Notable Changes:
I. Div. I-AA Teams Added
II. Conference Alignment and Changes
III. Future Plans/Rules About Conferences
I. Div I-AA Teams Added (team replaced in paranthesis):
Northern Iowa (replaced Eastern Michigan)
New Hamsphire (replaced Buffalo)
GA Southern (replaced UL-Monroe)
Eastern Washingnton (replaced Utah St.)
Delaware (replaced Rutgers)
James Madison (replaced UL-LaFayette)
Villanova (replaced Rice)
Montana (replaced LA Tech)
Montana St. (replaced San Jose St.)
Appalachain St. (replaced Marshall)
Richmond (replaced Memphis)
North Dakota St. (replaced North Texas)
--Villanova, Montana St., GA Southern, N. Dakota St. were placed in the Independent Conference because they are recent powers in Div I-AA, but have not been constant perenial powers. They may join a conference within the next year or two.--
II. Conference Alignment and Changes:
The Big Ten's divisions were realigned geographically. The Legends div. is now the West and consists of-
Minnesota
Iowa
Nebraska
N'Western
Illinois
Wisconsin
The Leaders div. is now the East and consists of-
Ohio St.
Michigan
Michigan St.
Indiana
Purdue
Penn St.
Conference-USA has also undergone some changes. Some teams were replaced by Div. 1-AA teams, so the conference will not be divisional for the 2011-12 season.
The Big East has been stripped of its Automatic Qualifier status because of sanctions put in place after luring TCU into league membership. The league's AQ status will be re-evaluated after the season upon the addition of stronger members due to the departure of Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC.
Conference Alignments will be visible when the Conference Outlooks are released in Week 1.
III. Future Plans/Rules About Conferences
As of 9/26/11, all approved (NOT rumored) conference realignment plans will take affect for the 2012-13 seasons. Meaning- TCU will join the Big East, A&M will join the SEC, etc. I reserve the right to make (realistic) adjustments to the conferences as I see fit and will attempt to utilize the invite system. Thus, a team that has progressively strong years in their lower-tiered conference will be invited to move up into a better conference. This also works in the other direction as well. Geography, previous season records, overall team rating, and program prestige (# of stars a program has) will be the determining factors in conference realignment.
NO CONFERENCE shall have more than 14 members. NO "SUPER" CONFERENCES may be created. Navy and Army must remain independents for at least 3 years before being invited to join a conference, in which case there must be a team to replace each of them in the Div I-A Independents if they both leave. The Div. 1-A Independents must have no less than 2 members at all times.
This section may be amended at any time AFTER the completion of the 1st season.
