SPECTACULAR COMEBACK!
What a game! What a comeback. After being down 21-0, and losing starting QB Napoleon Cabral to injury, the upstart UNC Greensboro Spartans found a way to win. "This was not how we wanted the first half to go," said coach Ricky Proehl. "But, we found a way to work together as a team to make the comeback dream a reality. What really saved us was the play of our backup QB- Kenny Holly. He started the game 7 for 7 and ended with almost 450 yards passing. The game ball belongs to him."
Holly, a redshirt sophomore who originally went to NC State, had a day for the ages. After having been definitively whipped in the spring competition for the starting spot, no one expected him to have the amazing aerial performance he did in this game.
Starting Quarterback Napoleon Cabral did not look like himself all day, and eventually left the game in the 2nd quarter with a pulled groin. Before the injury he was 6/17 with 109 yards passing and two very costly interceptions. He should be cleared to play for next week's game against Florida State in Tallahassee.
Duke Head Coach, David Cutcliffe was not happy with the way his team let UNCG stick around and eventually steal the Win. "We simply did not have a killer instinct today," he said. "We did everything right in the first half: hassled the Freshman Quarterback, got turnovers, jumped to a big lead, everything. But the truth is good football teams slam the door shut, today we were not a good football team. Props to the Holly kid. He played like an All-American today."

The Spartans can't start out next week like they did today and expect to stay competitive. They will travel to Tallahassee to face off against the Florida State Seminoles. FSU looks to be out for revenge after getting upset on the road at Pittsburgh 20-24 last week.

Coach Ricky Proehl and staff are very excited about the upcoming schedule in this the inaugural season of FBS level football for the UNC Greensboro Spartans. As an independent, UNCG had two options: schedule cupcakes and lower division opponents to boost their overall record or aim for the fences and have a "anyone, anywhere, anytime" approach to the schedule. Coach Proehl opted for the latter. "We want to go out there and compete with everyone," said the coach. "We were very intentional about who we scheduled, and while it will make for a challenging year; we want to lay the foundation for our program by getting as much exposure as possible and playing the very best."
The schedule is anything but easy with match-ups against 3 of the preseason top 25 and some very challenging opponents who could definitely make appearance in the polls later in the season. This writer is having trouble seeing many W's for the Spartans. It looks like there are 3 winable games. In fact all 12 could result in L's on the year.
NOTE: I am acting as O.C. Rex Monroe and will be playing every game. Using the ps3 community rosters. ALL-AMERICAN difficulty. (I created UNCG as a 1star team, hoping to build them up all the way to the top eventually)

Coach Ricky Proehl Announces Coordinators, Releases Depth Chart[/center]
Coach Ricky Proehl has ended the speculation and announced his choices for offensive and defensive coordinator. The offensive coordinator should be no stranger to fans of Carolina Sports: Dan Morgan.
After playing professionally for the Panthers (and Saints) and most recently serving as a position coach with the Seattle Seahawks, Morgan is happy to have the opportunity. "I'm looking forward to being back in this part of the world," said Morgan. "I know this will be an uphill battle, but it is exciting to get the opportunity to run the defense. When Ricky called me, I instantly let him know that I'd like to be a part of what he is building here in Greensboro."
While the D.C. was no shock, the offensive coordinator choice will definitely catch some fans off guard. Instead of choosing someone with experience, coach Proehl went a different route.
"After meeting with executives from Fox, we agreed that the best way to encourage the rest of the country to get behind the team was to do something out of the box: hire a fan," said Proehl. "We accepted resumes from fans around the country and were very impressed with the applicants. I invited three to come out for interviews and it was the interview process that set it apart for me."
Coach Proehl chose to hire Rex Monroe, a 23 year old Kansas State University graduate, as his offensive coordinator. "I was thoroughly impressed with this kid's knowledge of the X's & O's and his passion for the game," declared Proehl. "He will totally resonate with the players and once they see what he has in mind for this season, they will follow him. I know this might seem like a publicity stunt, but rest assured Spartan fans will be glad that Rex is on our side."
Proehl then let the coordinators unveil the depth chart going into the fall. There was no surprise that Ricky's sons Austin and Blake show up prominently on both sides of the ball. Austin was granted immediate eligibility after transferring from North Carolina, where he redshirted last year. Blake, who was lightly recruited, will have a chance to prove the rest of D-1 wrong since he wasn't offered a scholarship by any other FBS institution.

