem to at least have a positive impact as the Denver Broncos are 6-2 so far with a slightly underwhelming Trevor Siemian at QB. His backup and 1st round pick Paxton Lynch have gotten a few snaps but has failed to impress anyone. Closely behind are the Kansas City Chiefs with a 4-3 record so far while Oakland (2-6) and San Diego (1-7) are failing to live up to expectations.
NFC NORTH Whatever the Vikings are doing, it's working
The Vikings look like a team that hasn't quite figured out who their starting QB is yet; several minor injuries have kept the three QB's on the Vikings roster in rotation with Sam Bradford getting the majority of starts. The Vikings are 30th in the NFL in passing yards and yet they are the only perfect team left in the league, sitting at 7-0.
Adrian Peterson leads the league in rushing and is on track for another 2K season and the Vikings are 2nd in the league in points per game. Their defense is good, although not top of the league in any category.
It's not a matter of one single factor that puts the Vikings on top of the NFL. Instead, I think we've got ourselves a team here! And a darn good one at that.
In pursuit of the Vikings are the Green Bay Packers (4-3) but something doesn't seem right with coach McCarthy's team, currently behind the Detroit Lions (4-3-1), who were missing starting QB Matthew Stafford for the first few games of the season, and are already 3 games behind Minnesota. At the bottom, the Chicago Bears are not getting their money's worth from Jay Cutler who's on a $15M a year contract and maybe they were trying to send a signal to the 33 year old by resigning Brian Hoyer a few weeks ago. 2 wins from 8 so far and not a lot of happy people in Chicago.
NFC SOUTH
Who is the best team in the NFC South? No one seems to know as all four teams have recorded 4 wins each so far. Tiebreakers have Carolina on top followed by the Saints and Bucs (all at 4-3) while the Falcons, who made a trade in preseason and claimed they were Super Bowl bound, are currently bottom with a 4-4 record.
NFC EAST
Rookie QB Dak Prescott are keeping the Cowboys (5-2) on top of the NFC East with Romo out injured, one game ahead of the New York Giants (4-3). Philadelphia and Washington have three wins each so far which is ok for an Eagles team with lots of young pieces and a rookie QB but they can't be happy with just three wins in Washington, having made trades in the offseason to make them at least a playoff team.
NFC WEST
Winning with Bill Belichick was certainly easier than winning with Chip Kelly, something Tom Brady is currently experiencing in San Francisco. His dream of playing for his childhood team is turning into a nightmare as the 49ers are bottom of the West with a 1-6 record. The LA Rams aren't doing much better with former Patriot Jimmy Garoppolo who has only lead the Rams to a 2-4-1 record. The Seahawks seem to be the best team in the West with a 6-1 record, two games behind the 4-4 Arizona Cardinals.

SEASON OVER FOR BILLS STAR HB
Both the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins are having themselves a great season so far and it's not just because the Patriots are no longer in the division. The Bills have the stingiest defense in the NFL so far, only giving up 288.9 yards (1st) and 18.4 points (3rd) per game. Offensively they're scoring 32.4 points per game (4th, only 2.4 pts behind #1 KC) and are 3rd in total offensive yards.
However, the Bills offense has been relying on the best run game in the league to both win games and to extend drives to help out the defense. The stellar rushing duo of LeSean McCoy and Mike Gillislee has combined for 1,190 yards (148.8 yards per game) and 8 touchdowns so far, averaging 4.6 yards per carry.
That duo just took a big hit as the Bills front office today reported that LeSean McCoy has a torn pectoral suffered in their week 6 game against the 49ers. The injury will keep McCoy on the sidelines for 30-40 weeks, meaning his season has come to an end.
With McCoy out, Gillislee saw an increase in carries against the Dolphins in week 7 and with some designed runs for QB Tyrod Taylor and a few runs by James White, the Bills were able to rush for 126 yards. But the points were missing and the Dolphins won the game 27-24 with the game winning field goal coming in overtime.
The Dolphins lost in Seattle in week 1 but has since won six straight, the last being the OT win against the Bills before heading into their bye week. The Bills are still 1st in the AFC East, but with McCoy out, that might change soon.
Also, someone should tell the Jets (1-7) that the new San Antonio franchise will have the #1 overall pick in the 2017 draft no matter what, so stop tanking!

