It was a beautiful night to open up the season, sunny and 70 degrees. The Marlins had their ace Josh Johnson on the mound and the Cardinals had Felix Hernandez. The Marlins didn't waste anytime getting on the scoreboard as Cameron Maybin singled to start the game and then Derek Jeter hit a single into left field. The left fielder would miss play the ball and it would get by him, which allowed Maybin to score from first. The Cardinals would respond in the 2nd as Francisco Lindor doubled into center field. Now in the 4th Shin Soo Choo of the Cardinals would hit a home run to center to give them a 1 run lead. The Marlins would respond in the bottom of the inning with a Paul Goldschmidt single to tie the game at 2. The Cardinals would to control in the 5th as Alberto Callaspo hit a 3 run homer to right field. Josh Johnson would be done after the inning. Josh Johnson was due up to begin the bottom of the 5th but he was pinch hit for by Mark DeRosa and he would hit a home run into the Marlins bullpen. Later in the inning Jesus Montero would hit a ball into the right center field game and he would score Derek Jeter. The next batter Logan Morrison would hit a single up the middle to set up runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Morrison would steal 2nd to set up Rickie Weeks to give the Marlins the lead. Weeks would strike out and then Jason Heyward would ground out to Ryan Howard to allow the Cardinals to escape with a 1 run lead. The Marlins would come back in the 6th strongly as Jim Thome would single through the 5.5 hole and Paul Goldschmidt would score from 3rd. Cameron Maybin would then double to center and score Gordon Beckham to give the Marlins a 6-5 lead. Neither team would come close to producing a run in the next two innings. In the ninth inning Mariano Rivera would come on and shut the door to give the Marlins their first win of the year.
