Army Update:

Army was hit up for 2 losses against Notre Dame last week when it was learned after the game that senior HB/FB Jared Hassin had sustained a sprained elbow that would leave him on the injured list for at least 4 weeks. That is a major blow to the 3rd rated rushing team in the country last year. Hassin led the country with 2027 yards rushing and 22 rushing touchdowns. Senior HB Malcolm Brown will be taking over rushing duties until Hassin's return. Last week Brown rushed for 80 yards on 19 attempts while Hassin could only muster 28 yards on 13 attempts before sustaining the injury.

It's a new season at Westpoint and there is plenty to talk about. First and foremost, after a disappointing effort to keep track of season 1 of this Dynasty, I will be doing a much better job this season attempting to update every 3-4 weeks. The BIG news around College Football has to be conference re-alignment...round 2. Army, Navy, and Notre Dame have finally stepped up and joined a conference leaving BYU as the only Independent team in Division 1 Football. The new conferences are as follows:

When asked why Army decided to make the move to the Big East, coach Ellerson replied "It was high time this team made the move to conference play. After last season, winning 10 games and getting the bid to play in the Military Bowl of all games, we decided as a program that the only way we can continue to rebuild this team is by winning conference championships and playing in big time bowl games." Coach Ian Shields, Army offensive coordinator, is said to be one of the biggest supporters of the move to an automatic qualifying conference. Shields is going into his fourth year as OC at Army and is in the final year of his contract. After producing one of the most dominant running teams of the season in 2011, his top RB Jared Hassin (SR) is also in the preseason top 5 for the Heisman trophy. Not only is Shields quickly rising as a star at West Point, but his hybrid Pro-Style/Option playbook is gaining significant attention around the country. Expect Shields to be a desirable pick up in the off-season for many teams in college football.

Joining the Big East has solidified a solid schedule for the upcoming season including key games against #20 Notre Dame, Navy, Rutgers, and #9 TCU. Here is Army's 2012 schedule.

It is now Week 11 and Army is rolling through their schedule. After a minor slip up against Vanderbilt, allowing them to score 24 unanswered points and win on a FG with 35 seconds to go, they went into their game against FCS East and gave the fans a show they would never forget. Hassin and Brown combine for 435 yards rushing and shout out the Rhinos 84-0. Here is an updated look at Army's 2011 schedule.

And Head Coach Rich Ellerson made the move to move backup HB Malcolm Brown to start kick and punt returner and moved Josh Jackson to backup. "Jackson just isn't producing the way would expected him to at the returner position. Brown has been improving his game every week after losing his starting job to Hassin a few weeks into the season. He has shown me he is ready to do anything for this program and I am rewarding him with this opportunity."

I am making this 7 weeks into my Dynasty so its a little delayed, but I figured this was a good place to keep track of my dynasty. I am 7 weeks into the season with Army. A 1 star team on the independent track with Navy, Notre Dame, and now BYU. At this point we are 6-1, a remarkable season considering the level of talent available on both sides of the ball.

The lost to Northwestern was very two sided. They went into the 2nd quarter up 21-0, but I was able to bring it back to 28-17 at the half. Unfortunately I was unable to produce in the 4th quarter and lost by two touchdowns. After that game I switched from Army's option offense to a Army-CU hybrid Option/Pro offense. It has worked out pretty well so far. I moved Jared Hassin (Junior, FB) to starting HB and moved Malcolm Brown (Junior, HB) to backup. Hassin was producing huge numbers at the FB position under the option offense and Brown was struggling under the new hybrid offense.
