It's a new season at Westpoint and there is plenty to talk about. First and foremost, after a disappointing effort to keep track of season 1 of this Dynasty, I will be doing a much better job this season attempting to update every 3-4 weeks. When asked why Army decided to make the move to the Big East, coach Ellerson replied "It was high time this team made the move to conference play. After last season, winning 10 games and getting the bid to play in the Military Bowl of all games, we decided as a program that the only way we can continue to rebuild this team is by winning conference championships and playing in big time bowl games." Coach Ian Shields, Army offensive coordinator, is said to be one of the biggest supporters of the move to an automatic qualifying conference. Shields is going into his fourth year as OC at Army and is in the final year of his contract. After producing one of the most dominant running teams of the season in 2011, his top RB Jared Hassin (SR) is also in the preseason top 5 for the Heisman trophy. Not only is Shields quickly rising as a star at West Point, but his hybrid Pro-Style/Option playbook is gaining significant attention around the country. Expect Shields to be a desirable pick up in the off-season for many teams in college football.

Joining the Big East has solidified a solid schedule for the upcoming season including key games against #20 Notre Dame, Navy, Rutgers, and #9 TCU. Here is Army's 2012 schedule.

Pretty disappointing start to the year. While Army was matched up against a tough Notre Dame team, ranked 20 in the coaches poll, coach Ellerson was expecting a much better performance on both sides of the ball. Coach Shields followed up with "If that is how we plan on playing the rest of the season, prepare to see just how deep this roster is. I will not allow players who think they can just show up against one of the best teams in the nation and think that is enough to win. Steelman better get his head straight or he will be watching a freshman play his position." It was an overall tough day for the Army offense as Heisman candidate J. Hassin went down in the 1st half with a sprained elbow. He will be out at least 4 weeks. Army will travel to Eastern Michigan in hopes of bouncing back and giving coaches Ellerson, Shields, and new Defensive Coordinator Mark Criner a reason to smile. Here are the stats from week one.
