When you watch an NFL telecast, are you watching it from the best vantage point? Since the dawn of the league; the NFL's television telecast has been broadcast from a horizontal perspective. Although we are conditioned to view this perspective as being the norm, we miss out on a ton of action. The battle in the trenches (offensive line vs defensive line) is non-existent, wide receivers jostling for position is unseen, and you have to imagine what your quarterback is seeing in real time, from play to play.
My proposal, the company's that broadcast NFL football should switch from a horizontal perspective to a vertical perspective (the same view point we utilize when playing Madden).
From a gaming perspective, video game football leaped exponentially when tecmo bowl (horizontal perspective) took a back seat to John Madden Football (vertical perspective). The change in view, engrossed you into the NFL experience. When playing Tecmo Bowl, an awesome game in its on right, when your receiver ran off screen, you had to use an icon to see if the receiver was open. The early builds of John Madden utilized passing windows to see all the action down field, allowing the gamer to see up to 3 receivers.
Imagine how this change will impact the sport. Currently Runningbacks and Quarterbacks receive the majority of praise and crticism. Not because their the most important pieces in football, it's because the current viewpoint promotes these two positions the most. With a vertical perspective every position will be scrutinized! You'll see if a lineman missed a block, your quarterback making decisions in the pocket, and a linebacker's inability to cover the flats. With the new age in Digital TV, maybe a network can test the vertical perspective out on one of its 3 channels (channel 4.1, 4.2, 4.3).
Football fans unite! I say we push this to the NFL and the networks. It's time for them to leave the stone age of NFL broadcasting.
