LOS ANGELES - The season opener was a thriller and a roller coaster ride for the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers led 24-23 after a tight first quarter, but the San Antonio Spurs outscored Los Angeles by 17 in the second quarter to take a 16 point lead into the break. The Spurs' lead got as high as 20 points in the third quarter, and it looked like the Lakers were all but finished. A strong finish of the third quarter, led by Jeff Teague, cut the deficit to 13 going into the fourth quarter. That's when MVP candidate D'Angelo Russell showed up. Russell had a quiet first three quarters, but he took over the fourth. Russell hit back-to-back threes midway through the fourth to cut the lead from 9 all the way down to 3. From there it was back-and-forth until the Lakers finally broke through and took the lead for good with just under 2 minutes left. The Spurs went to LaMarcus Aldridge down the stretch, and Julius Randle's defense on him in the final 3 minutes was a major reason the Lakers came away with a win tonight. Even though the Lakers showed that it would take some time to work in the new pieces to the team, they also showed just how good this team can be when everything comes together.
