How Long Do You Think The Thunder Will Remain Contenders?
Posted on May 26, 2011 at 12:36 AM.
Personally, I like the Thunder however, although they are young they have a small window to win a championship. Durant will always be good there is no doubt about that, there should be no worries about him besides injuries, he isn't the main focus of this babble. I think that the Thunder's success relies on the development of Russell Westbrook. I think that Russell Westbrook is a shooting guard, like Allen Iverson I think if he wants to reach his maximum potential he should move to the two where his main focus is scoring not creating offense for other people. Then there is the supporting cast, James Harden is obviously the best bench player they have but how long do you think he wants to remain that? This was a guy who was drafted third overall. His contract is up soon so it wouldn't surprise me to think that he would eventually leave the Thunder to become a premier player. Ibaka is a solid player and can grow to become better and someone who I can see sticking with the team. Everyone else is question marks, Collison? Maynor? Players who aren't always consistent and playing their best.

To me I think that in two years we will have a true measurement of how much longer the Thunder can contend for a title. Russell Westbrook will be at the end of his contract and I think if the opportunity comes where an offer for a point guard who makes better decisions and a first round pick is given to the Thunder, I can see them looking into it. The Thunder are a young team and certainly have a lot of talent but I feel that they took this Conference Finals experience as just that, an experience. They see it as if they will be back when that isn't always guaranteed. I can see the team eventually losing players via free agency or whatever. I only see a small window for this team especially since the NBA is evolving into a "Big 3" league and becoming more competitive. But that is just my two cents, anyone else feel this way?

I'd agree with you in saying championships aren't given and no team has a big "window", but as of right now tr thunder are becoming the most talented team in the west. Despite all of the media trying to separate them, theyre a tight knit group, and harden will be given that starting role but they don't have anyone who can score off the bench this year. I don't really see any of the starting 5 leaving anytime soon, and you're speaking as if they don't have picks in the draft or money to spend in free agency. There's still room for talent on this team and loads of promise in this young team who has 2 playoff runs under the belt.

I don't think they have a small window as long as they have durant and westbrook they will always be vying for a title. But they will never win a title without Westbrook learning how to control his pace better and also until westbrook exercises better shot selection.

I think the addition of a low post threat would also help them. I think Durant is more effective at the 3, so if the Thunder went big with either Ibaka or Perkins and then a scoring power forward along with Durant that would be a formidable frontcourt. But then again to get the most out of a low post scorer, Westbrook would have to play with more patience and within in the offense. Right now the thunder are suited well for Westbrook's frenetic pace, but that frenetic pace can be dicey at times and more often than not a frenetic offense will hit major obstacles in the playoffs where the defense is of a higher quality,.

But I do think the thunder can compete, but they need to refine the cast around Durant because Durant is a solid foundation
