So its Wednesday and a restructuring is happening in my company. My new boss wants me to change departments into a lateral position from Tech Support Manager to R and D and upgrade services Manager. The position reports directly to him.
This can't be a good thing? Could it? OSer's I need your advice.

It's not really a good thing, but right now, I'd have to say that any job is better than no job. A lot of tech support people are just being let go.

I guess you could look at it as a good thing that you are still making the same money and not being on call.

Yeah I thought about that but I am not sure that this new position will put me in a place for future professional growth. In these economic times maybe I should not make any waves right now and go with the flow.

now you could look at it 2 ways.. one.. the change in responsibility as you stated would look good on the resume, however, based on your experience and relationship with your new report to boss, you may have to do a bit more with a lot less. I had a similar case when my nemesis became my supervisor. had to resort to serious brown nosing but overall its been cool, just cant let my guard down for a sec because he is anal as all heck.
but in the words of my dearly departed grandma.. sometimes you gotta do what you have to do.. in order to do what you want to do.. so suck it up... man up and do you.. at least until the economic times get a helluvalot better.

Thanks for the words of advice. I love it...di what you got to do in order to do what you want to do.

It is a crappy year all around and employees have no power anymore. I do a good chunk of the hiring at my job and if anyone currently on staff gets mad and walks out threatens to leave or gives us a hard time I have a stack of over 400 applications on my desk to replace them.
Stick it out and if you are unhappy find a new job first before making waves.

honestly a lateral move isn't necessarily a bad thing. especially if its under the same boss - with out knowing much else to me that says he values you as part of his team.
the Customer Care organization at my company loves to move around managers every few years. The thinking is it only makes the organization stronger by having a number of managers with intimate knowledge of different aspects of the business. i.e. running the Call Center before going to billing, before working in collections, etc. All those aspects tie into each other so the more well rounded your staff the better as a whole they are.
