Making a case for edited rosters in Madden 13's CC Mode
Posted on September 4, 2012 at 11:32 AM.
Madden 13 came out last week and most of us on the board already knew to expect the changes. The Franchise mode's transformation into Connected Careers in year one is a bit of a hit and miss. Sure there are elements of CC that we all like, but there are the little things removed that we really miss.

One of the biggest areas of concern is the removal of allowing us to edit the rosters. In the past we were able to fix number issues like a receiver still wearing a single number instead of a double, keeping retired numbers in tact, etc. Those are things that sim gamers find important. EA's removal of this option is one that invokes head scratching from many.

These are areas that should be allowed to be addressed by we the gamers. This is not something that EA should have just removed because for a lot of us it really adds to the game. I hate playing against the 49ers and seeing a receiver wearing number 80 or a quarterback wearing number 16. In past versions I could fix this. Now I can not. Also I can not even fix messed up numbers on my own team. Again it's my team and yet I can't make sure that if a player for the Packers puts on number 15 I am not allowed to change that? That is truly sad. Also there have been many reports of players wearing the same number. That should NEVER happen and shows lazy programing on EA's part. Still if I could edit then this would be fixed.

Also some players don't have the right gear on. In the past I could fix this as well. Now it is left up to the Madden Gods and if they get it wrong then I am forced to live with it.This isn't as big a deal for me, but for a lot of people it is.

As far as player ratings, I don't always agree with EA's ratings. I think some players are under-rated and others are over-rated. I liked being able to tinker with it some. If EA wants to "lock" the rating adjustments once you start CC then so be it. (Even though I think I should be allowed to adjust as I see fit in my career.) We really should be allowed to adjust these. Sure there are those "cheesers" that will make their team a super team, but so what? As long as it is a single player CC then who really cares? Let this be my game. 2K allows me to make adjustments to player through out my dynasty. EA use to but this year it is removed for not really good reason. Plus the with those who don't like to practice this is a work around for them as well. They can progress players as THEY see fit. Not at the whims of some gimmicky role-playing XP.

Another reason for player edits is unexpected changes in the starting positions. The Seattle Seahawks are prime example. Most people assumed going in to training camp that Matt Flynn was going to be named the starter. But a funny thing happened on the way to the season: Russell Wilson out played him and won the job. Now look at my CC, Jackson won the starting job over both. I should have been able to up Wilson and Flynn's rating above that of Jackson. Or at least stuck him at third string behind the other two for the whole preseason, but unless I wanted to control the Seahawks this was no longer an option. In the past I've always been able to fix these things.

Lastly the rookies are one of the biggest reason they need to bring edits back. Since EA very stupidly removed importing of draft classes from the table the new crop of rookies are something I care very little for. At first I was hopeful they'd do something like 2K has in their NBA series and allow us to download draft classes created by other users but that didn't come to pass either. It would be nice if I could at least edit the draft classes and make them be who i want them to be. Then I'd have a class that features people like Matt Barkley. It would feel more rewarding on draft day because I'd at least have some control over who the players are. This would bring back some of the realism past season 1. While I fully doubt EA would allow this kind of editing even if they do patch editing back into the game, changing the rookies names and other information would go a long way in making me feel better about not draft class imports. (But still not the same)

With all the rumors of a patch and all those complaining about the need to bring back roster edits these reasons are just a few that stand out. Here's hoping that in the upcoming patch EA hears the call and gives us back the ability to edit our players. Saying that we can for play now games just doesn't cut it.

Do the right thing EA and make sure that this included in patch 1 for the game. It was foolish to remove them in the first place. Give them back to the gamers and let us decide for ourselves if we want to make edits or not.

I agree with, at the very least, being able to edit uniform number, position, player body appearance and accessories inside CCM. As a Chiefs fan, I drafted a MLB who was a good player... only problem is, he wears number 58. It was Derrick Thomas' number and he's dead. I don't want to see his number running around the field. Also, if I want to run a 4-3 instead of a 3-4, I can't change player positions to match the transition. Finally, EA got the player model wrong on some players, MJD being one of the more jarring - he's skinny in the game. I can't fix any of these things.
I would like to be able to edit the player ratings outside of the game before I start. Some rookies have some odd characteristics and some starting players are rated lower than their backups. I really don't want to edit them inside CCM, I just want the roster right to start the mode, then I can go from there. Editing draft classes is not as important to me, but I hope importing draft classes is back next year.

