After going 8-4 last season, UTSA opened on the road against New Mexico and walked away licking their wounds, 17-0. Both teams started out slow, but drove the field to end the first half taking a 7-0 lead on a six yard touchdown pass from David Vega to Andrew Robinson. After halftime, Vega would find Robinson again on a 63 yard bomb through the air to put the Lobos up 14-0. Justus Adams would add on a field goal with 1:57 remaining in the game to put the Roadrunners away. Head Coach, Larry Coker, put the blame squarely on his shoulders. "We just couldn't get going offensively and we had a few minor miscues on defense that led to scores, but other than that, it was a solid defensive effort. They (New Mexico) just played a better game offensively." The win for the Lobos was the first under new coach, Lou Spanos.
