2016 Preseason #03: Next City to Host NFL Franchise Revealed
Posted on October 9, 2017 at 12:23 PM.
We already have the Cowboys in Dallas and in 2002 we were introduced to the Texans of Houston. Now San Antonio will have an NFL franchise to call their own.

After months of speculation, rumors and miles of newspaper articles about where the 32nd NFL franchise will call home, the NFL and new owner Stanley Seraffian have finally reached an agreement with the city of San Antonio to award the state of Texas its third NFL team. The news was revealed at a joint press conference this morning held at the NFL offices.

In 2014 the Oakland Raiders were considering a move to San Antonio and for good reason; San Antonio is the largest city without an NFL franchise, the Alamadome is a 64,000 seat indoor stadium ready for an NFL franchise to move in and the extraordinary devotion shown by the local sports fans to the San Antonio Spurs is admirable and something many NFL teams can only dream of. At the end of the day, for a franchise in a hurry to find a home and a stadium to play at, San Antonio makes a lot of sense, although owner Staley Seraffian was more focused on the great fans rather than conveniency, possibly trying to smooth-talk the San Antonians before setting up head quarters.

Because one should keep in mind that San Antonio and the surrounding areas is Cowboys country and despite his outwards support for a new football team in Texas, people on the inside of the process has told reporters that despite eventually voting in favor of San Antonio, Jerry Jones has been actively trying to prevent the deal going through. There will certainly be competition – although the Cowboys and San Antonio franchise playing in different conferences may help – but Texas is a football state and it shouldn't be too difficult for Seraffian to attract a large following alongside the many Cowboys fans.

It was confirmed that the new franchise will share the Alamodome with the UTSA Roadrunners for at least the first few seasons, Stanley Seraffian having signed a 5-year lease, but that they hope to break ground on a new stadium within a year. Stanely Seraffian said that he is in negotiations with the city of San Antonio, which owns the Alamodome, to find a plot for a new stadium but also to make some upgrades and changes to the Alamodome before the new franchise moves in. We'll have more details on this as they emerge.

The Alamodome will host an NFL franchise in the 2017 season.
