Countless fans have wondered what baseball could be like today if the owners and players could have gotten along in the 1994 season. Before the 1994 strike, the Montreal Expos had the best record in the league, 74-40. They had superstars such as Moises Alou, Larry Walker, Cliff Floyd, Pedro Martinez, and John Wetteland. The players strike in August brought an end to this potential World Series team. The owner of the Expos lost so much money during the strike, he was ... Read More

This was written one day after Stan died.

Stan Musial Journal

I wish I could write this journal saying that I had a chance to meet Stan Musial. I hadn’t. I wish I could write this journal saying that I had seen Stan Musial with my own eyes. I hadn’t. Like so many others, I had only seen Stan Musial through the TV screen. I wish I could have grown up in an era where Stan Musial was the number one focus of St. Louis. Of course he has always been a main focus of St. ... Read More

It is very sad to think that black children are not interested in baseball for the most part. I have really wondered why this is and I’ve tried to search for where black kids lost their interest in baseball, but I have never found the exact spot. I know it had to have started around the mid to late 70s when Julius Erving came into the NBA and the likes of Hank Aaron and Willie Mays retired from baseball.

I started to notice the lack of black players in ... Read More

I think it should be noted that many, if not all the items in the Barry Halper Collection are disputed upon as to whether or not they are authentic or fake. I’m not going to go into details because I’d rather not research this topic too deeply just for a journal entry.

Everybody has been told not to believe something that sounds too good to be true. This saying most certainly applies to many of the items in the Halper Collection. Items in the collection ... Read More

In Chapter Twenty, the author discusses autobiographies written by baseball players. He shows the reader that most of these autobiographies are arranged in the sameway, first they describe the player’s career, then the player’s moment of religious clarity, and finally how the player related their new found beliefs with their careers.

At first, I was hoping that the author would include, Veeck-As in Wreck in his small list of autobiographies, but he didn’t. ... Read More

In regards to the chapter on baseball humor; I am surprised that the editor did not mention Buck O’Neil and his stories of Satchel Paige and Cool Papa Bell. Every baseball fan knows these stories about how fast Cool Papa Bell was, but they are still funny and worth repeating.

Back when the Negro Leagues were still around, Satchel Paige and Cool Papa Bell were roommates when the team was traveling. (The team was traveling all the time, but that’s not a part ... Read More

I am responding to the survey of backyard baseball diamonds that was included in Chapter Two of our book.

1. City and state were the backyard field was located?

2. Approximately what years the field was used?

3. What did you use for bases?

4. What were the ground rules?

5. Did you use “invisible” runners?

6. Briefly describe your memories of playing in this backyard diamond.

I have had three ... Read More

This was the first journal I wrote for the class. It is a reflection on the poem by Donald Hall, "Fathers Playing Catch With Sons."

Fathers Playing Catch with Sons Journal

I completely agree with Donald Hall that baseball is about fathers and sons. Baseball is pasted down generation after generation. Baseball is fathers teaching sons, fathers coaching sons, and if they are lucky enough, fathers playing with sons. That’s how my dad and uncle learned the game ... Read More

The next few entries of this blog will contain my journal entries I had to write for my baseball class over J-Term his past January. These journals were written as reflections to the material we read that night. As well as these journal entries, I will post stories from that class. They will range from how awesome I was in that class, to the SABR/BWAA guy that presented, to the ineptitude of some students.

As for the professor, she was awesome. She may have not known a ton of specific ... Read More
