After several years away from the football field, former Alaska State head football coach Shannon Tietsworth has returned. With the sudden and unexpected dismantling of their football program at Alaska State, Coach Tietsworth was left with a huge hole in his life. He reluctantly stepped back into the retail life he grew into, but always longed for more pigskin time. Alaska State University made the difficult decision years ago to no longer field a football team. With the closure of the military base which brought in talent from across the country, plus the extreme costs of travel associated with running the program that saw significant drop in enrollment, the program was stopped amid a very successful period that saw multiple National Championships, jumping into Power 5 Pac-12 conference, and numerous conference title that followed. But the money just wasn't there.
Enter the much troubled and struggling Arkansas State Red Wolves. Coach stepped back into FBS football, and in 1 year guided an average ASU team to a 6-6 record, and a win in the Citrus Bowl over Florida International. Tietsworth established himself as a guy that can turn around a program quickly, and the Houston Cougars noticed.
