Keep Jay-Z away from my 2k!
Posted on October 4, 2012 at 01:33 PM.
So we're 48 hours since 2k13 released and all I can say is what an incredible game....almost.

After a few days the overall newness has worn off and little things are just mystifying me about the direction this game went in 2013. Everyone knows Jay-Z is the "producer" or whatever that means and threw in a ton of his own music and a few others which is fine with me. What i do have a problem with is the absolute horror the presentation has become this year.

Did Jay-Z or whoever let him influence everything (just assuming this here, no clue if he did anything other than send music in) look at the other 2k's and say "This looks entirely too much like a TV broadcast" or "This looks way too much like what we see on TV every game we watch"? Now we have low-res player pics on intros with who knows what those swirly-tattoo style designs are growing across the screen.

What happened to legit realistic presentation to make it think you are watching a real game? ESPN/TNT licenses be damned, it looks like NBA 2k13 is using a sponsorship from the local Black Lotus Tattoo parlor. I know it's just a video game but it has lost a lot of legitimacy and professionalism by going for the "artistic" aesthetic this season.

Again, no clue if Jay-Z really had any input or just sent a check and let his name be put on the front but 2kSports has to remember, less is more when it comes to overlay design. Take the sequins and flashing X-mas lights off this game for 2k14 and you are scratching close to a perfect product.

Yeah, presentation and art, to put it lightly... suck.

I don't ever see a Jay-Z music video with a few game highlights before an NBA game on TV. All of the swirly and gold whatever look ridiculous. The art looks terrible. Colors are faded and don't look realistic, white accessories are gray again. To be completely honest, I feel a little underwhelmed by this years game. The gameplay is a good bit better, and I don't mean to "hate" on the game or whatever, but it truly does feel like 2K11.5 (because I honestly thought 2K12 was worse than 2K11 by a fairly big margin).

IMO, The presnetation and soundtrack is a mixed bag.
I wish there would have been more unfamiliar artists and unfamiliar songs like the past years.
The graphics and game intros have a TNT feel or an intro to an ABCESPN sunday afternoon game. The color choice is what is throwing people off. A different color scheme would have been less obtrusive. A differnt font maybe. The gold color is an old school throw back to CBS broadcasts. maybe that was the reason behind the color choice.

This is why I appreciate M13's soundtrack this year, they kept it all football sounds. I don't mind all hip hop but this is still basketball and I hope this doesn't become another stupid trend with celebrities putting name on sports games. Who's next P.Diddly?

I do like the underground stuff but mixed up as well. UFC 3 game was perfect for that. Or Jay Z should've just created freestyle basketball songs. Oh well. Will get the game after football is over. I rented it to get the newness itch out.

1st off I'm not racist, but you people most be white and don't know a thing about rap or JAYZ. Basketball is a black sport so having jayz do everything fits right in. Do you kno how many pll is going to buy it just because of jayz? Trust me 2k knew what they was doing.

Bashing jayz because of gold overlays and swirly tattoos. Come on get real. Black sport, black mogul, it goes together

@SLIMSHADY please dont say that basketball is a Black sport and tieing it to hiphop. Sounds like You're believing the perecptions and sterotypes. Your comments sound very stereotypical and can be miscontrued as being racist also. aighht brah!!!

"I liked 2ks soundtracks of the past, because it featured a variety of music that no one had really heard before, from underground tracks, to indi-type music, with a few mainstream artists mixed in. It helped keep the game fresh i thought."

"Favorite part about FIFA sound track is it is full of songs i have never heard before. Its fine if you want to have JayZ to boost sales, but to just have a soundtrack of songs from the early 2000s, and all having to be muted out bc of the profanity is not a good look."

+1 on both comments, needs better music mix in my humble opinion. I put 2k12 in just to make sure I was not being an jerk, presentation was cleaner, just better last year, 2k13 is sort of annoying in the presentation dept. this year, but it is fun.

For me it's just that all Jay Z's music is so dated, and honestly I never considered the guy a top tier rapper anyway, more just a "catchy hook", club song musician. That said, it isn't really the music that bothers me on this game, although the censoring on some tracks leaves you wondering why they'd even try to put them on. I just think the pre-game intros are a step back from last year, especially those occasions where they actually mix in clips from a Jay Z concert or music video. They also REALLY short-changed us this year on the post-game highlights, unless I'm missing something. Not only is the player of the game highlight much, much shorter than last year, but I can't seem to find the "signature highlights" for all the other players, which was always my favorite part of finishing a game. I've only found where you can select individual plays to watch from the FG log, if that's what you'd call it. Small bummer but the game is soooooooooo dope that I'll forgive them. It's finally fun to dribble the ball, nice job Mike Wang!

But why was it necessary to have his ugly mug all over the damn game.