JASON GARRETT BENCH TONY ROMO; QB'S FUTURE IN DALLAS UNCERTAIN
While Tony Romo has been out with injury, rookie QB Dak Prescott has ceased on the opportunity and taken Dallas by storm. The former franchise QB is out, the future is in. So what's next for Tony Romo?
Prescott has completed 132 of 192 attempts for 1,825 yards, 17 touchdowns and 4 interceptions and a 5-1 record after Romo got injured. Tony Romo is healthy now but won't be the starter, at least not while Prescott is performing the way he has been lately. At the same time, Romo showed in week 1 that he's still a solid QB and at age 36 he doesn't have the time nor the desire to sit on the bench for too long. He needs to be a starter.
Romo might be thinking about retirement although based on his week 1 play he looks like he still has another few good years left in him. The Cowboys can afford to keep Romo on the roster as long as Prescott is on his rookie contract, although getting rid of Romo's contract would free up cap space to strengthen other positions on the roster. Jerry Jones might be out to get some compensation for his aging QB but he didn't get any trade offers before the trade deadline, possibly because of Romo's contract, age, history with injuries or all of the above. so the interest around the league is luke warm at best.
However, a unique possibility that makes sense and would allow Jerry Jones to get out of a terrible contract he's only made worse over the years with countless restructures, is to make Romo available in the upcoming Expansion draft that will take place after the 2016 season. If the Cowboys release or trade Romo they'll have to take a $14.3M cap penalty next year but if he's selected in the expansion draft, they'll avoid a cap penalty as the new franchise will have to absorb all salary and bonuses in Romo's contract. Sounds like an ideal way to get out of a contract that with Prescott's excellent play recently seems more and more like a huge problem, right?
Well, Jerry Jones might not be so fond of it and not just because he won't receive any compensation for him although getting rid of Romo's contract could be considered compensation enough at this point. As mentioned earlier, San Antonio and the south of Texas is Cowboys country and Tony Romo is guaranteed to have a lot of fans down there. For a new San Antonio franchise, bringing in Tony Romo could be a great way to attract fans and win some football games in their very first season. A guy like Romo would sell jerseys and match tickets on name alone and could secure San Antonio a good chunk of the market with little effort.
Jerry Jones is not happy about the NFL granting Texas a third franchise. He sees a new team in San Antonio as real competition and giving them a free star QB with a lot of fans in Texas is probably not the way to compete. So, the question becomes, does the negatives outweigh the positives?

WHO'S THE QB IN DALLAS?
Tony Romo is struggling with an injury and a rookie is looking to take his place.
Despite a 31-21 loss in the season opener, Tony Romo completed 24 of 39 passes for 307 yards and 3 TD's against the Giants. Then, after completing 2 passes for 21 yards against Washington, Romo was sacked and broke his thumb. Rookie QB Dak Prescott stepped in and despite som early struggles, Prescott completed 15 or 29 passes for 197 yards, 2 TD's and an interception and lead the Cowboys to their first win of the season. With a full week to prepare for his second regular season game, Dak Prescott impressed the home crowd with a solid performance (25/34, 387 yards, 3 TD's) in a convincing win over the Bears.
For a rookie QB, what Dak Prescott has shown so far has all of Dallas talking about their new franchise QB. On Sunday he lead the Cowboys to his third victory on three attempts, this time against Tom Brady's 49ers. For his second game in a row, Prescott threw for more than 300 yards and 3 TD's as the Cowboys brought a 34-10 win home from the west coast.
Tony Romo is expected to be back from injury after the bye week when the Eagles come to Dallas, but it remains to be seen whether the veteran still has a starting job in the NFL by then.
Other notable injures around the league

VOTE WILL DECIDE THE NAME OF NFL's 32nd FRANCHISE; THE ALAMODOME GETS A FACELIFT
It's been done before done to death some would say but Stanley Seraffian views a poll in San Antonio the ideal way of finding a name for his new NFL franchise.
"We want fans in San Antonio to feel a sense of ownership to the team that's coming to their town," Seraffian commented on the reasoning behind the poll.
"We want people to come and cheer for a team they helped create."
A list of possible team names will be put together by the team management working together with various people in San Antonio, from your average sports fan, to journalists, from the head coach of the UTSA Roadrunners to the mayor himself.
Whether the vote will work or not remains to be seen but most people in San Antonio are at least happy about Seraffian's first order of business which is to start renovations on the Alamodome. Even though the plan is to start work on a brand new NFL stadium as soon as they find a plot, Seraffian will finance a number of upgrades, including increased seating in the Alamodome, before they move in, upgrades that will benefit the UTSA Roadrunners and the city of San Antonio itself for years. That kind of goodwill from an NFL owner is easy to get behind.
The new NFL franchise signed a 5 year lease at the Alamodome but hope to have their new stadium ready by the 2019 or 2020 season. If they can find a plot, that is.

