Arizona State, with new head coach Adam Thurley, were looking to start off the season on the right foot, by first travelling to scenic Hawaii to enjoy the islands before clobbering the Warriors in their first game of the season. While the first part of that may have happened, perhaps the scenery of the islands provided too much of a distraction for the players, as they came out flat, and wound up losing the game in overtime to the opposition.
"I think we might have bit off more than we could chew when scheduling our plan for the off time we would have on the islands," Thurley said in his post game interview, "maybe if we would've been more focused on the task [beating Hawaii] at hand instead off all the scenery that Hawaii has to offer, we might have came out a completely different team."
He continued on to say, "But give Hawaii credit, they were ready to play football after a long break. Coach Chow drew up the perfect game plan and his offense executed it to perfection. We are just going to have to get better."
The game came down to a 4th & 1 on Hawaii's 15 yard line. Senior RB Cameron Marshall knew he was going to be getting the football. "I was the reason our offense was having success. If I didn't move the ball well on first and second downs, Michael, our quarterback, wouldn't have time to throw it on third or make a good read on an option play and when you're a first year starting quarterback playing in a hostile environment, you need all the time and confidence in the world to execute the play." Execute is the opposite of what the Sun Devils did on the game deciding 4th & 1. The call was a draw play for Marshall out of a 4 WR set. If the defense would've bit on the dummy pass play, Marshall would have trotted right past the first down line and perhaps even into the end zone. The Warrior defense, however, wasn't taking the bait, as both MLB out of the Nickel set came running in to close the hole and tackled Marshall, ending the game and providing Hawaii with their first victory of the year, 34-27. Marshall finished with 120 yards on the ground on 27 attempts. He also found the end zone once.
Taylor Graham, quarterback for the Warriors, was named player of the game. He threw for 267 yards on 18 completed passes for 3 touchdowns.
Arizona State will travel back home to face the Fighting Illini of Illinois next Saturday. That game is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm (ET). TV coverage will be announced later in the week.
