First three episodes of The Pacific are in the books and so far, pretty good. I was expecting Band of Brothers for the Pacific theater, but it's definitely it's own thing, with very few similarities to the style of Band of Brothers. It is definitely comes across as more of a character study and more outwardly emotional in comparison to the first three episodes of Band of Brothers, well actually, more so than the whole of Band of Brothers (with the exception of episode 9, Why We Fight and a couple of scenes from the Ardennes).
There's something about telling the story of the Pacific theater of WWII that comes across completely different compared to the tellings of the European theater. I think it always comes across more sleepily than Europe does, much less frenetic in it's pace. If you've seen The Thin Red Line, you know what I'm talking about when you compare that film to Saving Private Ryan.
The Pacific has it's work cut out for it, having to work to differentiate itself from it's inevitable comparisons to Band of Brothers, and the fact that many viewers simply aren't as familiar with the history of the Pacific theater, but so far, I think it stands a fighting chance.
