MLB The Show 09: Do something more with the draft!!!
Posted on November 23, 2008 at 01:52 PM.
I've always been a big fan of baseball video games. They are some of my favorite. From the days of Bases Loaded and RBI baseball, I've always loved baseball titles.

I remember Sportstalk Baseball and thinking the future is going to be very bright for my favorite sports games. And of course it has been. We've seen dynasty modes become the standard in all sports titles now and it definitely has added more to my enjoyment of baseball titles.

While there are several things that we all want to see and have talked about in length, rule V draft, expanded playoff rosters, all minor leagues are just some of the things we've wanted. One thing I wanted to talk about is the draft. The Rule 4 or just simply called the amateur draft needs some work.

First off, in the video game world, the draft takes place at the end of the season. This is not the case in real life. It is usually held in June. If they want to give the dynasty mode a more authentic feel, we need to have the draft in June like it is in real life. It may not seem like much, but it could go a long way to those of us true fans out there.

With that we need to know something about these kids we're drafting. I know they can't give us real amateurs, but maybe do something different to at least give me and idea of who I'm drafting.

He's my idea. We already hire scouts for each team, so why not make them scout high schools and colleges for the draft as well. These scouts could help me find that seventh round gem that no else sees. Sure I like the idea of the Scouts finding players during the regular season as well, but I just think we need more. I'd like to have a scout list before the draft telling me what players he's seen and which ones he likes the best and why. Then as a GM I can decide if I want to draft based only on the games rating, as we do now, or take a chance on the guys my scout found for me. The better the scout rating, the better the chance of me finding a guy that isn't on the radar and getting a steal in the draft. Of course, a scouts rating can rise and drop too. If he goes out on a limb and scouts too many bust, he might drop in rating.

Now with that idea, we need something so we can see our newly drafted players right away. This is why we are in great need of a Rookies league. The Rookie leagues would allow us to see our talent right away in a role where they are starters and allow us to see if they are ready for the big leagues now or later.

Also, in the draft we should see if they were drafted from a college or a high school and also be made aware of how much they were used in their most reason season. Say I draft a college pitcher who made 30 starts in his college season, that would mean his arm is already going to be a little more tired. I might want to leave him in the rookie leagues for the season instead of risk him throwing his arm out by moving him up. Of course if he's just a lights out guy I could call him up and risk his future for my teams right now. Again, this adds more realism and more meaning to who I'm drafting.

If I've got a team with a shot at the playoffs and have this stud kid that might be able to get me there, I might call him up through the system faster, but I might also ruin his career cause he just was overused by his amateur team.

And last, the Rule V draft really does need to be there to make the draft better. The Rule V draft makes sure if I'm not going to use these guys after 3 years, they might end up elsewhere. That means my gem in waiting, can't wait too long cause if another team's scout saw what I saw, he might get his GM take him from after three years if he's not on the 40 man roster.

Now I may have said this for the Show since that's the game I plan on picking up this year, but really, 2k or anyone out to make a solid baseball game could run with this idea. I just think it would make the dynasty mode more interesting.