Trades
The Falcons think they have a good shot at the Lombardi trophy this year and has just sent their 2018 2nd and 7th round picks plus their 2017 6th round pick to Jacksonville for DT Roy Miller III who they think can be the final missing piece on their defense.
Another team with a pretty good defense is the Denver Broncos but they've struggled at the DE position and today decided to send a 2017 2nd rounder and a 2018 7th rounder to Baltimore to acquire Lawrence Guy. John Elway said Lawrence would not only be an immediate upgrade but someone they're looking to sign long-term.
Signings
The deepest free agency in league history has been exciting to follow but its overstocked shelves are emptying out as ex-Patriots are finding new homes around the league. Some of the top targets are already off the board;
WR Danny Amendola have signed with the Eagles while Safety Patrick Chung went to their rivals in Washington to shut him down. Falcons upgraded at OT by signing Sebastian Vollmer while Devin McCourty will face his twin brother in the AFC South having signed for the Texans. And with Luke Keuchly already one of the very best in the league at MLB, the Panthers just brought in Dont'a Hightower. That's just filthy!

We already have the Cowboys in Dallas and in 2002 we were introduced to the Texans of Houston. Now San Antonio will have an NFL franchise to call their own. After months of speculation, rumors and miles of newspaper articles about where the 32nd NFL franchise will call home, the NFL and new owner Stanley Seraffian have finally reached an agreement with the city of San Antonio to award the state of Texas its third NFL team. The news was revealed at a joint press conference this morning held at the NFL offices.
In 2014 the Oakland Raiders were considering a move to San Antonio and for good reason; San Antonio is the largest city without an NFL franchise, the Alamadome is a 64,000 seat indoor stadium ready for an NFL franchise to move in and the extraordinary devotion shown by the local sports fans to the San Antonio Spurs is admirable and something many NFL teams can only dream of. At the end of the day, for a franchise in a hurry to find a home and a stadium to play at, San Antonio makes a lot of sense, although owner Staley Seraffian was more focused on the great fans rather than conveniency, possibly trying to smooth-talk the San Antonians before setting up head quarters.
Because one should keep in mind that San Antonio and the surrounding areas is Cowboys country and despite his outwards support for a new football team in Texas, people on the inside of the process has told reporters that despite eventually voting in favor of San Antonio, Jerry Jones has been actively trying to prevent the deal going through. There will certainly be competition although the Cowboys and San Antonio franchise playing in different conferences may help but Texas is a football state and it shouldn't be too difficult for Seraffian to attract a large following alongside the many Cowboys fans.
It was confirmed that the new franchise will share the Alamodome with the UTSA Roadrunners for at least the first few seasons, Stanley Seraffian having signed a 5-year lease, but that they hope to break ground on a new stadium within a year. Stanely Seraffian said that he is in negotiations with the city of San Antonio, which owns the Alamodome, to find a plot for a new stadium but also to make some upgrades and changes to the Alamodome before the new franchise moves in. We'll have more details on this as they emerge.
The Alamodome will host an NFL franchise in the 2017 season.

The Browns Quest for a franchise QB continues and even though some Browns fans might want to postpone their verdict for at least another few weeks, others claim they've finally found their franchise QB in Cody Kessler. The 23-year old out of USC was the Browns' 3rd round pick of the draft this spring and has impressed both his own fans and some media experts around the league. Kessler has completed 43 of 61 attempts for 553 yards, 6 TD's and 2 INT's and a 117.7 QB rating. Only two players have more passing yards through 3 games of preseason; one is Aaron Rodgers, which makes Cody Kessler look good, while the other is Dan Orlovsky, which reminds you it's still preseason.
In L.A. the future looks more uncertain as their franchise QB prospect and poster boy for the Rams' return to L.A. (Goff is born in California and played his college football for the California Golden Bears) has struggled with the new challenges the NFL brings to any rookie QB.
Goff started the preseason with 98 passing yards but also threw two interceptions and due to a minor injury was held out of the team's second preseason loss before returning against the Broncos in week 3. Goff completed only 3 of 7 attempts for 49 yards for a total of 147 yards, 2 interceptions and a QB rating of just 32.1 through 2 preseason games. That has some Rams fans worried but then again, he was up against the Broncos defense and I hear those guys are pretty good...
So far it looks like the newly signed ex-Patriot Jimmy Garoppolo will get the start in week 1 after being the only QB on the Rams roster with a somewhat acceptable performance. Goff migth still be the franchise QB down the line, but he doesn't look up for the challenge just yet.
The NFL preseason is all about finding your 53 best players and getting them ready for a long and hard NFL season and avoid injuries. Sadly, the start of the regular season will kick off without several starters after training camp and preseason game injuries.
The 2016 season is already over for Cincinnati running back Giovani Bernard. Bernard suffered a shoulder injury in training camp which means unless the Bengals reach the Super bowl, we won't see Bernard on a football field this season. Jeremy Hill looks set to carry the workload for Cincinnati this season with Rex Burkhead and Cedric Peerman in the rotation. Marvin Lewis stated that he was happy with the running backs he currently had. The Bengals will also be without DT Andrew Billings (PCL tear) and OT Cedric Ogbuehi (torn rotator cuff), both expected to miss the entire season.
Two teams will be without their starting QB as both Arizona's Carson Palmer (ruptured disk, out for 8-10 weeks) and Detroit's Matthew Stafford (hamstring tear, out 3-4 weeks) will miss significant time for playoff chasing teams.

