2013 WEEK 1 vs. Duke Recap
Posted on July 18, 2013 at 11:01 PM.
SPECTACULAR COMEBACK!

What a game! What a comeback. After being down 21-0, and losing starting QB Napoleon Cabral to injury, the upstart UNC Greensboro Spartans found a way to win. "This was not how we wanted the first half to go," said coach Ricky Proehl. "But, we found a way to work together as a team to make the comeback dream a reality. What really saved us was the play of our backup QB- Kenny Holly. He started the game 7 for 7 and ended with almost 450 yards passing. The game ball belongs to him."

Holly, a redshirt sophomore who originally went to NC State, had a day for the ages. After having been definitively whipped in the spring competition for the starting spot, no one expected him to have the amazing aerial performance he did in this game.

Starting Quarterback Napoleon Cabral did not look like himself all day, and eventually left the game in the 2nd quarter with a pulled groin. Before the injury he was 6/17 with 109 yards passing and two very costly interceptions. He should be cleared to play for next week's game against Florida State in Tallahassee.

Duke Head Coach, David Cutcliffe was not happy with the way his team let UNCG stick around and eventually steal the Win. "We simply did not have a killer instinct today," he said. "We did everything right in the first half: hassled the Freshman Quarterback, got turnovers, jumped to a big lead, everything. But the truth is good football teams slam the door shut, today we were not a good football team. Props to the Holly kid. He played like an All-American today."

The Spartans can't start out next week like they did today and expect to stay competitive. They will travel to Tallahassee to face off against the Florida State Seminoles. FSU looks to be out for revenge after getting upset on the road at Pittsburgh 20-24 last week.
