Panthers get big win in Miles debut!
Posted on September 17, 2013 at 12:11 AM.
What a way to start the Trent Miles era at Georgia State! A big 48-7 victory over an FCS school may not be too impressive, but for the Panthers, who are in just their fourth season overall and first in the FBS, and winning only 10 out of their first 33 games in school history, is a good start for the new era of Panther football. After a little bit of a sluggish start to the game, the Panthers got going against Samford with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter. Ben McLane hit true freshman wide receiver Jordan Giles with a seven yard pass to open up the scoring and junior running back Gerald Howse plunged ahead for a one yard score to put the Panthers up 14-0. Samford would strike back in the second quarter with a short touchdown run, but the Panthers would answer back with three more scores in the first half, a Kelton Hill five yard catch from McLane, a Drew Pearson six yard catch from McLane and a twelve yard run by Howse. The defense held firm in the second half and did not allow another score by Samford the rest of the game. Howse would add on another touchdown on an electrifying 58 yard run in the third and kicker, Wil Lutz, added on a pair of field goals in the fourth to cap off the scoring.
