WELL GAME DAY IS FINALLY HERE AND THE PIRATES EMBARKED ON THEIR THIRD ROAD GAME IN A ROW ENDING THIS ROAD TRIP WITH #22 HOUSTON AND THEIR VAUNTED OFFENSE
EAST CAROLINA BEGAN THE GAME DRIVING RIGHT DOWN THE FIELD SCORING A TD, AND THAT WOULD BE ABOUT THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE GAME FOR THE PIRATES. HOUSTON DOMINATED THE REMAINDER OF THE FIRST HALF SCORING ON ALMOST EVERY DRIVE, TAKING A 24-7 LEAD INTO HALFTIME. (NOTE: THE SCORING FOR HOUSTON GOT OFF TO A QUESTIONABLE START AS THE FIRST TOUCHDOWN WAS CALLED A TOUCHDOWN ON THE FIELD AND AFTER BEING CHALLENGED BY COACH FALK, WAS UPHELD....THE NCAA LATER CONTACTED COACH FALK AND APOLOGIZED FOR THE CLEAR ERROR ON THE PART OF THE OFFICIALS.)
THE SECOND HALF WASN'T MUCH PRETTIER, EXCEPT WHEN HOUSTON WAS TRYING TO RUN OUT THE CLOCK. THE PASS DEFENSE OF THE PIRATES WAS ATROCIOUS AND COACH FALK TOLD REPORTERS AFTER THE GAME THAT HE WOULD BE EVALUATING THE ENTIRE DEPTH CHART FROM TOP TO BOTTOM TO GET THE PLAYERS WITH THE MOST HEART ON THE FIELD TO FINISH THIS AMERICAN CONFERENCE SCHEDULE DURING THE BYE WEEK.
END SCORE WAS 45-22, AND THE PIRATES WERE OUT GAINED IN TOTAL YARDS BY 200. THE HOUSTON STARTERS REMAINED ON THE FIELD AND WERE EVEN STILL THROWING THE BALL WITH LESS THAN A MINUTE LEFT AND THE GAME WELL IN HAND. COACH FALK WHEN ASKED AT THE END OF THE GAME ABOUT THIS, HE JUST SAID, "WE'LL REMEMBER" AND WALKED OFF THE FIELD.
THE HOUSTON DEFENSE ALTHOUGH NOT HIGHLY RANKED PLAYED OUTSTANDING AND GAVE THE PIRATES A GOAL TO STRIVE FOR GIVEN THEIR LOW RATING ALSO. "PLAY ABOVE YOUR RATING!" HAS BEEN STRESSED MANY TIMES BY COACH FALK III, DURING PRACTICES LEADING UP TO THIS ONE, HOWEVER, HOUSTON MUST HAVE HEARD THIS AND NOT THE PIRATES.
COMING OFF THE ROAD TRIP, EAST CAROLINA NOW HAS A BYE WEEK TO GET READY FOR A THREE GAME HOME STRETCH HIGHLIGHTED BY GAMES VS. NAVY AND THE TRIPLE OPTION, MEMPHIS, AND TEMPLE.
SIDE NOTE: ONE BRIGHT SPOT IN THIS GAME WAS THE PLAY OF CHANDON HICKERSON (STARTING RE) WHO REALLY NEVER QUIT AND GAVE THE DEFENSE SPARKS DURING THE GAME TO TRY AND ENERGIZE A RATHER LACKLUSTER PERFORMANCE. NOLAN JOHNSON (SAFETY) ALSO LEFT WITH AN INJURY TO HIS ABDOMINALS, AND IS PROBABLE TO PLAY IN THE GAME AGAINST NAVY.