I agree, Biz. The control over the rosters that 2K gives us inside the dynasty is amazing. I can't understand why Madden continues to come up short and in this year's version actually takes steps backwards in this area.

For all Madden does right this year it gets something this simple so wrong. And the devs seem arrogant in many ways how they have answered the questions about it. Here's hoping they can at least show us they know they are wrong and put the edits back in via a patch. But i don't want it to be a patch we don't see until mid-October. It needs to be sooner rather than later.

Joe, the retired numbers showing up bothers me to no end. I still also think we should be able to edit ratings inside the dynasty as well due to the fact the game's progression is not up to par. Also, for a lot of us since it is my dynasty, let me do with it as I please.

I agree with all you said. Not only that, I would also like to use my own rosters inside of CC mode. That way, I don't have to wait for EA to update the Connected Career rosters for 3 weeks when I could have just made the moves and signings myself. Also, what if I want to create a player and use him in CC mode while controlling an entire team? I don't want to have to do the new Player selection inside CC mode and just control one guy to have that wish granted. And then that brings me to the Legends; one thing I love about NBA 2K recently is that their legends are accessible and able to be used in Association modes if the player wishes to do so. Even though I controlled the Nets, I used to love putting Michael Jordan on the Bulls and seeing how he stacks up against the rest of the league today through viewing the stats (along with other legends on their respective teams). Madden has finally brought back legends to play with, but I can only play with them on a Canton Greats team in Play Now instead of putting Steve Young, Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders together on the Niners; or Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin, with Deion on the Cowboys. Before I got this game, my original plan was to play with the Detroit Lions, after adding Barry Sanders. I can't do any of these things.

Madden 13's Connected Careers mode is so good but so incomplete with just the minor things missing. I don't understand what's up with EA not allowing the user to have control. That's another thing that 2K is so great at -- no matter what, they will always let you have total control of the setup. Us fans have been clamoring for a long time for edit rookie ratings in Franchise mode -- it's weird for them to finally make that happen last year and give us total control of, not only rookies but all players, yet this year completely revert and actually go even further by taking away even more than we had the year prior.

Well said, Plush. I like the fact that those who have comment here aren't just knocking the game either. I love the game, but it kills me they took out little things I enjoyed. I mean heck, I can't even have a true throwback uniform game anymore because they won't even allow me to change the other team's uniform. I hate that. (Plus I hate most of the new Nike uniforms and their stupid collars so I'd have almost everyone playing in last year's uniforms.

I totally agree ith everything said above. I like to change jersey numbers of players who get allocated with retired numbers etc. I see it as pretty disrespectful to legends of the past to be honest.

To me the equipment changes are also important. The apperance of so many players is well......WRONG! (Ryan Tannehill's equipment is so wrong it is rediculous). If EA dont think that the equipment being correct is important then why did they go to the trouble of creating it all. Madden is ment to be realistic, with all the players looking so wrong, as far as I am concerned you may as well give them random names as well (saving the money on paying for NFL licencing and thus make the gme cheaper to us). Furthermore, players change equipment all the time. Thus we should be able to do this an make the game....well, more real again!

Thanks, Stevo. I didn't mention equipment but I'm glad you brought it back up. That does need to be addressed as well. I see this as the gamer having control of his little universe. It is my game, my connected career so let me fix it.

As for the ratings edits. I still say yes even inside of dynasty. The progression is broken this year for young players not seeing action. Allow me to fix that. Hopefully EA hears the call but I'm not holding my breathe.

Agreed this CCM was rushed into the game unfinished and it would appear barely tested judging by the nature and number of bugs being found

CCM is a great start, but it doesn't feel as full as any of us would like. I agree with you there, Briz. The recent announcement about fantasy drafts being brought back today gives me hope. I don't care about fantasy drafts but it is awesome they listened to those who do. I'm hopefully they listen to those of us who want roster edits. While they're at it they could always patch draft classes back in too. I wouldn't mind....
