On a beautiful Monday afternoon in Washington DC, the Washington Nationals prevail over the visiting Phillies 3-2, behind a marvelous pitching performance from John Lannan(1-0). Lannan out dueled the Phillies new ace Roy Halladay(0-1) to get the Nationals a win on Opening Day. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 4th when with 2 outs, Josh Willingham doubled on a inside cutter from Halladay, and Adam Kennedy picked up his first RBI of the year with a 2 out single to drive Willingham in from second to start the scoring. After a scoreless half inning by Lannan, the Nationals had another 2 out rally, this time capitalizing on a rare mistake by Hallada. On a 2-1 pitch, Halladay hit Nyger Morgan in the back. Morgan then stole his first base of the season to get into scoring postion and Willy Taveras wasnt going to let him be wasted as he lined a 1-1 fastball up the middle to score Morgan. Lannan got into some trouble in the 6th by giving up 2 hits, one to Polanco and a infield single to Howard, followed by a close 3-2 walk to Werth. Ibanez lined a single to left to get the Phillies on the board, but Lannan got Rollins to ground into a Fielders Choice to end the innings. Nationals tacked another run on the board against the Phillies bullpen as Willy Harris singles to center to score Ivan Rodriguez to increase the lead back to 2 for the time being. In the 8th, Sean Burnett came in, walked Polanco, gave up a hit to Utley, and after getting Ryan Howard to line out to 1st, Miguel Batista came in to face Jason Werth, he got Werth to fly out to left, but that abled Polanco to come acrossed the plate with the 2nd run. Matt Capps was able to come in and shut the door in the 9th, picking up his 1st save of the year and the Nationals 1st win of the new campaign. The Nations are back in action on Wednesday as they have Scott Olsen on the mound to face fellow lefty Cole Hamels, with a 7:05 pm EST first pitch. It is Program Night at Nationals Park so arrive early as the first 10,000 fans recieve a free Nationals Program.
