More Star Wars....Episode II time
Posted on November 30, 2008 at 11:17 AM.
Ok, Star Wars Episode II is a love or hate affair with the fans. Some love the action enough to get past some of the dull love story moments that prove Lucas shouldn't be writing love stories.

As I stated in last blog, the new Clone Wars got me to go back and start watching the movies again. I watched Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones again yesterday.

The movie start ten years after the Phantom Menace. Anakin is more grown up in body, but we see he is still a kid in how he accepts decisions he doesn't agree with.

Again, you see early on what a puppet master now Grand Chancellor Palpatine. After an assasination attempt on Senator Padmé Amidala, former Queen of Naboo, he ask that she be placed under the protection of Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice, Anakin Skywalker.

Palpatine knows of the temptation this will place on Anakin. He must likely knows that Anakin isn't ready for this. We do find out out that Palpatine and Anakin talk regularly. He surely knows that Anakin is still not strong enough to control his feelings and placing him with someone he fell for could be the break he's counting on.

That first night, the assassin Zam Wesell makes another attempt on Amidala's life, though the Jedi are able to foil her plot. They pursue the assassin through Galactic City, though she is killed by a saberdart, fired by a mysterious "rocket man", before the Jedi can learn the name of her employer. Returning to the Jedi Temple, Obi-Wan is given a new assignment by the High Council; to track down the assassin's killer. Meanwhile, Anakin continues his assignment of protecting the Senator, and is asked to escort her back to her home planet of Naboo. Further, he has become infatuated with Padmé, and relishes the chance to spend time with her. Representative Jar Jar Binks assumes the Senator's duties in her absence. Again, more pieces of the puzzle for Palpatine are in place.

With Obi-Wan gone, Anakin and Padmé start to grow more feelings for one another. Obi-Wan isn't there to warn the younger and try to keep his feelings in check. We do get some of the worst lines I've heard in a love story, but in this viewing they didn't bother me as much. It seemed like Anakin, since not being around women wouldn't know what to say. Again, it made more sense to me this time around.

Anakin has been having nightmares about his mother since the movie began, but while back on Naboo, he decides he must go to her. This makes him and Padmé return to his home world of Tatooine. By doing this, Anakin was disobeying a direct order by Obi-Wan to remain on Naboo.

Upon arriving, he learns that his mother has married a moisture farmer named Cliegg Lars, and travels to the Lars homestead. There, he learns that his mother was kidnapped a month ago by the Tusken Raiders. He travels through the night, and finds her tied and beaten beyond help in a Tusken camp. After a tender exchange between each other, Shmi dies in Anakin's arms. Overwhelmed by a murderous rage, he slaughters the entire Tusken community; men, women and even children. Back at Coruscant, Yoda senses a terrible darkness in the Force as the slaughter continues and you even hear the voice of Qui-Gon Ginn yelling for Anakin to stop. Anakin then brings his mother's body back to the homestead, where her funeral is held.

Anakin has a breakdown after that point where he proclaims he wants to become powerful enough to stop death. He also confesses to Padmé that he murdered all the sand people, even the women and childern. This was one of my favorite scenes in the movie.

Meanwhile, Obi-Wan discovers that a clone army has been built and that a bounty hunter by the name of Jango Fett is the base for the clones. He follows Fett and his clone son, Boba to the planet Geonosis where he is captured and confronted by Count Dooku. We learn Dooku was Qui-Gon's master as he tells him the senate is under the control of a dark lord.

The senate back on Coruscant is seeking to vote the approval of a grand army of the republic. Again, we see the puppet master Palpatine at work. He already got Padmé away from the vote, since he knew she was against the army, but he plants the seed in Jar Jar's head she would be the only one brave enough to suggest that the Grand Chancellor needs special powers in this time. Jar Jar shows his purpose in the Star Wars films when he calls for the vote to grant him the special powers he's craving. It is through these new powers, Palpatine is to become the evil emperor we know he becomes. Again, the puppet master had this plan in full swing.

Anakin and Padmé go to Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan and are quickly captured. There we see the start of the Clone Wars. It starts off as Jedi battle, but when the Jedi are surrounded, Yoda arrives with a clone army.

We see Obi-Wan and Anakin face Count Dooku, but Anakin's ego leads to them being beaten and Anakin loosing an arm. Yoda shows up and we finally get to see him in battle and it didn't disappoint.

The movie ends with the newly formed clone army or Grand Army of the Republic marching off and Anakin and Padmé having a secret wedding.

In the end, everything is in the place the puppet master Palpatine wanted. He has Anakin firmly attached to someone and has the powers he wanted. The seeds are planted for this total control.

Yes, there is more to those movies once viewed as a whole. Next up, Episode III The Revenge of the Sith.

Hayden Christensen's acting in this movie was the worst display of acting I have ever seen. His role in this movie makes this unwatchable for me now and I own the DVD! He was much better in Jumper so part of this blame goes to Lucas and the horrible script. Lucas does a bad job imo of showing Annakin turn to the dark side in the new trilogy. Something just didn't feel right.

The Yoda lightsaber duel was clearly the highlight of this movie and I love watching it.