At the unveiling of the Uniforms, the University has also announced the hiring of current Carolina Panthers (and Greensboro, NC resident) wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl as inaugural head coach of the UNCG Spartan football program. Athletic Director Kim Record said Proehl's connection to the state of North Carolina, his continued residence in the Greensboro area, and his extensive NFL experience all made him the clear-cut choice to serve as UNCG head football coach. "We loved what we heard from Ricky in the interview process," said Record. "His commitment to our area and passion for North Carolina definitely came through. We are also excited about his training and coaching experience gained through ProehlificPark." Proehlific Park family sports complex and fitness center, located in Greensboro, is a coaching and fitness facility owned and operated by the Proehl family.
Proehl was very excited about the opportunity to build something new in Greensboro. "I am really looking forward to hitting the ground running here," he said to the assembled news media. "This has all the makings of something special and I feel honored to have been chosen as the man who will lead the way in this endeavor."
While Proehl was mum about filling out his coaching staff, he did give those in attendance a few hints: "I'd like to use all of my connections to fill out the staff. Thankfully my time in the NFL as a player and coach has given me an extensive array of connections and I plan on using all of them to build the best possible group of leaders for this football team."
Many pundits believe Proehl will reach out to other former players such as Kurt Warner, Isaac Bruce, Jake Delhomme, Dan Morgan. Proehl has already confirmed reports that Proehlific Park Director of Recruiting Services, Phil Johnstone, will serve in a similar role on the UNCG staff.
The FOX SPORTS 1 "From the Ground Up" Crew will begin filming this week. The weekly show will be aired on Thursday Nights from 8:00-9:00EST. Once the season gets underway, there will also be a weekly Coach's Show which will air on Saturday mornings from 9:30-10:30 AM EST. That show will feature interviews, highlights, a wrap-up of the previous week's game, and a preview of the upcoming Spartan football games.
Fox Sports 1 will continue to keep you updated on UNCG SPARTAN Football. Stay Tuned!
NCAA FBS WELCOMES UNC GREENSBORO
After the recent decision by the University of Idaho to drop FBS level football, the NCAA has been scrambling to find a replacement school for the 2013-2014 Season. (Due to the fact that FCS level school have already scheduled their seasons, they were not an option for upgrading.)
This left NCAA President Mark Emmert along with the Board of Directors in a conundrum. After many weeks of deliberations and ballots, the NCAA extended an invitation to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNC Greensboro). Other school considered for the invitation included: Texas-Arlington, St. Louis, Southern Utah, and Pittsburg State University. The Board of Directors eventually settled on UNC Greensboro due to their location in a growing market and their D-1 basketball program.
UNCG athletic director, Kim Record, was very enthusiastic at the recently concluded press conference.
While the Spartans will remain affiliated with the SOCON in all other sports, they will begin this football season as a football independent.
An ecstatic Kim Record announces surprise developments in the UNCG football program.
Record also broke the news that the Spartans football team will be the subject of a weekly in-depth program on the soon to be launched FOX SPORTS 1 network. The program which will be titled, "FROM THE GROUND UP" will give viewers an exclusive, behind-the scenes look at the development of the Spartan football program. "It will be 'Hard Knocks' with a college twist," said producer Tom Goldenschmidt. The network will also have exclusive TV coverage rights for all UNCG football games.
"This has the opportunity to put Spartan Football on the map," exclaimed Record. "We are VERY excited to see the dividends this coverage pays in national exposure and recruiting for our new football program. We are also excited to see the spike in national attention's effect on our other athletic programs," she added.
As for now, the Spartan program will be actively pursuing hiring a coaching staff and recruiting players for the fall.