It's been a tumultuous offseason for the ex-Patriots players all of a sudden finding themselves without a job but the offers have not been few and far between as the other 31 NFL teams have tried to take advantage of the deepest free agency the league has ever experienced. The top two targets have now decided on where they'll play next season.
Tom Brady grew up a 49ers fan and the 39-year old has now taken the opportunity to follow in Joe Montana's footsteps Brady's big idol growing up as he will take the field wearing a 49ers uniform next season. Brady signed a 3-year contract worth $42 million but neither Brady nor anyone else knows exactly how many of those years he'll actually play.
Brady's favorite target, Rob Gronkowski, has already decided on his immediate future and like Brady, the league's best tight end is returning home. Gronkowski grew up just outside Buffalo and today signed a 3-year deal to play for the Bills. That's not going to go down well with at least some Patriots fans...
The top two targets may be off the board, but there are still plenty of talented ex-Patriots players out there looking for new homes.

The Patriots are out and what will replace them is yet to be seen but one thing seems certain; the 32nd NFL franchise is not staying in New England. In this article we'll give you our opinion on which city could have an NFL franchise coming to their town in the near future. While a lot of football fans across the country are still trying to figure out the details of the blurry picture the Patriots leaving the NFL still is, one man has to act fast and connect the dots later. That man is Stanley Seraffian, the newest NFL owner who was awarded the 32nd NFL franchise after being the only man who said he could deliver said franchise by the start of the 2017 season. It's a tall order, starting from scratch without a single player or coach under contract and it doesn't get easier when you don't even have a city to call home. Seraffian needs to act fast it's not just a matter of finding a city but also a stadium to host NFL games so we've done our part and compiled this list of the top 3 cities that not only wants an NFL franchise, but could give them a place to play games in just over a year.
We've ruled out any cities west of Texas as, at least in our heads, a team playing in the East division should stay, well, in the east (the Cowboys are already pushing the limits!). The NFL, who are working with Seraffian and his task group on this project having already done a lot of the work in connection with the Houston Texans expansion, also confirmed that they have not visited with London nor Mexico City, two cities that would require extensive research, negotiations and, in London's case, figuring out how to schedule an NFL season with 8 different teams visiting London in the regular season and the jet lag and travel time that involves, not to mention the issues of scheduling a home playoff game for a London based franchise.
However, they did not rule out moving abroad which leads us to believe they're looking at our neighbors in the north. Both Montreal and Vancouver have hosted NFL games in the past, but the more likely option is Toronto due to its media market size and the fact that they've hosted Buffalo Bills' home games in the more recent past.
Second on our list are two cities in the state of Texas. Texas is a huge football market and despite already hosting two NFL franchises, Austin and San Antonio are still big cities without one. Both cities would want an NFL franchise and are both big enough to host one, but we've decided to include San Antonio on our list because of the Alamodome, an 'NFL stadium' without an NFL franchise.
Lastly, we would love to see a team based in Brooklyn, New York. It has a high population and loyal football fans but with the Jets and Giants holed up in New Jersey, Brooklyn doesn't really have a team of their own. A downtown stadium would be awesome to pull off, although that might only be a dream, but there should be plenty of sites around downtown Brooklyn that are easy to get to or at least easy enough to improve accessibility for. The problem here is to find a place to play while building a new stadium.
So, that's our top tips for Seraffian. Move your franchise to either Toronto, San Antonio or Brooklyn. You're welcome!
